Description
The American Akita is a well-liked breed of massive dog that originated in Japan. It belongs to the working breed family which is notable for their guarding and rescuing skills. Akitas have been bred to become guardians and hunters. Their thick double coat is straight and harsh outside, and soft and shorter underneath. It comes in a wide variety of colors such as pinto, brindle, red, fawn, white, and silver.
Height and Weight
The male members of the Akita breed usually stand a height of 26 to 28 in at the withers, and weigh 75 to 120 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, normally have a height of 24 to 26 in, and a weight of 75 to 110 lbs.
Temperament
American Akitas, in general, are docile, loyal, and very affectionate pets. They are tolerant with children, especially when the breed has been socialized early. Nonetheless, the breed can be quite aloof and aggressive with strangers and other small animals. They are intelligent, and may easily get bored. They don’t bark a lot, though can be rather courageous and fearless. Akitas generally need firm but calm owners who can be confident and consistent with rules. In addition, the breed tends to be exceedingly sensitive and protective with their food that they might snap and bite almost anyone who disturbs.
Grooming
Akitas are not so easy to groom. Because Akitas are heavy shedders, owners have to brush them at least once every week. Their webbed foot hairs need regular trimming as well. To preserve the natural gleam of their coat, bathe and dry shampoo them only when necessary.
Health Concerns
Members of the Akita breed are commonly plagued by quite a few health problems. These include chronic heart diseases, gastric torsion, skin infections, and Progressive Retinal Atrophy. With proper care, nutrition, and exercise, the breed can live for as long as 10 to 12 years.
Best Environment
Akitas cannot tolerate hot climates. They are only suited to live in the cooler regions. They prefer sleeping indoors, though they can also make the chilly outdoors their home. Because the breed is very active, a spacious, securely fenced yard is necessary for them. As much as possible, owners have to keep Akitas from strangers and animals since they have the tendency to attack them. In terms of exercise, Akitas do not need them to be strenuous. A long walk or off-leash play in a safe place will be good enough for them.

I am 53 and Michiko is my first puppy ever and this has been the best decision ever, loves people, kids, other animals and she is 4 months and we are off the leash on some trails once she learns them. I totally recommend this dog especially if you are divorced and alone! LOL best companion ever and I got a clown evidentally because one lady at the day care where I occasionally take her stated she made her laugh all day. She does me as well. This dog is worth every penny you put into her!
