Description

The Bull Terrier is a well-liked breed of powerful, muscular dog that originated in England. It belongs to the Terrier breed family which is popular for their distinct personality and hunting skills. Bull Terriers have been bred to become sporting dogs. It has two popular varieties: the Standard and the Miniature. Their short coat is dense, flat, and quite rough. Its colors could be white or colored with markings in the head; and black, fawn, brindle, black-brindle, or tricolor.

Standard Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the Bull Terrier commonly stand a height of 20 to 24 in at the withers, and weigh 45 to 80 lbs.

Miniature Height and Weight

Miniature Bull Terriers, on the other hand, normally have a height of about 10 to 14 in at the withers, and have a weight of approximately 24 to 33 lbs.

Temperament

Bull Terrier2

Bull Terriers, in general, are courageous and fearless dogs. Though they were originally bred like fierce gladiators, the breed is way gentler now. They are fun-loving, clownish, and scrappy. The breed is also known to be polite, loyal, and obedient. They have the tendency to become intensely attached to their family owners. They crave for affection, and they generally make fine household pets. Bull Terriers thrive on firm and consistent leadership. Because they are very active dogs, they require a considerable amount of physical and mental exercise to stay well-behaved. The breed is usually fond of both adults and children. Handlers have to be strong-willed and be able to expose them to proper socialization so that they do not become too protective, willful, and possessive. In addition, the breed is not recommended to be with non-canine pets.

Grooming

Bull Terriers are very easy to groom. Although they tend to shed heavily, the breed only has minimal coat care requirements. In fact, occasional brushing will already suffice their grooming needs. Plucking the hair may also be done. Nonetheless, vacuum cleaning is very necessary.

Health Concerns

Members of the Bull Terrier breed are more likely to suffer from deafness, kidney trouble, eye problems, and heart diseases. They are also prone to skin allergies brought about by fleas and other insect bites. With proper care, nutrition, and exercise, Bull Terriers can live for as long as 11 to 14 years.

Best Environment

Access to a securely fenced yard is ideal for this playful terrier breed. Because they crave for human companionship, outdoor living is not advisable. They can thrive in apartment-living provided that the Bull Terrier gets to receive sufficient exercise. Short walks are usually inadequate. Owners are encouraged to give the pet at least a couple of long walks every day. To make them happier, several physical and mental challenges can also be integrated.
