California dog owner, Frank Lucido bought a bag of Purina’s Beneful dry dog food in December of 2014 and began feeding it exclusively to his dogs, a German Shepherd, an English Bulldog, and a Labrador Retriever.
Just about 2 weeks after beginning to feed Beneful, his German Shepherd became violently ill. The first symptoms that Frank and his wife noticed were that the Shepherd was losing hair and giving off an unusual odor. Two days later, a veterinarian examined their dog and found internal bleeding and a malfunctioning stomach and liver, symptoms consistent with poisoning.
One week later, on January 23, Lucido’s wife found their English Bulldog dead in the backyard. A necropsy revealed signs of internal bleeding and lesions on his liver, consistent with those same symptoms the Lucido’s German Shepherd suffered.
The family’s Lab has also since become ill and is being tested and treated for the same symptoms.
As a result of his dogs’ illnesses and more than 3,000 similar complaints of illness and death by other pet parents, Frank Lucido on February 5 filed a class action lawsuit against the Nestle Purina Pet Care Company.
The more than 3,000 complaints against Beneful “show consistent symptoms, including stomach and related internal bleeding, liver malfunction or failure, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, seizures, bloating, and kidney failure,” according to Frank Lucido v. Nesltle Purina Petcare Company, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
As reported by TopClassActions.com,
Lucido is looking to represent two classes — a nationwide class and a California subclass for dog owners “who purchased Beneful dog food in the past four years and who incurred any out of pocket costs due to illness, injury or death of their dog resulting from the ingestion of Beneful.”
The Beneful toxic dog food class action lawsuit is charging Nestle Purina with breach of implied warranty, breach of express warranty, negligence, negligent misrepresentation, strict products liability, violating California’s consumer legal remedies act, violating California’s Unfair Competition Law, and violating California’s False Advertising Law.
The plaintiff is represented by Jeffrey B. Cereghino of Ram, Olson, Cereghino & Kopcyzynski, by John Yanchunis of Morgan & Morgan Complex Litigation Group, by Karl Molineux of Merrill, Nomura & Molineux, and by Donna F. Solen of Kimbrell Kimbrell & Solen LLC.
To date, despite tens of thousands of complaints, both directly to Nestle Purina, published at consumer review and reporting websites, and filed with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, a recall or warning against feeding Beneful has not been issued. Purina maintains the position that their food is safe to feed.
Although the food is advertised as healthy and nutritious, third party testing found dangerous levels of mycotoxins, a toxic secondary metabolite produced by fungus (mold) that occurs in grains, especially corn, a primary ingredient in Beneful dog foods.
Other sources point to propylene glycol, an ingredient commonly found in anti-freeze and a known toxin to dogs and cats, which is also found in Beneful and other Purina brand foods.
We will provide updates to this case as it progresses.
In the meantime, any pet parents feeding Beneful brand pet foods may want to carefully consider that choice, keep a watchful eye for any unusual symptoms or illness, and research the complaints of other dog and cat owners in order to make an informed decision regarding their dog’s diet.

I feed Beneful healthy weight to my large 7 yr old Border Collie. Although my vet told me to stop, due to the link of the with illness, I continued to feed it to him. I just recently bought a new bag of the healthy weight and now he is sick. He is lethargic, constantly drinking water, I can't keep up with him, I even bought a water dispenser. I'm not sure if it was just a bad batch of food or not? I'm just worried at his quick down hill slide. The vet is running bloodwork and now we are just waiting for the toxicology report. It hurts me to see him this way. My Rascal boy is my family and I feel like this is my fault because I fed it to him.

I feed my dogs this food and have for a couple of years now without issue. Maybe it’s the factory which these particular foods come from that is the problem?

I’ve lost 2 dogs in less than 6 months, both to symptoms identical…… first was my Trouble baby, black mouth kerr (7 years old), he was fine the day before and then one morning I woke up went outside to call him to me, and he never came (he IS ALWAYS THE FIRST ONE AT THE DOOR FOR ME), I went and found him lying on the ground in his own urine, lethargic, weak, and he had the smell of parvo… the vet I went to did not do the tests to confirm, but after the x-ray it seems that their suspected tumor may have indeed been pancreatitis as well as kidney infection….. our beloved 6 year old rottie (bubba) died yesterday, he had pancreatitis and kidney infection… it was a repeat of Trouble, he was fine the day before and then suddenly the next morning he was knocking on Death’s door. We feed all of our dog’s Purina, and now I’m worried about my other dogs, it may or may not be purina, but at this point I don’t want to risk it anymore, I need to do more research and find a better food alternative for them, I can’t handle losing another fur baby like this, it’s heart breaking.

Please someone contact me. First my pit bull got sick and we thought it was something he ate. After extensive(and expensive)tests at the vet we found out it was his food. My chihuahua also has the same symptoms and that is another vet bill. I don’t know what to do. My pets are like my children and I want them healthy. This food is harmful and should not be sold. These people are causing animal deaths by the 1000’s and not being charged simply because they have the money to back them. I wish to join this suit in representation of my fur babies and all the rest that need it. Please help us make food safe again.

My beloved terrier mix BJ just had to be put down due to pancreatitis. I fed him this food to. I would like to get into this class action lawsuit due to the fact this is the only food I ever gave him. His death was sudden and this illness was so painful to him. I am shocked to hear that the FDA does not have regulations on dog food or treats. Whats up with that. They are family and they cant say whats wrong or if their food tastes funny or different. They cant speak so we need everyone to get involved. The vet said this can be related to diet. He was full of life but this took him way to soon. he was only three and a half. Why can’t we make the food in the USA why is everything coming from China. No regulations there I quess. If Purina will not come forward and admit they made the error, what message is that sending to all who lost a beloved friend, companion, and a special family member.
We have no children and when we lost BJ we lost a BFF, savior, and the best dog ever. Lets all stand up and make the USA, FDA do something about this. Stop making food that makes them sick.

I just recently purchased another big bag of Beneful for my gorgeous, huge, lab-lab-mix. Several years ago, he was on another food and suffered terrible skin and hair loss issues. He itched and licked and was miserable. We tried dozens of treatments and had repeated vet visits. He is 6 years old now, and has been eating Beneful for the last 2 years. Not only does he love it- he is a dainty eater, despite his 135 lbs- but his fur has come back and his energy and general health are excellent. His skin is perfect and he just shines. I thought that I had finally found his food. I mix this with Pedigree canned food for his evening meal. His snacks are Milk Bone. Now I do not know what to do…finally I have a beautiful healthy dog and am hearing these heart-rending stories.

Our family is a long term Beneful Healthy Weight dog kibble user. I really do not know when I started but it is at least 13 years ago. Our dogs including labs and a beagle mix have lived long lives. The ones that have passed away were at a age where I did not even question why. Currently we are feeding Beneful Healthy Weight to a black lab we have had since she was a puppy (12 years) and a rescue yellow lab we have had for 4 years and we were told when we adopted her she was 9.5 years old…so she would be 13+ years. My dogs have had no other kibble and milkbone dog treats. Honestly I have not any problems. My heart goes out to the dog owners whom lost their dogs to something other than old age.

Our beautiful Beagle, Maggie May has been suffering a host of medical issues
related to Purina Beneful dog food brand. I trusted Purina products to be of a
better quality due to their long business history. Now, my beloved pet can hardly eat.
Throws up after eating, gradually losing her mobility. She has to be put to bed and helped outside to take care of business. Before Beneful, she was vital, playful, and had no physical problems. She is mid-way through her life and should have many more years of good health. She has had her blood tested, urine tested and many other tests. The only thing different is the brand(Beneful) dog food. She is a member of our family and it breaks my heart to see her fail daily. Beneful has an obligation to be responsible for the failure of internal organs and death of many pets. I will join the class action suit and expect Beneful to make restitution and medical costs and the heartbreak of watching your pet suffer. Purina needs to pay for both physical and emotional distress for their care-less-ness. It won’t bring our pet back, but since money is their only objective and not the health of animals, change your formula(sans anti-freeze and by-products which are God only knows what and dig very deeply in their pockets to show they are remorseful and intend to rectify this atrocity. Eagerly awaiting a response from this company. Silence only confirms this horror is true. Changed my dogs food immediately after hearing and from what I’ve heard and read, many others are as well. You need to show your willingness or you may find Beneful on your dinner plate. Make it right, it will go a long way to assuage bad publicity and fear of your product. Show you care.

It’s interesting that everyone is now getting on the band wagon just because your dog was ill, did you ever consider that dogs in particular pick up many things off the ground or even in your own home that can make them ill. My 2.5yr old Boxer has been on Beneful since she was a puppy and she is happy, healthy. You all go start changing your dog foods and no wonder your dog is sick, it’s the worst thing for them. Every dog food out there has something that we are not suppose to give our dogs, did you consider that. I am not slamming anyone but remember dogs like kids come down with many things at times and you can’t just go blaming there food. Our dogs/puppies are also children and depend on us, did you consider what hot dogs and hamburgers could do to your kids when they were kids? Sorry but no dog food out there is perfect, I don’t care what anyone says and like us everything in moderation and watch your dogs when you go for a walk and what they try an pick up off the ground, do you always catch them …no. Plants in your house also make animals very ill, the lick the wrong part or the part you just cut and they are getting sick. It does not take much to make a dog very toxic and feeding your dogs human food, do you know what can kill them, have you really researched it? Start feeding your dog 1tsp everyday coconut oil every day and if there pads are rough rub some on them and rub it in. Coconut oil can help clean out your dogs digestive system believe it or not and help keep there coat beautiful and healthy. Stop blaming the dog food companies for everything. When you have more than enough dogs on Beneful that are happy and healthy. Remember just like us everything in moderation. From one Dog lover to another

I am in South Africa. We don’t get Beneful but we do get Purina dog food like also etc. 2 years ago I changed my choc labbie to Purina. He started to get diaharia, and started bleeding. Within one week he died. I insisted on an autopsy and they said he had an enlarged liver. I now wonder whether the food caused it.

make informed choices. READ the ingredients: feed them nothing that contains corn, wheat, soy, or by-products of any kind. INVESTIGATE potential foods thoroughly; you have a computer, surely you know how to google something? be thorough in your research, but not reactionary. SUBSCRIBE to dogfoodadvisor.com’s recall alert, and see how your food rates on their reviews. keep doing the best you can for your dog. We fed the healthy weight beneful to our dog Marley for a year. She stopped eating, lost half her body weight, and ended up diagnosed with diabetes. We had her for one more year before her passing. This was 3 years ago. Our free, wonderful dog turned into a pedigree in 17 days. We spent thousands to save her. I am saddened by this. Just thinking she could still be here if I chose to feed her something else sickens me. We only had her 9 years. Will definitely do my research if we ever get another dog. Still can’t bring ourselves to do that just yet.

My mother fed her two dogs Beneful for years. Last year when she was on vacation I was taking care of her dogs and everyday I noticed large piles of vomit in their kennels, they were lethargic, vomiting and bloated. I googled Purina Beneful and learned that so many other dog owners were going through the same thing. I immediately notified Purina and returned the open bag to Walmart. I purchased a better food for them and after one day the vomiting, bloating and other symptoms went away. Now they have so much energy, have slimmed down and look healthy. I truly believe that these dogs would have died if I continued to feed them Beneful. I just hope other dog owners quit feeding this poison to their pets before it’s too late.

My mom is elderly and had a beautiful, high bloodlined, registered German Shepherd that died shortly (approx. 3 mths) after she started to feed him Purina Beneful. He died suddenly, within 4 hrs. The vets stated it to be Gastric Torsion, in short terms, Bloat. She was not only devastated, but also confused as to his apparent good health up to that point. She used to raise and show German shepherds back in the 60’s and has always had a shepherd since then, so she certainly knows how to treat these dogs. Timber died about 4 yrs ago, but she is still heart broken about it. Now that this has come up, I would also like to know how one can at least contact somebody about this.

PLEASE visit a pet food store, preferably one that supports rescues (not a puppy selling store) Have them go over their various brands and choose the one that’s best for your pet’s needs. As soon as a food makes it to the grocery stores, it’s usually not good… Like Iams used to be high quality and now isn’t. Grocery stores carry very few healthy foods, like Paul Newmans treats. Try Nutro, I use that for all my 4 dogs of different ages, breeds, sizes. 🙂

I am feeding 5 puppies on Purina puppy food. One of the puppies were having severe diarrhea. I am changing just in case, but who Can you Trust these days. I started giving them ground boiled chicken with and/or ground green beans, peas, mostly any kind of vegtable that is Not on a Do Not Feed List, along with sweet potato, what I can find and is on sale or we grow. It is more expensive this way, but…What are the alternatives at this point? Reputable companies are being tarnished and who do we believe…Any dog food company who puts that corn meal stuff in should be ashamed of themselves…I have two larger and older dogs that broke out into allergies that you wouldn’t believe and the costs of veterinarians and all the tests, then meds is outstanding…Good luck to all and hope your fur babies are doing well…

I have never fed my dogs Beneful……I feed them Hill’s Presription food right now as my dog is on a diet for a short while. It might cost a bit more as I buy it at my Vets, but I know it’s good food.
Julietta
Feb 24, 2015 at 2:47 pm
Please look at the ingredients of Hill’s dog food. Unfortunately, just because it’s prescribed by a vet doesn’t mean it’s the best. Most vets get kick backs (money) for recommending certain dog food. If you look at the first few ingredients in Hills….it’s the same as Beneful. The first 5 ingredients in Hill’s prescription dog food-Lamb Meal, Brewers Rice, Brown Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Whole Grain Wheat.
Any dog food that has rice and/or corn should NOT have it as one of the first few ingredients (if at all). Rice and corn are just filler ingredients…cheap for the company but provides NO nutrition to your pet.
I’m not saying Hill’s is bad…but it’s not good either. It’s a shame that we should be able to trust our doctors and vets but unfortunately some of them care more about the kick backs they are receiving for prescribing you a certain medication or prescribing your dog a certain food. Look into kick backs for doctors and vets…you’ll be amazed at the amount of money they receive for prescribing a certain product to you.
Sarah
Feb 25, 2015 at 9:42 pm
Considering I work for a vet, there are no “kickbacks” for selling a certain food. Just lunches every once in a while. And for you to say any actual food product has NO nutritional value is just plain STUPID!!! Corn has protein, fiber, calories, sugar…… your officially an idiot. There are companies that actually grade dog food, I would check out their websites.
Rebecca McMannis
Feb 26, 2015 at 1:08 pm
corn most certainly is bad for a large chested dog. It creates lots of gas and excessive gas does indeed resort to “Gastric Torshion” (bloat), so please, do not tell me that corn will not hurt your dog. That is a STUPID remark!

Unfortunately the problem is that there are NO regulations for dog food. They can claim whatever they want to claim is in the food without there being any truth to it and they can put whatever they want in the food and don’t have to tell you. It’s scary that our pets’ food is not regulated.

I give my boys Nutro Max or Natural Choice food and sometimes Pedigree wet food that comes in a pouch, but I do also give them treats and they like the hugs and beggin strips and the dental treats from beneful so is there a problem with the treats or just the hard food?

Purina sells the Wagon Train brand of treats.. almost exclusively they were made in China. The wet Beneful tubs are supposed to be nearly as bad as the dry. I rarely fed my dog the dry, but the wet and treats, all the time. He started having significant problems, esp. kidney and liver. I was able to return the treats for a full refund, but didn’t know about the food at that time. I lost him last summer.

I’m so very sorry for the loss of their beloved dog and the illness they are dealing with.
Anyone who would feed this food needs to learn about nutrition. Just read the label and see all the fillers and ingredients dogs don’t need. It is lacking the things they do need. Real MEAT should be the first ingredient. Dogs don’t need corn, wheat, beet pulp. Just look at the ingredients. The first thing is corn (REALLY???), then by-product meal, more corn gluten, flour, etc. They don’t need fruits or vegetables either. They need MEAT and bones as the first ingredient.
Please, always read the label before buying foods for your pets.

OMG Purina has been my go to brand forever, my last two litters died due to seizures, diaherra, vomiting… Etc. They were all tested for parvo which came back negative. I was able to nurse two back to health then one got sick again and died. I made sure I bought those poor puppies the beneful thinking it was a good choice, this could of been the very cause of why they died. Only one ended up surviving and this would explain why only the little puppies got sick and not my other ones! I feel terrible knowing that I was feeding them poision but at the same time now I feel like this is the answer we were looking for as to what happened!

I have a 5 year old male Shitzu.. and he is always c a Happy dog when it comes to feeding time. I feed him the Healthy Weight beneful dog food. Well the past 4 months we been noticing his thin( always had a beautiful coat) hair and now he is showing blood in his urine some. He looks like a dog that I picked up off the road and will not talk about the odor he has. Poor thing I bath him once a week so he will smell better. I have as off tonight switched his food to pedigree. I am praying he will be back to his self in a month or two with his pretty coat.

I just put down My 10 year old York ie before Christmas due to couldn’t hardly walk and breathing funny. Come to find out s h en was in Congestive heart failure. I am beginning to wonder if beneful was the cause of what was wrong with her. I miss her everyday but t h en vet said s b en wo u I don’t had made it through the night. I would never let my dog suffer.

we’ve been feeding Beneful to our black lab for 8 yrs now since we got him (originally other Beneful options before healthy weight the last 4-5 years). What is a better choice in the same price range?

I know price is always a consideration for everyone on a budget. It was for me. But I was forced off this food and had to get a scrip food for my Rottie mix. He ate this for 9 years before it was discovered he had calcium oxalate stones in his bladder, which can only be surgically removed, and a growth on his spleen that was a ticking time bomb. Also a cyst on his kidney. Food for pets that is of any quality is not inexpensive. I ended up paying, on line, about $62 every 6 weeks to feed him. Still cheaper than surgery and worth it to keep him around! Research online for grain free foods and check the fat content as fatty ones can end up causing pancreatitis, (I actually left his vet over this oversight) even the scrip food did that to my Harold after a couple years. Switched to the low fat version and he was fine and lived to ripe old 14.

Taste of the Wild is what I feed my two American Pit Bull Terriers. My vet is pleased with the results but did not recommend it. I did the research and I am happy with my choice. I would recommend it for your fur babies as well.

weird i started to feed my dogs Beneful as well and they both dropped dead with five months of each other. my little rottie started to show signs of rat poison poisoning but that was totally impossible. she had seizures and finally a heart attack right here in my living room. if beneful is the cause the directors of purina should rot in Hell.

How does one join this class action lawsuit? My dog developed pancreatitis, diabetes, hair loss, weight loss, etc. I would like to be part of this lawsuit.

I started feeding this to my young dog about 8 years ago because it looked delilcious. She became ill–bloody diarrhea and losing weight. The vet did numerous tests and we finally agreed to change diet to non grain suspecting food allergies. The change of diet made her well. I always suspected Benefiber!

This is absolutely horrible. I started feeding my terrier this food because she stopped wanting to eat the other grocery store brand about three months before she passed away.
She had been to the vet and they checked her and said that she was in good health although she was going blind just months before she passed away. She was 11. In late July of 2014 while out for a swim I noticed she had patches of thinning hair on some parts of her body, I thought the groomer had done a poor job. August 28th 2014, I woke up to find her laying by my bed unable to get up. She could only tap her tail. We took her to the vet and she was put down. The vet said that she was barely holding on. We assumed she had cancer that we didn’t know about.
Reading this article I may have unknowingly poisoned her. There is no way to know for sure but just makes me so sad to think it may have been.

I fed my dog Rocky this food for many years. Although his symptom was not as severe in a short amount of time it makes me wonder if it could have caused his Kidney Disease upon which he died from.

People in my group know that Purina’s BENEFUL is still killing and sickening dogs. Just like it did with theirs. Likewise Purina Cat food.
Nestle don’t care .. they put moldy GMO hog corn based kibble, laced with an assortment of things such as fertiliser and hydrolysed animal remnants with GMO Soy byproducts laced with a generous residue of cancer-causing, organ-destroying and endocrine-disrupting Glyphosate (Round-Up) with synthetic colors and flavourings, spray it with “Animal Fat” from rendering plants – just don’t ask WHICH animal.. add a few cheap and nasty mineral sulfates and oxides with low absorption and bio-availability, and call it Dog Food.
It is also 1% Antifreeze aka Propylene Glycol. THis antifreeze has 1/3 of the toxicity of the stuff that most people put in their cars but that is not safe enough in MY books. The antifreeze makes it sweet (along with the GMO sugar) and chewy (this crap has a whopping 18% water content!
Definitely change the food! We have a lot of suggestions in the files in our group so please join us!

I agree that Beneful is a terrible food, but I feel the need to clear something up: Propylene glycol is NOT THE SAME THING as ETHYLENE glycol, which is traditional anti-freeze.
Propylene glycol is in thousands of things, your medications, foods, gels, etc. It’s completely harmless unless you were to ingest an extremely large quantity in one sitting. It is also actively used in veterinary medicine for liquid suspensions of medications as well as large animal medicine.

i know plenty of people who have been feeding Beneful and have had no issues. Yet, two of my dogs have been on very expensive dog food and both died with cancer.

I’ve been feeding both my dogs Beneful Healthy Delight for the last 3 years. My lab has thrown up recently twice should I be concerned that it could be the food??? What is going on?

Yes, you should be concerned and quit using it immediately. There are plenty of other low cost foods that are much better. If your dog continues to be sick, you need to get them to a vet as there are many causes. Either way, I strongly suggest a change in food.

Yes! After hearing this on the news I immedially ran to the store to return it. Walmart gave me a full cash refund. I went to Petsmart and bought a bag of Nutro Max lamb and rice. It’s about 10$ more a bag. But so worth it. I’m so sicken that I have been giving my baby poison! It saddens me to read everyone stories online about this. Makes me sick! These dog food company’s should have more enforced regulations! I have a 5 year old Golden Retriever.

Be careful…Nutro made my dogs sick…bloody stool, runny stool, gel looking stool, weight loss, lethargic. Switched them to Carna4 and Natures Logic.
