Description

The Plott Hound, also simply referred to as Plott, is a breed of medium-sized, muscular dog that originated in the United States. It belongs to the hound breed family which is admired for their incomparable hunting skills emphasized by their excellent scenting ability, outstanding speed, and or great stamina. Plotts have been bred to hunt wild animals such as bear and boar. Their fine, glossy coat is smooth in texture, and usually comes in solid black, various shades of brindle, brindle coupled with a black saddle, as well as black enhanced with a brindle trim. Some members of the line have a few white markings around the chest and feet.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the Plott Hound breed normally stand a height of 20 to 24 in at the withers, and weigh between 45 to 55 lbs.

Temperament

Plott Hounds, in general, are kind, personable dogs that make excellent family companions. The breed tends to drool and slobber. They need firm yet gentle owner who can display confident and consistent leadership over them. A great deal of exercise, however, has to be given to keep the breed happy.

Grooming

Plott Hounds are easy to groom. Their short, sleek coat only needs to be brushed twice a week. Bathing may also be done on an occasional basis. The breed is an average shedder.

Health Concerns

Plott Hounds are generally a hardy breed. In fact, they have an average life span of 12 to 14 years. Nonetheless, they are susceptible to a few health issues such as bloat or gastric torsion.

Best Environment

Plotts are not suitable for apartment-living. They need a great deal of exercise, and they love to stay outdoors when possible. They like to be near their family owners, and can adapt to rural-living. Taking them out for long, brisk walks every day would make these scent-hounds happy.
