Puppies Killed at Pit Bull Awareness/Adoption Event

Two pit bulls were killed and another three are recovering after someone apparently poisoned the young puppies during an awareness and adoption event in central Pennsylvania this weekend.

WeAreCentralPA.com reported that during an event held by A Darrah Bull Bully Rescue, someone allegedly put poison in the water dish that 5 tiny pit bull puppies were drinking from. The event was intended to raise awareness of the breed, to educate the public about these dogs, and to find homes for the pups that A Darrah Bull Bully rescues.

Renae Metz, one of the founders of A Darrah Bull Bully Rescue, told reporters, “The puppies evidently were an easy target. We aren’t going to turn people down when they offer to put water in their pen, we never imagined that someone would be this malicious.”

Because of the actions of one hateful, malicious person, the pit bull rescue organization will no longer bring puppies to their events.

“We want to press on and save as many dogs as we can,” Metz said. “This just turned us on to the fact that so many people are hateful and we just need to keep spreading the word that these are not bad dogs at all.”

The organization is offering a $1000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the heinous act that left 2 puppies dead and 3 others in need of emergency medical care.

If you have information, or would like to contribute to their cause in the form of donations, visit A Darrah Bull Bully Rescue at http://adarrahbullbullyrescue.webs.com/

There is no scientific proof that pit bulls are dangerous. When they do bite they do a lot of damage but people are breeding and conditioning for aggression so they can claim big dicks and make $.People are always the problem.Labs bite more than pits each year. Question re the safety of pit bulls: I visited a few days with someone who had a “harmless” pit bull, half grown. When I would go outside to use my cell phone, the lonely dog would try to play with me, by jumping on me and biting at my ankles. If I tried to walk away, he would only become more rowdy, jumping and biting more — and it hurt! If I ran away, this behavior would escalate even more. Yelling at him didn’t help. (They told me to yell at him when he was rowdy.)

I ended up jumping on the roof of the nearest car or sitting in the car (on a hot day) just to talk on my phone! He could be sneaky too — waiting until I am a distance from the house before he would come after me.

I agree this dog would possibly be better if they gave him attention, so he wasn’t so lonely. They keep him on a chain or in the house all day, and want to allow him a chance to exercise —- hence him catching me when I would talk on my phone (no signal in the house).

Other dogs do not threaten me like that. Pit bulls IN PARTICULAR threaten me like that. I was at risk with that pit bull!! (I am 5/3″; 105 lbs). A small child would be in even more danger. He could injure me when he is being playful. Also I sensed he could easily go from ‘playing’ to intentional aggression very easily.

These factors are not true in many other breeds (maybe a few other breeds they are true in). This constitutes a DANGEROUS DOG. Am I mistaken????

Other breeds don’t endanger me just because I am caught outside alone without their owner, when they also happen to be in the same area.

Before this experience I had never had an attitude against pit bulls. Somebody help me out, here.

I live on a farm in a rural country town in the middle of ‘lost and found’ so to speak. Having been raised on a farm, I have been and still am exposed to a variety of situations regarding animal life. My parents have a male jack russell farm dog and also various ages of toy poodles. I personally have a male blue heeler and a male border collie. The reason i’m highlighting these facts is because every breed typically has a standard personality that is typical for them. However, i’ve seen some toy poodles that are your typical friendly lap cuddler people lover and some that are aggressive knee nibblers. The ‘standard’ blue heeler is usually a reserved cautious dog- more of a one owner or one family type dog. However my blue heeler has never met a stranger, and would rather be out treeing squirrels and coons than herding our sheep. My border collie also doesn’t fit the ‘typical’ border collie mold. He’s very laid back, prefers to fall asleep chewing on a bone or bark at fish in the creek. We have had numerous dogs and puppies wander up to our houses that people have neglected on the dirt road- some have been great dane mixes, lab mixes, pit bulls and really all kinds of dogs. Unfortunately, if these dogs can’t be placed, many wind up killed by being runover or even at the hand of a rancher protecting his cattle investment if he finds them chasing his cows.
I’ll admit that i have never owned a pure bred pit bull, although i have at various times owned some that were cross breeds. My point to this little story is that i feel like people want to point the blame at one specific breed and call it dangerous. And maybe there are breeds that are MORE prone to being violent than others. I do think that just as there are good people in the world and there are bad people in the world, there are animals that have a genetic makeup that leans them one way or the other. You observe a litter of puppies and some at a very young age will bark and growl a lot while others are quite timid. This can be observed only weeks after birth. I’m not trying to downplay the role that past experiences play on a dog (or human for that matter). I think that a dog or human that was abused should be given a chance to recover- and some truly do blossom and rise above their traumatic experience. Unfortunately others can’t ever seem to and it may effect them at different times or during different situations. But to poison an animal, helpless puppies in this instance, that is wrong. This was inhumane and cruel. Maybe there should be permits or licenses to acquire with the breeds deemed ‘more prone to violence’ but where is the line drawn for that? I have barbadoes sheep that absolutely enjoy ramming my horses and my ‘supposed’ cow dogs, but does that make them violent and require a permit to own them? This needs to be looked at from a broader spectrum and a more open mind.

I have had over my lifetime. A terrior poodle mix that no one could get close to. The dog took a chunk out of my leg when my brother and I were having a dissagreement. When I was 4 or 5 yrs old, I had a heinz 57 that chewed my upper lip up. We had two black labs when I was kid. They never bit me. They pulled me around the block on my skateboard. As an adult, I had one St Bernard who was a loving dog. An Irish setter that was so sweet. A German sheppard that wasnt territorial until we moved to town, and had a fenced in back yard. If you were family the dog wouldnt let you in the back yard. The shepard was protective of my son who was a toddler. We have had three more labs since then. One white, one black, and one chocolate lab. The white and black labs I never had any problems with. The chocolate lab would bite my bottom when my husband or kids starterd yelling at me. Other wise the chocolate lab wouldnt bite. I presently have hienz 57, Probably terrier, and chiulala mixed. He doesnt like people in uniform, or dark complexted people. This dog was rescued by a friend of my husbands. They gave the dog to us. I suppose at one time he was abandoned, and abused. He is sweet to me, but he has bitten other family members. He doesnt want me to leave the house. he is attached to me. Then I have full blood chiulala. That dog barks all the time when someone comes thru the door. She gets all the dogs started barking. She hasnt bit anyone yet. She sneaks up on the bed to sleep after we fall asleep. Then my son who lives with us brought a pit bull puppy home 7-8 months ago. She is a big dog now. She hasnt bitten anyone. My heinze 57 rules the house. He is in charge. The other dogs know not to bother him. He bosses the pitt bull. The mother and a sister of my sons pitt bull. I see once in while they are really gentle. The pitt bull doesnt bother my cats, or my chickens. My heinz 57 chases my boy cat all the time, but doesnt bother the two girl cats. Just like in all races of people, in all breeds of dogs you have your good and bad. Most bad behavior is learned, as well as good behavior is learned. Bad behavior can be taught, as well as good behavior can be taught. Sometimes good familys may have that one kid that turns bad maybe born that way. Bad familys may have that one kid that turns out good. It is the same with dogs and litters of puppy. It depends on genetics, learned behavior, training, and discipline. Out of the three dogs that live in my house. The pit bull seems to be the best one. She is so sweet. She can do a whole bunch of tricks. Now if I can figure out a way to keep all the dogs out of the trash. I would be a happy camper.

Allowing your dogs to repeatedly bite your or family members, or to act aggressive to others is totally irresponsible dog ownership and you are exactly the type of people who should NOT own the type of dog that could potentially cause serious damage to someone if they did bite. I hope that you start to take responsibility for your animals and actually learn the proper way to raise and train them. The use of a trainer to do temperament tests on your animals should be the first step in gaining control of a situation that obviously have been dangerous for some time.

People who care about something other than themselves and respect that we are not the best thing here, people who love animals or at least respect their right to life too, these are the people who should populate our planet.
I recently adopted/rescued a pitty mix. She is the most happy animal. She loves everyone and everything, even the kitty she chases down the hall who refuses to chase her back (this has her very confused. Lol!) She didn’t even know what a backyard was; now she owns it!

It’s sad when people will use any excuse in the book to argue over which breed is good, bad or otherwise. Get educated on the facts first. Statistics in the book titled Fatal Dog Attacks shows statistics stating that surprisingly more family friendly dogs such as labs and golden retrievers are now outnumbering the pitbulls in attacks. Regardless of breed, attacks do happen , but we can’t blame the breed itself. That would be like blaming and decriminating against a certain race of people as a whole based on a small group of individuals who do something wrong. PEople think that pitbulls are mean and such, but are they looking and judging the other end of the leash? Everything involving the dogs starts w a human including his training and temperament development. The reason why pitbulls got the bad rep in the first place was because people thought it was a good idea to fight them against each other and other animals. If dogs were left on their own and not made to fight they would very likely establish a pack mentality and live together in peace. Humans destroyed that peace with ignorance and a greed for the money.

  27. statistics from the national agency have shown that while pit bulls attack less often than other breeds, for example Collies or Chihuahuas.

the difference comes in the outcomes of the attacks. When dogs commonly labeled as “pit bulls”, (e.g. those derived from the Staffordshire Terrier and its closely related breeds), are involved in attacks on humans, the outcome is fatal to the human much more often than almost any other breed.

Unfortunately the statistics cannot reveal if the fatality of the attacks are so high because of the dogs training or because of the dogs natural instincts.

when observing dog attacks on various kinds of animals, the most effective technique to kill the animal being attacked is when the dog captures the victim animal within the first few moves of the attack and does not release. You will often see the attack focused on the neck of the victim animal. Death can come from asphyxiation or damage to the spine.

Observing attacks between similar sized dogs, the typical approach is to bite and release. However videotapes of Pitbull Attacks on other animals do not match this general pattern. Observing a few videos of Pitbull attacks is not a statistically valid research effort. However the few I have observed show the Pitbull does not release. Instead it maintains a capture bite on the victim animal and repeatedly re-engages that capture bite.

Again, there’s no way to tell if this attack pattern is trained in or instinctive.

Some effort should be made to determine if this type of attack pattern only happens when the dog has been trained to attack in this fashion. If it turns out that this is an instinctive characteristic of the breed, then the United kingdoms approach to this problem is the correct one. In the UK, they have decided to eliminate the breed by attrition. Attrition means that the dogs are allowed to live out their natural lifespans, but they are not allowed to be bred. In order to own a dog of the breed, it must be sterilized.

If it turns out that this characteristic only exists in dogs that have been trained to attack in this fashion, then trying to eliminate the breed will have no effect whatsoever. The types of people who train a dog to attack in this fashion will simply select another breed and train them in the same way.

Some of you have mentioned dachshunds and Jack Russells as being aggressive small dogs. Yeah. Terriers. Any dog bred to dig down into a den and kill the animal on it’s own turf is going to be VERY aggressive. And in the case of the dachshund, the prey was a badger, which is a pretty fierce animal in it’s own right. The thing is, most terriers are small, and that SOMEWHAT limits the damage they can do. But SOMEONE wanted the aggressive nature of a terrier AND the jaws of a bulldog, and that was the origin of the pit bull. And IMO, that was a BIG mistake.
I drove a delivery truck, and was attacked by one. He only bit once, but the big canine teeth left a deep wound that got infected and stayed infected a month and a half. I had a degree of PTSD from it. I’m not feeling it now, but I’ve had moods where I hate pit bulls with a purple passion. And then, my brother in law was working security in a parking lot, and some jerk with THREE pit bulls in the car left his passenger door open, and two came out after my bro-in-law. One grabbed his leg and shook it, breaking an artery, and he almost bled to death.

Dogs are carnivores, and any dog as large as a wolf has the potential to do with their teeth what a wolf can do. A Malinois can break bones with one bite. But pit bulls have even MORE powerful jaws. They may not bite as often as small dogs, but when it does bite, it’s more like a mountain lion than a dog.
You’re going to get deeper wounds, even in the case of biting once and clamping.

AND…. I’ve been lunged at on a leash by about four or five pit bulls… one, across FOUR lanes of traffic! I’ve had pit bulls charge up to me at full speed, unleashed… this all since the attack. I’ve had a bigger dog that looked somewhat like a pit bull growl at me, and come after me slowly, and a rottweiler growl at me when I was in his owner’s space, but AT LEAST I got warning growls. I read on a dog site that pit bulls were bred to ATTACK WITHOUT WARNING as it gave them an advantage in the fight.
And the terrier personality means that the aggression isn’t based on territory like it is with other dogs.
I’ve never had as many of any other breed behave aggressively toward me, and in all the lunging/charging cases, I was minding my own business.
I don’t advocate poisoning puppies, but think… that could easily have been done by someone who had a child killed or maimed by a pit bull.
I myself had a neighbor who had a pit bull, and I didn’t like it at all, needless to say, but when the dog got tangled in it’s chain to the point of choking, I overcame my fear and untangled it.

Those of you who like pit bulls so much:
ask delivery people what they think of them.
    Or emergency room staff.
    Or lawyers.
    Or insurance people.

Also, the bad owner thing. Part of the reason there SHOULD be a license for a pit bull is to keep them OUT of the hands of irresponsible owners. And I’ve met a few of those, believe me.
Over a couple of hundred years, bulldogs HAVE lost their aggressiveness… but the way people still have pit bull fights, and many WANT the aggressiveness, the likelihood of the aggressiveness being bred out doesn’t seem very good.

One problem is the “good’ pit bull owners who love them so much that they can’t have JUST ONE. It’s a fact that as soon as you have multiple dogs, the danger goes up drastically… the pack instinct gets going, and they start acting like wolves, and they forget any training you’ve done on them. And with pit bulls, you REALLY DON’T WANT THEM ACTING LIKE WOLVES!!! Many of the sad stories in the papers involve multiple pit bulls.
“Love is blind” they say, and part of the problem is that love for dogs and pit bulls can cause a form of denial that there is even a problem.

    Another idea: Google the words:
    pit bull attack
    rottweiler attack
and so on for any other breed.
You’ll find a much higher proportion of really nasty maimings and deadly attacks from pit bulls, many of them news stories.
The rottweiler hits were pretty tame compared to the pit bull pages.
And they are statistically #2 after the pit bull in deaths and maimings… but the pit bulls have TWICE as many…. that’s a BIG difference.
And, many of those killed or injured are:
    1. the owners
    2. the owners’ family members
    3. the friends of the owners

We took her in, made the humane decision to terminate the pregnancy (not knowing the father of the puppies, his temperament, statistics of puppies finding homes, overpopulation of pets, etc), had her spayed, chipped, and fully vetted. After fearing a possible adopter might use her for fighting, we decided to keep her as a family pet. I can tell you honestly, she less likely to bite someone than our hound mix and is more doscile than my 8lb Italian Greyhound. That guy will bite your face, hands, our cats, etc (he’s very old and yes, senility has kicked in), but he’s unable to do any real damage. Our pit has also reared two tiny kittens she claimed as “hers” and she cuddles them at night. She’s the epitome of a good, loving, faithful companion of a dog.

Having said all of that, I would NEVER leave any of our pets unsupervised with a child or a stranger. Period! EVER! We don’t have any kids, nor will we, but there would just be too many “what ifs” that could come into play with any animal. Even our kittens and pet chickens/rooster could, and probably would, injure a child if not supervised. Part of being a responsible pet owner is knowing your animal’s breaking point, dislikes, temperament, and overall general disposition. Bring common sense into the situation and leave breed specific stereotypes out.

First off, I believe that there should be a two 30lbs or over dog limit per adult in one household with a maximum of six per household. I believe that one human being is not sufficiently able to take care of more than that alone without any help. Second, I believe that owners of any dog beyond 30 pounds should be required by law to get their dogs behavior and health THOROUGHLY tested twice a year, should be briefed on they’re dog breeds typical behavior and health, and they should also be required to obtain special ownership permit and insurance. Every dog over 30 pounds, or breeds known to reach over that, should be required to wear a collar which states the permit and insurance number. Owners should first receive warnings for dogs over 30 pounds without the proof of permit and insurance collars. If the warnings do not work, the dogs should be taken from the owners, or off the street if stray, given THOROUGH health and behavior examinations, and either adopted or humanely euthanized, depending on the result of the examinations. This will cut down on the unprofessional dog selling and unauthorized breeding, poor pet ownership, animal hoarding, dog fighting, inhumane euthanization, and human and pet injuries and fatalities.

I hope they catch the people who did this and throw the book at them. Those puppies didn’t do anything wrong. The reason most dogs attack people or other animals is they are defending themselves. Dogs learn what they are taught. If they are taught to attack, that is what they will do. If more people understood this, maybe there wouldn’t be so many news stories about how bad pit bulls are. If you are going to ban a breed, why not ban pets all together?

Pits are nanny dogs. My big old baby (Moose) is possibly the sweetest most docile dog I’ve ever owned. He just wants to play & lick & cuddle & love. My 3 lb chihuahua on the other hand, is the biggest asshole you will ever meet. Little ankle biter he is. Pits are not the only breed that have records of attacking, they are just the most highly publicized because unfortunately people choose to use them for fighting. I know people that own huge dogs & don’t like little dogs, & vice versa. I also have a friend that is deathly afraid of dogs because she got attacked by a Daschund when she was younger. (Imagine a vicious little weiner). Saying an animal should be annihilated is like someone who doesn’t like felines saying “Oh, well lions maul people so they should all be annihilated”, “Hippos kill people they should be annihilated” “People kill other people they should be annihilated”. If you base wiping out an animal over it attacking other animals, we’d all be dead.

The idea that someone poisoned puppies is beyond sick. Its just awful. But as I read everyone’s comments, I wanted to put this in. My sister rescued a pit. She was very sweet and Michelle (sister) did everything right: training, socialization, lots of human and puppy plan, we took her everywhere and, in fact, Nadia (pit) was my jogging buddy. She had a great diet, lots of exercise and was super loved (spoiled!!). Sometimes, though, she got really wierd… just out of the blue. For 8 years, she was in and out of my house with my kids, always with me. Then, one day, my son walked into the kitchen with a toy — he wasn’t looking at her or boing loud or doing anything out of the ordinary and she lunged for his throat. My sister grabbed at Nadia, my teenage daughter grabbed for Tommy. Blood, muscle, tissue was all over the floor, wall and some on the ceiling. Tommy was rushed to E/R, almost lost his arm, months of anguished therapy and medical $$ like you can’t imagine. It was beyond horrific …while we were at Children’s Hosptial, two more children came in from — yes, pit bull attacks. A little girl lost her eye to a roaming pit. The little boy from Longview, Texas was like Tommy — standing in his own kitchen when the family pit just lunged. Unlike Tommy, who had raised his arm at the last second playing with his helicopter, the other boy had no toy and the dog got his neck. He bled out and died. Same age as Tommy.
Here is my take on Pits … I don’t want them extinguished or dead as once upon a time before we ruined the breed they were wonderful family pets … but now a person should be required to go through proper training before owning a pit AND there should be required insurance polcies for owning one. Today’s pit is indeed a scary breed — ticking timebombs and until we can get the “pure” nature back, they are very scary to me and my family. Until you watch a family pet flip out and attempt to kill … you really don’t understand.

Bully breeds, in my personal experience have been the best dogs i have ever came in contact with. The protection, loyalty, love, companionship. When certain people hear about an attack that has happened rather it be from a horse, small dog, large dog, snake, bird, any animal for that matter dont judge and say oh that breed of animal is just horrible killers. But with all the negitivity that has been brought on about bully breeds if someone claims they were attacked by a pit. Its mainly the only thing that is talked about. What about those people have been trampled by a horse or attacked by a small breed of dog. they dont make headline news. But as soon as a pit may have attacked someone its all over the news. An animal is still an animal. they all have the chance to attack. Plain and simple in todays world there are more attacks on humans from other humans then there are attacks on humans from pits. And still when this happens it seems to bring up more attention then when other humans do it to their own kind. I personally am more afriad of humans then any domesticated animal out there. People are so quick to judge the bully breeds esp. the pits. Yes pits may attack but they have the same chance to attack as any other animal out there. Yes the bully breed is a strong breed but you will never find a more amazing pet if you educate yourself on their behaviors give them plenty of love and make them part of your family. They will love you back and you are less likely to be attacked. They will return protect you with their lives. Most are amazing creatures. Yes there will be some bad seeds in the group but EVERY species has those, from humans to any living creature in the world. There are several reasons we all attack. neglect being #1 condition on any attack. then there is medical reasons, this list can go on and on. Facts are every species of dog, animal, plant, or human has the chance to attack how you react about is your choice. But dont judge off what others have experienced because you do not know the whole story. Nothing will attack if not provoked by some underlining cause.

A WHAT? A DERIVATIVE? In calculus, a branch of mathematics, the derivative is a measure of how a function changes as its input changes. Loosely speaking, a derivative can be thought of as how much one quantity is changing in response to changes in some other quantity; for example, the derivative of the position of a moving object with respect to time is the object’s instantaneous velocity. Derivative Rules

      Name Rule Example
      power f (x) = ax n so f ‘ (x) = nax n – 1 y = – 5x 3 , so y ‘ = – 15x 2
      product f (x) = u v, so f ‘(x) = u’ v + v’ u y = 6x 2 $ x 8 , so y ‘ = 12x ( x 8) + 6x 2 (8x 7) = 60x 9 .
      quotient
      chain y = f [g(x)], so y ‘ = f ‘[g(x)] g'(x) y = (2x 5 – 7x 2) 3, so y ‘ = 3(2x 5 – 7x 2) 2 (10x 4 – 14x)

Pits are like any dog. It depends on the owner and breeder. Traits like aggressiveness can be passed down. If the breeder doesn’t give a darn and breeds indiscriminately as to traits or wants aggressiveness you get a dog that is aggressive or possibly so. If an owner wants aggressiveness he treats the dog with aggressiveness. If an owner watches where he gets the dog and views the parents as to temperament and then raises the dog appropriate to the breed with love and not hitting or mistreatment he probably will get a sweetheart of a dog. My sister’s service dog is a pit/mastiff. She has diabetes and the dog won’t let her drive or even move if her sugar is low. She keeps a snack with her at all times if this happens. The dog lays on her lap between her and the steering wheel till it is okay. She also goes into stores with her and everywhere there is people and has done so since the dog was a young puppy. When there is lightning this 60 lb dog turns into a chicken and hides under desks and things. Another sister has a full-blood and her I watch what I do the first 10 minutes I am there till the dog knows I am okay to be in that house. I have been around a lot of pits and never been bitten. The dog I don’t care to be around are chihuahuas. I have been bitten by them. A scale I saw a few months ago showed pits at #9 and near the top of the list for bites were those chihuahuas, poodles (small ones)and the retrievers and dachshunds. We have had a lot of pit attacks also and they were by dogs not trained and not controlled by their owners (2 had pups and killed an old lady next door because the fence was not kept pit proof).

As far as my guns I think guns should require a stringent licence to buy them. Thats right a gun nut thats ok with gun control that doesnt remove rights from the people whom are right in the head and have had lots of training… Im ok with that. But my dog is one of my children, my family, just fucking try it. My two year old can torture my pit all day (not that I allow that) and wont even move. And too all of you correcting peoples spelling. That is so juvenile, grow up. Must have boring lives to just search the net all day looking to pick on some one. As im writing this my dog is laying next to me with my two year old climbing on him…. so vicious isnt he? Oops isnt is not a word is it???

These dogs were bread as fighting dogs. Pit Bulls and other bull dogs can be an extremely aggressive breed. This is a trait bred into them…intentionally no less. A study which compiled all U.S. and American press accounts of attacks and injuries by dogs from 1982-2011 showed that the largest percentage of attacks were from Pit bulls, Rottweilers, and wolf hybrids. It is a personal choice to own one of these dogs; however one must consider the risk involved if there are children in the household. If you wish to take this risk..so be it..you do not have a right to endanger your child by placing them in a household with these animals. You might as well let them play in the lions cage at the zoo!

Before you go posting what the American press stated maybe you should take the time to go and research how many times the pitbull breed was falsely accused and how many retractions there are for supposed pitbull attacks. Here’s a little knowledge for your tiny brain, most dogs today have some kind of bully breed mixed in them!!!!!! There is no such thing a PIT BULL!!!! Its a classification for numerous breeds such as the American Staffordshire Terrier, The Staffordshire terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier and so on furthermore, mastiffs, boxers, English bull dogs, american bull dogs, and numerous other breeds are considered the pit bull class, even the bull terrier! First, this poisoning may have had nothing to do with the breed. Perhaps it was just an opportunity for someone with bad intentions. And they need to be punished. Just like improper-training, or total lack of training with dogs, people are raised by other humans. The worst abused sometimes become the worst abusers. There are so many factors that are not revealed in this article. The only thing to be taken from it is that someone intending to cause harm found an opportunity with a wonderful trusting group of people trying to do the right thing and made it more difficult for them to be so trusting. It is the world we live in. Thank Heaven three of the dogs survived. God Bless the little ones who didn’t make it.

Per an article today on the Dogington Post.

“Some of the breeds to avoid or to be very careful about bringing into a home with children include Dobermans who are very dominant and may look at a child as inferior. The same can be said for the Malamutes, Rottweiler, Rhodesian Ridgeback, and Pit Bull who is either very lovable with children and adults or can be quite nasty depending on their linage and how well they have been socialized and trained. The Mini Pinschers, Pekinese, Dachshunds, and Chihuahuas are intolerant by nature, and can be very hostile towards infants and kids under the age of six years old. Dalmatians are easily excitable dogs and can easily jump on kids knocking them down. Chow Chows can be unfriendly with children due to the fact this breed normally accepts only one person for bonding with, usually an adult in the family.”

Know how to handle your dog and never leave a child alone with a pet for the safety of both the child and the pet. Teach your children a healthy dose of respect for the animal. And all pet owners need to take responsibility for the proper training of their pet whether it is a seemingly docile dog or one suspected of being a more aggressive dog. Research, Research, Research.

As a veterinarian I see alot of pit bulls (mixed ethnic area), and about 98% are very sweet to humans, they trot over happily to greet me when I open the door and are not trouble examing and giving them injections or oral medications needed. In the six years that I have practiced here, I have seen maybe 5 or 6 with bite wound injuries.

Now, I have not encountered them outside such as in neighborhoods except one broke out of wooden fence and killed my neighbors labrador dog living behind same fence. I was still at work and did not witness this horrible event. Does anyone know what makes some of these dogs killers of other dogs, or are they trained by humans for fighting purposes? He was sweet as can be to humans & to our other dog, but his mission in life was to hunt & kill anything that was smaller than him & made any kind of movement. I’m convinced what made him that way was a very high prey drive. It seemed like he was a cat…they do the same thing because they’re hunters! Some experts don’t agree with the whole prey drive idea, but I think the only other explanation is if he was fought or hunted hogs under the care of his previous owner. Other than him, we’ve owned 3 other pit bulls & will now never own another breed….the love we have w/ them can’t compare to any of the other breeds we had even though we loved them so very much. Also, I’ve met several dozen other pit bulls owned by friends & family, etc. and not a single one of them has a bad bone in their body.

these things are always incredibly sad. These dogs need several generations of crossbreeding to make them good pets. However the person who mentioned dominion over all animals does not understand what the word meant in the context of the bible
    Authority
    Creating
    Psalms
    Works

Psalm 8:6. A Biblical definition of stewardship is “having dominion over the works of God”. This definition comes from Psalm 8:6 which says, “Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou has put all things under his feet;”. This scripture affirms that God is the Creator of all things, and he has given mankind dominion over his creation. The works of God’s hands includes all the material things and creatures of the Earth. We as stewards are not the owners of these things, but we are the stewards who have dominion of these things.

We are all stewards and have dominion of God’s creation whether we accept this or not. God has honored us and has given us great responsibilities. As stewards of God’s property, we have a responsibility to care and nurture the things that are of God. If we are good stewards, we show we are faithful to God and he does reward us. If we are bad stewards, we show that we are unfaithful and only have allegiance to our own selfish desires. As bad stewards, we may have dominion of God’s resources, but it will not end well.

PSALM 8 BIBLE DEFINITION Psalm 8:6, “Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou has put all things under his feet;”

What this means is that we have the responsibilty to care for all that God has created. It does not mean that we can do whatever we please with God’s creations. We were given the job of taking care of the earth and all the other living things on it. And we have done a lousy job of it.

      • Correction, Jaloney. Pit Bulls were bred as working dogs to control bulls for farmers – hence the name “Pit Bull”. They were absolutely NOT created to fight or kill. A vast majority of all pit bulls are gentle, sweet, loving, and loyal. It is only after a HUMAN trains this special breed to fight or to be vicious that they become that way. It is NOT a trait that is bred into them.

Additionally, for over a hundred years, pit bulls were named “Nanny Dogs” because, if you had children and wanted to keep them safe, a pit bull was the most reliable and predictable breed around children.

Now, because of misinformed people like yourself, over 6,000 of these precious animals are euthanized every single day. Sickening.

The german sheperd is the most tolerant, they can tolerate the most punishment from children.(pokeing and pulling) The second most tolerant dog is the pit. Pittbull jaws do not lock its just has a massive bite. People are what make the animal mean, being aggressive toward, hitting, kicking, just being f ing cruel will cause a dog to attact. Would you not defend yourself from someone being cruel to you.Would you defend the family, that loves, feeds and takes care of you.THATS WHAT THEY DO! If you dont like dogs dont own one, but dont judge those of us who are proud to say “THIS HOUSE IS PROTECTED BY A PITTBULL.” if she dont get you the bullet will!

        Jaloney,
Please stop with the accusation that these puppies had Parvo. I have witnessed what happens when puppies contract this disease. It took 5 days for them to die. First they quit eating, and became lethargic. By day 3 they quit drinking, even water. For 4 days before their death they had bloody diarrhea.Day 5 they died. These puppies at that event died from being poisoned. Please educate yourself on the type of dog, as Pit Bulls are a type of dog, not a breed, and get your facts straight about Parvo.

That is so sick and screwed up! Absolutely heinous. I really hope they don’t stop taking their rescues and pups to events though. They just need to be more strict, not letting anyone outside the rescue have unsupervised contact with the dogs or the dog’s things. I just don’t want the dogs not getting out there and being seen by potential GOOD adopters because of a few criminal nutbags. So sad 🙁

        • Jaloney has a right to his/her opinion. I agree that the cause of death is not clear. Did they perform an autopsy?
Why would someone go to an event just to poison the dogs? That only elicits sympathy for a useless breed whose only function, to fight, is prohibited by law in almost every state.
Some very excellent dog owners have had pit bulls kill other peoples’ dogs, cats and even children. The aggression and power to kill is bred into them. They grab on with those very powerful jaws and will not release. They ignore pain. Their ancestors would have died in the ring fighting other dogs if they had not excelled in these qualities. If you have ever read White Fang by Jack London you will know that White Fang, who was half wolf, excelled at fighting but when confronted with a pit bull was almost killed. His technique of jumping in, slashing, and jumping back was ineffective with a smaller, squat dog with powerful jaws who jumped in, grabbed him by his throat and gradually chewed his way into the neck until White Fang was almost asphyxiated.
It is about as sensible to keep a tiger or a lion because they also can seem friendly and affectionate and can suddenly change. It is not their fault. It is their instinctive reaction. This is especially true of an unneutered male. Higher testosterone levels make them more unpredictable. I saw on Dr. Pol a case where a mother pit bull killed her own puppy when he tried to eat from her bowl.
There are plenty of dogs who do not present these threats who need homes. Adopting pit bulls and other fighting breeds just gives the underground breeders more of a cash outlet for their cruel “sport.”

Always owned Pits. Never been aggressive. Never been bit by one. I adopt from shelters and one I have now was a dog I found injured on the side of the road. Full pit. Male. He climbed into my lap and stole my heart. Was underweight and had a little issue with food, HOWEVER…once he realized that my other dogs would not touch his dish, and there would ALWAYS be food…it ended..took 2 days. He now waits patiently after eating to sip water. Pits are PEOPLE dogs and were ORIGINALLY bred to be Nanny Dogs (companions for young children). They have a strong desire to please their masters, and actually, while some are food motivated…All mine have been trained with positive attention motivation (a rub, cuddle or a smootch is a better training tool for pits)

In that same period, 65% of attacks that resulted in bodily harm were caused by Pit Bulls. Pit Bulls are 4% of the dog population. We acquired a tiny pit at 8 pounds that was being abused and was destined for the killing pound, and now 80+ and she is a real sweet gem of a dog. She is gentle and good with everyone and welcomes everyone to our home as an ambassador. Still, I would not trust any dog with children who are strange as things can trigger a negative reaction, food, teasing, just as a thought that I always consider when my pit or Siberians are with the children. Our dogs are good, but all it takes sometimes is a look into the eye direction of a dog and it is a challenge for aggression. Small children whose eyes naturally are the same height as the dogs can pose a problem. I am more concerned with ankle sized dogs than a large dog because little ones try to show aggression to make up for their small size. I used to hate Pits because of all the bad stories about them, but there are so many more good ones and I love ours and she loves us in return with so much appreciation.

        • I agree with Paul Cumming. We have just as much right to our opinions as anyone else. The fighting breeds which includes all bulldogs, Chow Chows, Akita s, Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and Mastiffs should require a special license. They were bred to be able to fight other animals and many were used to fight other dogs. It is a part of their makeup the way retrieving or herding is the part of the makeup of other specially bred dogs. They have the power to maim and kill and the statistics prove they do it.
People like to say, “It’s not the dog, it’s the owner.” That is true to the extent that the owner should be held responsible for their dog’s predations. However, all dogs behave differently toward those who are accepted in their pack and those who aren’t. Those people who say “He doesn’t bite,” are thinking their dog acts the same to outsiders. Some do NOT. Furthermore, although all dogs have instinctive aggression towards outsiders, the smaller, weaker breeds can not inflict nearly as much damage.

That being said, it was a golden retriever who burst out of his yard and attempted to murder my dog- unprovoked. We adopted a pit bull after than incident, and guess what? She and my sheltie snuggle every night.

If we’re using your line of thinking, I guess ALL big dogs should require a special license, since they can “inflict more harm”.

I really suggest researching pits and other “dangerous breeds”. Other dogs attack just as often, but those stories aren’t in the media nearly as much. A golden attacks? Maybe it’s in a local media outlet once. A pit attacks? In 100 + media outlets. Just so you know, the owner of the golden refused to accept any responsibility because he has a golden. He couldn’t possibly be dangerous!

One last thought- one of my childhood friends got her face ripped open by a chihuahua. She had to get surgery, and many years later, still has noticable scars. Just some food for thought…

It is the owners who make these animals vicious. I have also owned a Rotten dobie who was as sweet as sweet could be unless I gave the command. He was nurtured and loved but knew what his job was as does my boxer now. Dogs are like children – they need to be trained, loved and nurtured. And like the other poster said – garbage in – garbage out. As far as the pits attacking a child – no child should be left alone with an animal especially a small child.

And also this story. A frantic young mother ran screaming from from her parent’s house screaming ‘My baby, my baby’ after her week old son was killed by the family’s pet terrier.
Eight-day-old Harry Harper is understood to have suffered a crushed skull after being bitten just once by the Jack Russell-cross. The animal has since been destroyed.

I know a person whose airedale was attacked by 2 different labs. Who owned the labs? White trash. A lab is just a powerful as a pit bull. I have a chocolate lab that has wrestled around at a dog park with probably 50 different pit bulls and she always completely dominates them. And I’m talking rough wrestling, knocking each other down, etc. Not once did any of those pit bulls show any aggression. If my wife and I were trash and mistreated our lab, she could be a very dangerous dog. And Mastiffs? Have you ever been around a mastiff? You sound like a person who is very fearful. So, you probably easily soil yourself when you see a dog like a mastiff. But, they are incredibly laid back dogs. You clearly have no idea about dogs. But to say a person needs a “special license” to have a mastiff or any other breed makes you look like a fool.

I’m a responsible dog owner & my dogs are good canine citizens who have never bitten. Educate yourself! Here is some actual research, not just theory.
Pit Bulls are not an aggressive breed of dog.
*According to the American Temperament Testing Association, APBTs have an 85.3% passing rate, compared to a passing rate of 81.9% for all breeds on average.
*In the test a dog is placed in a series of confrontational situations. The first sign of aggression or panic is a failure of the test.
Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling found that there is no genetic evidence that one breed of dog is more dangerous than another.
During World War I , the Pit Bull was often used to represent America.

1.) About 40 people (children) per year die by drowning in 5-gallon water pails. A person, during their lifetime, is 16 times more likely to drown in a 5-gallon water pail than to be killed by a Pit Bull.

2.) Approximately 50 children in the US are killed every year by their cribs – 25 times the number of children and adults killed by Pit Bulls.

3.) Approximately 150 people are killed every year by falling coconuts. Therefore, you are more than 60 TIMES MORE LIKELY to be killed by a PALM TREE than a Pit Bull.

4.) Each year, 350 people drown in their bathtubs. You are 151 times more likely to be killed by your bathtub than you are by a Pit Bull.

            5) Every year, more than 2,000 children in the U.S. are killed by their parents or guardians either through abuse or neglect. A child is more than 800 times more likely to be killed by their caretaker than by a Pit Bull.

            6) It can be estimated that for every Pit Bull who kills, there are 10.5 MILLION that DON’T!

The truth behind fatal dog attacks:
Extensive research and investigation has conclusively identified the ownership/management practices that are at the root of the rare, but perfect, storm when a dog becomes dangerous.

            Function of Dog –
Owners obtaining dogs, and maintaining them as resident dogs outside of the household for purposes other than as family pets (i.e. guarding/ protection, fighting, intimidation/status, irresponsible and negligent breeding).

Owner Management & Control of Dogs
Owners failing to humanely contain, control and maintain their dogs (chained dogs, loose roaming dogs, cases of abuse/neglect); owners failing to knowledgably supervise interaction between children and dogs.

            Reproductive Status of Dog –
Owners failing to spay or neuter animals not used for competition, show, or in a responsible breeding program.

In 2006, 97% of the fatal attacks were the result of one or more of these reckless or criminal ownership practices.

I’m tired of reading about Pit Bull attacks against children in the home and owners say, “oh, he never bit anyone ever before” or “she always was so playful with our children.” Maybe it’s the breed, maybe it’s the type of owners attracted to the breed, but I think the statistics hold more value than anyone’s feelings on the matter. some suggest, it could also be an owner situation as
a contributing factor (bad breed/bad owner). For one
example, I have a friend in Gainesville, Fla who had
a neighbor that owned 2 large & aggressive pit bulls.
This character was an ex-con who’d spent a few years
in prison for assault with a deadly weapon (something
my friend found out later). His male pit bull somehow
broke out of its fenced yard, mauled & killed the fam-
ily pet – a 14 year old cat. At a later date, friend
was about to step off his porch into the yard when he
noticed the male pit bull at his front door, growling
at him. Luckily for him, he ducked back inside, avoid-
ing a probable attack. He then called th local animal
control who sent an officer out a couple days later,
2 investigate. 2 days afterward, the enraged neighbor
confronted my friend about “reporting him”. My friend
responded that if his pit bull(s) attempted to attack
him or his niece, he would blast’em with his shotgun,
in self-defense, to which the neighbor told him that
he would “cut his throat” if he messed with his dogs!
Friend then called the police, who sent 3 patrol cars
out immediately to defuse the situation. It’s in the
legal system at this time, so don’t know the outcome.
Maybe when “Dr. Debbie’ (no last name, doc/?) comes
home from work one day and her sweet, gentle pit bull
bites her in the butt, like so many pit bulls have in

Please explain HOW the world would be better…I think it’s be better without the PEOPLE who do this. Pits are used as fighting dogs because they LOOK tough and they have an INTENSE desire to please their owners. These idiots who train the dogs to fight KNOW this and use it.

People have chose to do this to these dogs. It sad that people fail to realize that it is not the breed it is the stupid people in this world that have caused pits to be labeled as this. You keep a dog from other human contact and teach them others are not welcome then yes you have a monster but when you train them correctly then they are wonderful family dogs.

Not only do the fighting dogs suffer, but also the “bait” dogs used to train the fighting dogs. The dogs are not “born that way”, they are beaten and starved in an attempt to make them mean. Even then, some of the dogs just do not want to fight. Those are the dogs that people like Michael Vick put to death in order to make room for other dogs who will undergo the same harsh treatment. Stop blaming the innocent dogs for what the evil people do to them.

No, really the world would be better off without human beings. We are the ones that started fighting dogs and using them to look “tough”. Pit Bulls are not “fighting” dogs, they were meant to work on cattle farms. Men started fighting them for fun and financial gain. These “men” are not macho, they are sad, sick individuals that need to be locked away for the safety of society because if today they think watching chickens or dogs fight to the death is fun, tomorrow they might decide that watching humans do the same would be fun, or financially beneficial to them. Not that there is much difference. Watching any living thing suffer for your own gain whether it is entertainment or money means that you do not value life, and if you do not value it, you should not get to keep it.

I am a 30 something white woman who has owned 2 pit bulls. I never had them for the image, or to look cool. I have had them because I rescued the first one from an abusive situation and had never had such an intelligent, lovable pet in all of my life. She hooked me on the breed and I have found them to be amazingly smart, loyal, and loving. The only bad pit bulls I have ever encountered were that way because they had bad owners who were poor representatives of the human race. Taken from their bad environments and given the opportunity to heal and be loved they almost always become wonderful pets.

Just like all men are not guilty of the crimes of a small percentage of men, all dogs are not guilty of the crimes of a small percentage of their breed.

Finally, the person that poisoned puppies is a coward and a poor excuse for a human being and I am sorry to be the same species as that loser. I hope they live a long, long life and find no happiness or joy in it, spending all of their days alone and miserable to finally be on the news as the elderly person found mummified in their junk filled home after having died 5 years previously and never been missed because no one loved or cared about them. Even better, I wish them the same, but with immortality so that they can spend eternity being unloved and alone.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies and animal control officers were searching Thursday afternoon by air for a pack of pit bulls believed to have mauled a woman to death earlier in the day in the Antelope Valley community of Littlerock.
The 63-year-old woman was out for her morning walk when she was mauled by the dogs. Her name has not been released. She died en route to the hospital.

Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Parker said a motorist saw the dogs attacking the woman, who was on the ground, and called 911. Parker said deputies are continuing to search for the tan-colored dogs both on the ground and by air.
