Tennessee Man Abandons Dog For Being ‘Gay’

An adorable, loving, yet understandably frightened Bulldog-mix is finally safe at his new forever home after his former owner dropped him off at a high-kill animal shelter in Jackson, Tennessee. The owner’s reason for throwing away his pet – he said the dog was gay.

The following plea for help was posted to the Jackson TN Euthanasia Facebook page, a page dedicated to saving the lives of dogs in Tennessee and surrounding areas that are being held in high-kill shelters, awaiting euthanasia:

This guy was signed over to RC, not bc he’s mean or bc he tears things up, but because… His owner says he’s gay! He hunched another male dog so his owner threw him away bc he refuses to have a “gay” dog! Even if that weren’t the most assinine thing I’ve ever heard, its still discrimination! Don’t let this gorgeous dog die bc his owner is ignorant of normal dog behavior! He’s in kennel 10L and he WILL be put down tomorrow bc there is no room at the inn!

Thanks to the dedication of the Jackson TN Euthanasia Facebook page that got the word out about the The white and black Bulldog-mix, now named Elton, found a home with a responsible dog owner, a vet tech named Stephanie Fryns who says the dog is friendly but scared, though he loves car rides.

As any (even remotely) educated dog owner knows, dogs mounting other dogs has nothing at all to do with sexuality and is all about dominance.  Both male and female dogs will commonly mount other dogs, regardless of their sex, in an attempt to establish their place in the group.

It’s a sad world we live in when a precious animal is nearly sentenced to death for an owner’s ignorance. Please, as responsible dog owners, take the time to educate others whenever possible.

I can almost guarantee the previous owner was NOT a redneck hick, LOL! Redneck hicks grow up in the country and around animals, so they are well aware that young male animals (not just dogs) will hump anything, whether it’s the same sex OR breed! Goats put dogs to shame in this category. Like one of the other commenters said: “Ya’ can’t fix stupid”. LOL

This dog was saved, but they are always getting new dogs at Jackson Rabies Control (JRC) who aren’t so lucky. They only hold strays for three days. And, owner surrendered dogs do not need to be held at all because they know nobody is looking for them, so the dogs can be euthanized the same day they are brought in if it happens to be kill day.By the way, this shelter still uses the inhumane heart stick. If you don’t know what that is, please look it up.

All shelter dogs and cats have their own stories, even if their stories aren’t known. And, most aren’t lucky enough to have their stories make the news. But, they ALL deserve to be saved just as much as “Elton” did. If you are considering getting a pet, please adopt! Don’t shop. You will be saving a life. And, yours will be more fulfilled by doing so.

Thank you for such a thoughtful comment, Leigh. You’re absolutely right, every animal in every shelter has a story of how they landed there. Of the thousands of people that responded and attempted to adopt this dog, many, many more should have been saved. It always fascinates me that as soon as a dog makes the news for any reason at all, people come out of the woodwork to adopt him, ignoring the other animals in cages right alongside him. At the very least, we hope that getting Elton’s story out there makes more people aware of the precious animals sitting in cages waiting for someone to love.

This type of person shouldn’t be allowed to even think … how dumb can people get… my door is always open to dogs that need help but not humans like this… no wonders why I like living with my dogs…. also in Penn state news papers call this dog gay as well …I was down in Pa awhile back and those people are a mess as well … dumb people are just dumb any more these days…. how nice the world would be if people could love like dogs do…
