A deputy says he was in fear for his life when he shot and killed Scarlett, a 9-year old Labrador retriever who, at the time of the shooting, was tethered to a run-line strung between two secure poles in her own backyard.
York County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jonathan Reed visited the South Carolina home of Alice Renee McGlone last week, at the request of McGlone’s daughter, a resident Virginia, after she had been unable to contact her mother for several days.
When deputies arrived, no one was home. There were no cars in the driveway and no one answered their knocks at the front door. When Deputy Reed noticed a broken window screen at the side of the house, he went to investigate.
According to The State, after Reed began knocking on the window, that’s when he saw the dog “charging” and “snarling with bared teeth,” with its head lowered. Reed says he saw that the dog was tethered, but that “the leash was long enough to allow the dog to reach me before I could get away.”
Reed further explains that he didn’t have time to either retreat or use less lethal force and “instinctively drew my handgun and fired once, striking the dog in the top of the head.”
Reed wrote in his report that as he walked toward the rear of the house, he saw no indication that a dog was present. However, in addition to the two poles and run-line that Scarlett was tethered to, there was a dog house in a back corner of the yard and a sign that read “Bad Dog.”
McGlone said the “Bad Dog” sign was posted to the dog house as a joke by one of her relatives because the 9-year old Lab, who she adopted from a shelter at 6-weeks old, was a total sweetheart and best friend to her two cats, Rhett Butler and Tara.
After reviewing the recording from Reed’s microphone worn during the incident, Captain Allen Brandon believes the deputy had no choice but to protect himself.
McGlone and neighbors that knew the dog, including young children that often played with her or helped to watch her while McGlone was away, can’t understand how the officer felt to threatened that he needed to fire his gun at her.
“It was a fairly nice day and it was good for her to be outside,” McGlone said. “Something told me to just bring Scarlett in and I didn’t. And I beat myself up for that.”
In the video below, McGlone’s friend, Ron Montana, who helped to bury Scarlett, shows the backyard and insists that the shooting was not necessary:

So tired of police officers using the “I was feaerful for my life” EXCUSE. They ALWAYS get away with it. This is why so many people are giving up their citizenship, because of criminals such as the officer that shot this dog. That’s what he really is…a criminal that uses his badge as a way of getting away with his criminal activity. When does it stop? When will officers such as this be made to pay for their crimes? When they meet their maker. One day. this man will
no longer be able to hide behind his badge. It’s police like this that make it bad on other GOOD police officers. May he be made to suffer as much as he caused suffering to both dog and the family of said dog. Remember, KARMA! THIS IS WHY I WILL NEVER ALLOW A POLICE OFFICER TO ENTER MY PREMISES, or EVEN TO BE ON IT, now. I will NEVER ALLOW MY ANIMALS OUTSIDE ALONE, either.

Kathy – you made a very good point about shooting in the air – with any luck the bullet would have come straight down and Reed would have shot himself.
This is my email:
Sheriff:
I don’t know what kind of uneducated, reckless people you hire, but Policeman Reed needs to be terminated immediately for shooting Scarlett, a leashed dog on the private property of Alice McGlone. Anyone with a brain would have circled the property to determine whether there was danger present, but Reed just charges forward and proceeds knocking on windows.
Reed needs to be terminated immediately on charges of stupidity, murdering a pet, and discharging a weapon on private property.
Here in Texas, at the sound of a gun on private property, Reed would have been shot, and you would not have this administrative headache.
I will be posting this on as many sites as I can find that actually care about police brutality.

I would think that if the officer was that scared and felt the need to pull his gun and fire .. if he fired in the air and not at the dog .. the dog might hv stopped which might hv given the officer enough time to get out of reach.

Another case of excessive force by an officer toward a dog. I think since they dont get to shoot real criminals they use dogs as target practice. It is a real shame when a pet is killed in its own yard and on a tether. That cop could have backed away quickly unless he is 300 lbs and a slow moron. Im just sick of cops killing dogs and getting away with it. What if the owner was home amd thought the cop was an intruder and shot him. all hell would break lose against the home owmer. even if the cop was in uniform, thats doesnt prove he IS a cop. some bad people get uniforms… I just yhink that officer was wrong and he should be suspended. He is obvipusly gun happy.

This officer obviously needs to be disarmed and placed on desk-duty, shuffling papers. He simply panicked, took careful aim, and shot this lady’s dog in the head. That’s a deliberate kill shot. It shows extremely poor judgment.
What is happening in America with cops and shootings? Thousands of citizens are shot each year, and pets as well. This will not do.

I am a retired Police Officer and I currently work in Rescue with Dachshunds, I can see both sides of this story. Although none of us were there I can Imagine what the officer felt. The Report said he saw the line and the dog house and sign that said Bad Dog but did not originally see the dog. When he DID see the dog, the dog was charging, teeth bared. The Officer had seconds to decide what to do. He DID NOT KNOW the dog, the only “info” he had on the dog was a sign that said “BAD DOG” which he did not know was a joke, so believed the Dog to be a “Bad Dog”. He believed his life was in danger and didn’t have time to run back to the car to get a bean bag gun, which would have been non lethal. But he did have to do something, and the really only weapon he had was his weapon and, even though all the tv shows cops shooting a leg, or shooting a gun out of someones hand, in an emergency, when adreline is pumping, you shoot to center of mass. When your life is in danger, you do what is needed to save your own life. No Officer (or other person) should have to put up with being bitten when in the right. When a dog is charging, usually the head is somewhat lowered and so would have been in center of mass where the officer was shooting. Now Even “Great Dogs” will protect their owners. IF the dog felt that his family was threatened by someone (in this case an Officer) messing with the windows, the dog COULD have charged with intent to injure or kill the “threat” to his family. So it could have been as the officer said it was. Sadly whenever an Officer uses his weapon, people are all to ready to rip the officer apart. But when an Officer doesn’t use his weapon and gets severely injured or killed, people call him an idiot for not using his weapon. Until you have been in the shoes of an officer and had the snot kicked or beat or shot out of you, it is tough to see their point of view. I am sorry that dog lost his life. The world has lost a beautiful animal. But the person who put up the “Bad Dog” sign is partically responsible.

Sir, it was a head shot. It was not a center of mass shot. The dog was on a very strong restraint. All he had to do was move away. He was making a routine check on a house for a person who had not been heard from. There was no suspicion of foul play. He was not in a hurry. Why did he not thoroughly scope out the yard first.
None of this makes the least bit of sense.

SL…thats what i call well worded hogwash. Im so sick of hearing of cops shooting family dogs for basically no reason and then making a fool of themselves with some outlandish story! It dont take a lot of smarts to look at a dog and determine pretty quickly what the dogs true intentions are…but no…its always shoot 1st and then make up a lame excuse to justify their actions. Family pets…being a dog…barking at an intruder…in their home or yard…cop or no cop…thats what dogs do! It freaks me out at some of the stories i have heard when a harmless family pet has been shot by a cop and its becoming more and more frequent! If i had shot every dog in my 58 years here on earth that barked or ran toward me i would be a mass murderer of dogs…but guess what…i havent shot one…Hummmmmmm

I drove two states away to check on my mother. Never dawned on me to call the cops when I couldn’t reach her. Either one of her dogs would have been protective of her or their home. I find it hard to believe that this officer did not realize that any dog would have done the same thing. He was walking around this dogs property and looking in a window. The dog was tethered and not running free. Surely the office could have taken a few steps back if he felt threatened or even called to the dog. There are too many pet dog killings by officers. More training should be given to insure that this does not happen again. What if it had been a child/kid that ran from the back of the property towards the officer….would he have been trigger happy enough to shoot??

As a dog owner, I had signs posted on my front door, back yard, on utility pole; “Beware of Dog”, not because he is vicious, just to let people know he is there. Also, I never leave him outside when I am not home.
Not blaming her for the loss of her beloved pet, just saying we all must take responsibility for our pets. She knew the police were on their way to her home. A 1 minute call to let them know she was fine and no need to go to the home from either her or her daughter should have been done.

I am by no means excusing the policeman’s reaction, but I think there is more to the story and should be investigated. The cop was there on a welfare check. He saw a broken window and went to investigate further. So far sounds legit to me. The line was a standard rope which could be a clothesline and not necessarily a dog run. He was focused on the house which could mean he didn’t notice the dog house at first. The dog saw a stranger in the back yard….my lab would be protective in that case and not look like the friendliest dog even though he was. Due to the run being in the backyard, the officer probably did not know the length of the leash and where a safe spot was. I don’t condone the killing of any animals and this case is no exception, but before people get sue happy, maybe an unbiased view of the situation should be considered. There are a lot of what ifs in this situation….The woman knew the police were coming to investigate. ..could have contacted the police to say it was not necessary. Too many variables to just accuse the cop of a callous and unwarranted reaction.

I owned a lab and my 90 lb. boy would lick you to death but if he felt I was threatened in any way you would definitely see his pearly whites not to mention the growl behind it.
People with dogs should always have signs visibly posted on the gates and/or houses; “Beware of Dog” or some kind of warning there is an animal in the residence.
I had done a welfare check on an elder relative and upon doing so, I also notified the police she did have a dog on the premises. Animal control was notified and went along with sedation just in case. Something so simple.

They seem to feel they need to “shoot to kill” not to maim or wound to stop them. I am the mother of 2 retired officers, one due to injuries sustained in the line of duty after serving 14 years. The one thing they both are constant about is never take the written word in the newspapers as gospel. You can read the same story in 5 different papers and get 5 different scenarios. They both will tell you how easy it is to think “gee he could have stepped back” or “he could’ve done this or that”, but no one knows for sure unless you are in that exact same situation. And I do mean exact. As for what your husband would have done, the same applies.

This is soooo very sad. I understand there are incidents where deadly force is necessary ( if a dog is chewing on a person or another animal ) but I don’t believe it was necessary in this situation. I never write or comment but this one has my attention; my dogs are never in my yard without me being home but if I did not answer the door, the police have a right to enter my rear yard and shoot my dog…ARE YOU SERIOUS??!! The dog was doing was natural and instinctive, and one of the many reasons the owner had the dog….why on earth wouldn’t the officer leave the back yardif there possible any threat of harm to him, the danger was that someone was in the home since supposedly the screen was out, or the homeowner was in some type of danger, NOT that her dog was on his own property, on a leash, under control, that was not the officers’ issue, this is not an officer, this is not a man, if I lived in this city I would be taking action and care that this didn’t possibly happen again to anyone. You can’t bring the family member back but you can take steps to assure this officer (not) isn’t allowed to have a gun, and possibly doesn’t happen to another family.

Its a disgrace it really is, and i would shoot that bastard cop if I was allowed a gun and lived in that country. The trouble is you in the USA do like guns. and cops use them as if they are toys. Valerie, I completely agree with you. I am an American and I am appalled at the love of guns in this nation of mine. I don’t know if we will ever wake up and realize the rest of the world doesn’t live this way. I don’t want to worry about my kids going to the mall and being shot; going to work and being shot; going to school and being shot. It is sickening. When will the cost become to high a burden…when all of us have lost a loved one to gun violence? Cops are just as bad…shooting dogs for trumped up reasons; shooting a knife-wielding mentally ill person to death; shooting blacks much more often than whites. Sad place to live at times.

I don’t understand how anyone could shoot a dog when it was tethered. I was a meter reader for many years and I an the crew I worked with came crossed many mean dogs. Never did we have to kill one. Not to say we never had to use Maze on them. He lacks training in how to deal with them. I feel that the governing body over him 1. Should see that he gets the training he needs. 2. I don’t know where you were a meter reader but where I live, if a dog is the area of the meter they will not approach to read and leave a note on the front door; “meter not read because your dog was present”. When the police arrived, Tank was on HIS OWN patio, NOT leashed and when the police approached him he just sat there as trained, but when the police officer pulled his gun, Tank growled as trained and the office shot and killed him on HIS OWN PATIO….Needless to say, we proceeded with action and the officer was fired and they had to replace our dog….of course nothing will replace him as he was one of a kind…he was family….Obtain an attorney.

Agree…..first step obtain an attorney, second step, file suit against the city, civil suit against the officer (not), and get animal rights involved to assist, this is truly unbelievable….I am so sorry that this happened to you too…. it makes me never want to leave my babies alone… I would stand in front of them before I would let an officer (not) shoot them.

Seems a little trigger happy. A law enforcement officer cannot “shoot first, ask questions later” Is he even remorseful? Saying, “Hey, I made a mistake” is better than nothing. To claim he acted appropriately is just wrong. Man up, officer! And stay the hell out of MY backyard!

The officer was on a welfare check initiated by her daughter. When there was no answer at the front door, he went around the back to check there, which is a normal act when doing a welfare check.

Sickening … with an absurd explanation. Did this officer REALLY think this lab would kill or harm him in such a way that he feared for his LIFE? What the hell is wrong with these people… and the departments that employ them?!

You Nancy are a fool who has never had a gun pulled on them or been in any physical danger. Some cops are under trained, as this one seems to have been, but shoot him? Really?
Debra Mulhall
Mar 10, 2014 at 11:12 am
To the owner: Please, please obtain a lawyer and bring a suit against this police department and individuals involved. This happens way too often and police departments do nothing about it. Training needs to be done for all police officers and some officers should not be in uniform carrying a weapon. Only when police departments and individuals have to pay hefty lawsuit settlements will they take this matter seriously. Please do this to help save other pets.

To the Officer: Get a lawyer and sue the dog’s owner for endangering him while he checked her unsecured residence and sue all of the people on this blog for threatening and slandering him.

Mr. Houser I do wish you would find another way to entertain yourself other than posting things just to make other people angry. If you have nothing constructive to say and just want to irritate people please go back to high school where you belong. There is enough negativity in this world please stop instigating more.
I am truly sorry for the loss of the pet. I hope the officer did not do it on purpose but a deeper investigation is necessary.

Thanks for your concern. No, no and its a free country. The poor dog is dead and the owner is responsible. Get over it.

Doogie, the dog was on a tether, in the back yard. If the officer was so unaware of his surroundings that he did not see the dog, he should retire. If he is able to draw and fire faster than move away, he is the fastest draw on his force, or grossly obese. The owner had the dog where it should be, in their yard. The dog did it’s job, and detected the intruder to the yard, and attempted to notify the house. The officer panicked, and over-reacted. The only one clearly wrong here is the troll instigating high blood pressure. It is a free country, and there are those who take advantage of that, and contribute nothing of any value in return. I am sure you are one of those, and proud of it. As such, I will just wish you an infestation of fleas in all your body hair locales. Have a nice day, and stock up on Raid as a deodorant.

Unfortunately, and unbelievably, a study found that HALF of all intentional shootings by police involve dogs. If that is not an epidemic that needs to be addressed I don’t know what is.
Read about the study here: seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2019809359_rosie02m.html?prmid=head_main

If the deputy will shoot a defenseless dog who was not a threat to him…can you imagine what he would do to a human being…Sounds like he never had any kind of training..I will not go through York County, South Carolina if at all possible and warn all my friends and family to travel another route. This officer is a disgrace to the uniform. Can’t believe his illiterate bosses let him get away with this. This was a family pet.

Boy Doogie your ignorance is really showing. This was a family pet who was secured in her own backyard. All officers should be trained in dog safety. This was uncalled for and you know it. All he had to do is turn and walk away and that would have been it. This is shameful and that “officer” should not be allowed to carry a gun. Afraid for his life my ass, he just wanted to kill something. Probably the only time he ever got the chance to pull his gun. He’s a coward!
