A Sulphur, Louisiana police officer is under investigation after the fatal shooting of a dog last week. While the officer claims the shooting was in self-defense, witnesses are disputing that claim.
Brandon Carpenter, a traveling musician from Portland, Maine, along with his 14-month-old Newfoundland-Labrador-golden retriever mix, and his friend, Logan, had just arrived in Sulphur by train. Seeking shelter from the rain, the trio hopped into the back of an empty box truck in the parking lot of the Southwest Daily News newspaper.
About 10 minutes later, they were ordered by a police officer, at gunpoint, to get out. When the officer told Carpenter to secure his dog, he tied the 90-pound dog, named Arzy Kensington, to a nearby fence using the dog’s 4-foot leash.
The officer asked Carpenter if his dog was friendly and, according to an eyewitness, then approached the dog, whose tongue was out and tail wagging, and pet him for a few seconds.
About 20-seconds later, Carpenter, who was handcuffed and ordered on the ground, facing away from his dog, heard the fatal gunshot.
The officer claims that Arzy tried to attack him, but the witness, a newspaper employee that watched the entire incident unfold, says the dog simply playfully bumped into him. The witness explained to KPLC TV, “The dog never growled or bared its teeth, never bit the officer.”
Carpenter and his friend were charged with vehicular trespassing and released a few hours later.
Meanwhile, Carpenter is devastated over the brutal and unnecessary killing of his beloved, gentle dog.
“All he had to do is take one giant step back,” he said in a phone interview with Southwest Daily News on Tuesday. “Why didn’t he ask me to move the dog or just take one big step back if he was uncomfortable?”

Good job officer. another flea ridden piece of crap dog gone. The guy shouldn’t have been in the truck to begin with. Dogs are not people or children…they are things. Glad the officer is OK and I hope he gets counseling at the dig owners expense.

This makes me sick. This is the worst I’ve heard of these incidents. He petted the dog, then when the owner is down and handcuffed the asshole kills the dog. I am convinced this idot killed this dog for the sake of killing. The dog was tethered on a short four foot leash, which after being tied to something shortens it further. He petted the dog then it turns aggressive and tries to attack him? Bullshit. That’s just not going to happen. He needs to go down, hard. Fired, and removed from the police force entirely. There are far too many of these cases out there. It’s becoming acceptable among the police in some places. I cannot express the depth of my hatred for these people that do this.

If what I read about this incident is correct,I believe this walloper should lose his job. NO one with this lack of sensitivity should have any authority over the population of any town or city. To give this man a gun beggers belief. In Australia he’d be well advised to resign, and leave town.

We need to hold officers of the law accountable for their actions as well as civilians IF they perform non-regulatory actions. Shooting an innocent animal should carry the same harsh penalties as shooting an innocent person. “Your badge, officer?”

I want this asshole to answer for this, he should be charged and lose his job. This was murder. But I must counter your claim that there has never been an aggressive golden. American Temperament Testing Society tests different breeds every year. There have been annual reports in the past that have ranked goldens as one of the highest fails. This past year had 15% of them fail the testing. So never just isn’t so. That said, they aren’t the highest by far this past year.

There is no such thing as an aggressive breed of dog. NONE, no BREED is aggressive, but some dogs are, and its usually fear based, as you would react if you were afraid, fight or flight. I was bit hard, Hard in the thigh by a yellow lab. Labs and Golden retrievers and a handful of the other “family dogs” are consistently in the top ten or top five of the bite report lists.

the owner even said “All he had to do is take one giant step back,”
How often do police have that luxury? Honestly.. Do they have the time to do that? “We have a bank robber.. ok everyone.. let’s take one GIANT step back.. and perhaps they will not shoot everyone.” No.. Police are ON CALL at ALL TIMES.. why?? because WE demand they are that way. If you are upset that this cop got an itchy trigger and shot a dog he “THOUGHT” was aggressive because he bumped him wanting to be petted.. then THANK YOU COP! Had this guy not broken the law in the first place.. his ‘beloved’ animal would not have been in jeopardize. HE caused this HE broke the law.. HE trespassed. HE did not give enough information about the dog for the officer to be calm and at ease… this is not the Dogs fault.. it is not the cop’s fault.. it is the OWNER’s fault and HE should feel like an ass and like a PET KILLER.. not the cop… cop was doing what he should do.

The “Cop” was sure the fuck NOT doing what he was supposed to do! Just another asshole with a badge and a complex. Should be fired on the spot, and I wouldn’t doubt you are one of this PET KILLER’s friends who are trying to retaliate against the VICTIM.
Taking a step back would have given him a second to think – what you should do instead of COWARDLY blasting a tethered dog with your gun.
If the asshole hadn’t shot and MURDERED the dog it’s doubtful they would have even been charged with a crime. They were getting out of the rain not anything menacing! Sounds like by taking a week now to research this the police are trying to cover their asses. I hope he gets the Lexus Project behind him and sues this department.

No one will ever change your ignorant opinion, which you are entitled to. However…..any living creature can be murdered. Not just humans. Silly human, your life isn’t the only life that matters. If you think dogs are filthy, vile creatures….what does that make humans? Statistically, humans spread more disease and bad germs than any dog ever has. Oh and when you give that officer a raise and more ammo, perhaps he could eliminate more ignorant people too.

If the officer approached and pet the dog, how can he say the dog was attacking him? Yes they shouldnt have been in the back of the truck, but they complied with the officer’s request to vacate the truck and secure the dog. How do you figure it was the owner’s fault the dog died? Most dogs that are very friendly will bump you to resume petting them when you stop.

May 7, 2014 at 3:58 am
Hey Vinnie~ take a hike. A criminal isn’t normally tied to a fence or pole are they? Seriously, think about what you said! Of course a bank robber with free range of mobility and a possible weapon is a potential threat, BUT a dog that the officer thought was friendly enough to walk up to and pet then all of a sudden felt the need to shoot (once the owner couldn’t see) just proves that he has an “Above the law” attitude. I for one do not want that type of person looking out for me…what happens if I get pulled over for something trivial and he “thinks” I became aggressive, does that give him the right to use unnecessary force? I think not. Think before you get all jazzed up and start supporting a person that you don’t know – if you do know that person then maybe this isn’t the place for you to put your opinion…

If the police officer didn’t engage the dog this whole thing wouldn’t have happend. He petted the dog which was a mistake. The dog responded playfully and he shot him to death. He shouldn’t have approached a dog he saw for the first time if he was a person that panics easily. The cop who did this is an complete idiot. Idiots shouldn’t be handle guns.

Wow. You people really hate police officers. Cannot believe the total off the wall disregard for those who fight the good fight… everyday. Whether or not this particular shooting, by this particular officer, was a necessary action, I really do not know, yet the majority of those posting seem to believe whatever they are told. How can anyone really appreciate your hang him high mentality? How do you know what events transpired and why? It’s horrible for an officer to have to use deadly force, it takes a huge mental toll on their lives. Some humans misuse their pets and make them seem aggressive, even when they are not. You should walk in a police officer, social worker or military person’s shoes. Think before you attack …. yes? Grab a serial killer and you see their practice kills were generally animals. Yet when asked to support the death penalty, folks think its inhumane. What of the children who are victimized everyday, all over the world? Maybe you can direct a bit of your passion to speak for them. Truly they are helpless … even more so. From an animal lover, wife, mother of four. AND a survivor of the inhumanity of the true degenerates. Try getting the whole picture, before you beat a police officer down so harshly.

There have been several stories since last summer about police taking the lives of dogs that in no way were threatening. Dogs are part of people’s families!!!
I believe, since officers have to transport dogs and deal with situations involving them daily, officers should be required to take basic courses in animal training and sensitivity because there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of logic or common sense being used. It angers me. We pay taxes for a police force to protects us – not to shoot down this young man’s obidient, friendly dog or for a Dever policeman to stand over a dog that is in shock and dying for 90 minutes, letting the dog die a painful death and threatening to arrest the kind people who wish to assist the dog. Shame on these murderers – grown men who are probably afraid of getting bitten where dog behavior signs show no signs of such behavior.

I agree there are way too many cases like this lately and no penalties given.
I have a service dog and at least I know if a SOB trigger happy cop-and not all of them are-should shoot him at least I can put the feds on him, if I don’t kill him first, for interfering and deliberately killing/maiming a service dog AND the local cops wouldn’t have to worry about their so-called investigation.

This is the second one I’ve heard about where a policeman shot and killed a dog for no good reason! What is it, has the power gone to their heads when they have a gun in their hands! They should never be allowed to have a weapon again! Put them on desk duty the rest of their lives or arrest them, we’re trying to stop all this abuse and the very people who are suppose to protect and serve, yeah right, can’t even trust them either!

May 6, 2014 at 5:50 pm
This was the fourth story I heard of a cop shooting an animal just this week. Don’t they have better things to do than shooting a dog. In Ohio an officer shot and killed 5 kittens in front of small children who were standing no more than 10 to 15 feet away. Now what would have happened if one of those shots ricocheted and hit one of the children. These people who are to protect and serve only seen to be mentally incompetent and need to be relieved of duty

It is getting frightening how police departments all over the country are shooting harmless animals. Wondering if they are “practicing” on animals and what will happen if an unarmed human stands up to a police officer. The US government is giving police departments leftover armament and bullet proof vehicles from the military and Homeland Security bought more bullets than the Army last year. Why? It is scary. I have little dogs who will bark at anyone entering the yard. They are fenced but I wonder if that would stop a police officer from killing them. Destroying our beloved animals is a way to destroy our spirits and break down morale in average people.

I agree with the lady that all cops need to have their guns taken away.
The cops have gotten power happy. And if they think for one minute that they
can get away with something they will. I’m sick and tired of them pushing people around. I feel for the gentleman that lost his dog. I think the cop should do time. After all the dog has rights too. And being shot is not one of them. I hope that the gentleman get the help that he needs to get over this. I will pray for him. God be with you on your journey.

Bonnie
May 6, 2014 at 5:00 pm
I am with you Rick…..I keep hearing this over and over…tied dogs…dogs in fenced in yards..there is no reason for these killings…even saw a video of an so called officer beating his K 9 dog while lifting him up by his leash…then beating him in the stomach..when he would set him down the dog would sit and he would pull him up by the chain and beat him again…there is a cop I would love to run into with a nice club and a chain…this is on video..he will get a slap and paid leave…he should be beaten to death…and so should these cops killing dogs ..the dog was tied…he went over to pat that dog deliberately…the dog moved..brushed him..and it was an excuse to kill the poor animal…punishing the poor man he had in handcuffs…enough already….I would hunt him down as well…and shoot him in various places that wouldn’t kill him..but absolutely leave him to suffer and die….there is NO Need of this…

The real sad thing is that even though there were two eyewitnesses to this senseless and criminal killing, the Police Department is still investigating what happened more than one week after its occurrence. To top it off, the supporters of the criminal officer that did this horrible thing have turned agains the eye witnesses and are now villifying Brandon’s lifestyle, and calling for the boycott of all businesses that support Arzy the victim of the psychopath officers ‘ actions.

I for one am tired of these stories. They shoot first, ask questions later. The dog was tied to the fence. This officer should lose his job and pension, and go to jail. There should be a requirement for all officers to have tasers. How many stories do we have to read about the killing of innocent family pets, or unarmed people. The time has come to put an end to this! I would also suggest that all officers have a hat or shoulder cam, so that the truth always comes out, no witnesses needed!

It seems cops are taking up killing dogs as a pass time and it’s absolutely fucking infuriating.
If we’re cracking down on sickos who get animals off Craiglist to kill and torture and things like that, then we need to look at another problem that is becoming apparent here and that’s the fucking police shooting dogs left and right with no justifiable cause.
There is never a justifiable cause to shoot an animal in the fucking head or do anything to critically wound or kill it.
I’ve yet to see one of these stories where the dog was even being ferocious or aggressive. And that’s really fucked up.
These shitheads need to get a training course to teach them how to tackle dogs or spray them with something non-harmful.
Tax money would go to something good, instead of buying them some new trucks and cars.
It’s sickening how just a while ago when a police force dog got fatally wounded in a shooting (which they should have had the dog-bullet proof vest on, but whatever) and they were so sad and honoring the dog… Yet here we are with another story about them shooting passive dogs and claiming some bullshit self-defense.
I really just don’t understand how their first step is to grab their gun and shoot the dog in the head or something. It’s a dog. There are other ways to deal with it, IF it is actually being aggressive. I’ve seen my dad tackle an angry dog off of his own dog and hold the dog down – GENTLY NO LESS – until the owner could get it.
In this case, WHY COULDN’T HE JUST STEP BACK FROM THE LEASHED DOG? There was literally no reason for using the gun.
Sure not all cops are like this, but it’s becoming more and more common – this abuse of power. And it’s not just on dogs.

Stop labeling all police officers as trigger happy or sick. I am a retired officer and never shot or injured a animal (of any type) even after they bit me. I saved many animals and took them to the emergency clinic and paid for the care out of my own pocket…and would do the same today. The real issue is this person should not be a police office. He has proven himself to be a member of the absolute scumbag club. Any person who would shot a tied up dog (aggressive or not) is a complete a$^%$%^#. He should be fired and brought up on animal cruelty charges. If the State won’t prosecute, let the city hire a lawyer to bring him to justice. People who abuse animals do much worse, this has been proven. Stop the abuse.

I agree that not all Police officers are like this, but in the vast majority of these cases, the department backs up the officer and nothing is done. A few owners have pursued legal cases and compensation in the tens of thousands of dollars has been paid but this is still rare. This Asshole cop doesn’t deserve to wear any uniform or be allowed carry a firearm. He should be sacked and charged, but will it happen? Going on past evidence, I doubt it. It only takes one case like this to bring the police reputation down lower than bankers -This is why I won’t be visiting America again!

These stories are becoming more and more frequent and break my heart to hear that these officers really don’t CARE! They all need to go through training on how to handle a situation with an animal (dog) is involved. They all seem to be trigger happy and make excuses for what they did and there really is NO excuse for what they did. They should be charged with felony animal cruelty and lose their jobs. I have pets of my own and would be totally devastated if something like that happened to any of my pets. This person should sue the officer for what he did and I hope you loses his job and is charged with felony animal cruelty.
