Eighteen year old Mangli Munda of a remote village in eastern India is looking forward to living hap-PAW-ly ever after, now that she’s married her groom, a stray dog named Sheru.
Village elders spared no expense in planning the lavish wedding after a local guru convinced the teen’s family that she was under an evil spell and that marrying a man would only bring bad luck and destruction to both her family and the village.
Their solution, a full-fledged wedding ceremony with a village stray.
“I am marrying a dog because the village elders believe that my evil spell will be passed on to the dog,” she said. “After that is done, the man I will marry will have a long life.”
The belief is that Munda’s misfortunes will now be transferred to the dog. And, since the marriage isn’t legally binding, she’s now free to find a human man to marry.
As for Sheru, his life is looking brighter, too. Rather than living off the village streets as a stray, he will now become a treasured family pet.
