When Michigan State Troopers Casey Allison and Joel Kuhn responded to a call of an injured dog on Interstate 96, they immediately sprung into action.
When they arrived at the scene, they found a female Pit Bull, frightened, panicked, and in desperate need of medical care. The troopers rushed her to an after-hours emergency veterinary center in an attempt to save her life.
Though the Animal Urgent and Critical Care Center they brought her to had a stretcher waiting for her arrival, the frightened dog felt more at ease in the arms of Trooper Allison who carried her inside.
A local organization, 4 Paws 1 Heart, agreed to pay for the medical care she needed.
“This beautiful girl whom we are calling “Joy” is an example of strength, beauty, and survival.” said Gina DeLuca, vice president 4 Paws 1 Heart.
My Fox Philly reported
Shortly after Joy arrived at “4 Paws 1 Heart,” a radiography was taken of her rear legs because she was having a hard time walking, especially on her right rear leg. The radiograph revealed that Joy had 3 fractures in her pelvis, a fracture in her fibula bone, and 2 torn ACL ligaments. Her injuries are treatable and her pain is manageable, but she does need to see an orthopedic specialist, which will cost over $5,000. The radiograph also discovered that while the canine was on the streets she ate the top of a light bulb, which will require exploratory surgery. “4 Paws 1 Heart” says that they are willing to do whatever it takes to make Joy healthy; however, they need help with medical costs.
At a time when we read reports of dogs, particularly Pit Bulls, being both misunderstood and mishandled by people in a position to help them, Troopers Allison and Kuhn put prejudice aside and treated her like a living being that desperately needed their help.
“These officers deserve credit for having compassion. Their reaction to this individual situation was an example of what we expect and how a life, every life, should be treated without prejudice of breed. They treated this Pit Bull with compassion, care, and delicacy,” said DeLuca.
Joy has left the animal hospital and is now recovering in foster care until she’s ready to find a forever home.
