A Connecticut woman was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after not treating her dog’s flea infestation, thereby allowing the dog to needlessly suffer.
After receiving an anonymous complaint of dogs suffering from untreated flea infestations as well as a lack of running water, animal control officers visited the home of Michelle Szewczyk.
On August 4, police found an unlicensed 7-year old German Shepherd suffering from excessive fleas and a serious ear infection. While they issued a citation for the infraction, they gave Szewczyk an opportunity to take her dog to a veterinarian for vaccinations, flea prevention, and medical treatment.
Over the next several weeks, animal control officers followed up with Szewczyk, but 2 months later, she still had not sought treatment for her dog and allowed him to suffer.
This week, New Britain Police seized Szewczyk’s German Shepherd, provided the dog with veterinary care, and obtained an arrest warrant charging the 40-year old woman with animal cruelty.
The dog will remain in the custody of the New Britain Police Department until the case is closed.
