A Dallas healthcare worker has tested positive for the Ebola virus, becoming the first person to contract the disease from within the United States.
While the nurse was hospitalized and placed under quarantine, she alerted officials to a dog in her home.
Dallas Mayor, Mike Rawlings, has announced that the dog will be kept safe and will not be euthanized. Concerns were raised by the public immediately after the discovery of her dog, in hopes that he or she would not face the same fate met by Excalibur, the dog of an infected healthcare worker in Spain that was euthanized by the Spanish government last week.
“This was a new twist,” Rawlings said. “The dog’s very important to the patient and we want it to be safe.”
For now, the dog remains at home in the nurse’s Dallas apartment. Members of the SPCA are monitoring and caring for the dog.
