The week leading up to and just after halloween is one of the busiest times of year for the Pet Poison Hotline, and the 2nd most common holiday for pets to get lost (after July 4th).
Here’s what you need to know to keep your dogs and cats safe this Halloween:

This is why I am so proud both my past & present companions were taught the “leave it” command. I test, by doing things like accidentally dropping a piece of raw steak while cooking. My Wody will sit amid a puddle of drool, slobbers hanging from mouth to floor, but he never touches without the “OK” command! It is my strictest rule. In an emergency, I shout “leave it” he freezes. Even if in an incorrect use I know he would stop. It would take a minute for him to try & figure out what he is to leave, & by then I would have him firmly in my grasp. Example: escaped & going towards a street (even birds etc. trained he cannot lunge towards). When giving his much anticipated nightly treat, once in awhile he will jump & grab. I will remove right from his mouth (yes, he allows it). He then has to sit & “leave it” for two minutes. He then is more careful taking treats for quite awhile. I know there is always that one-in-a-million. However, having a well trained dog who is NEVER allowed to take ANYTHING other than from his (humongous) toy-box, reduces his chance of accidental ingestion to near zero. OH! And only positive reinforcement, please!
