On Monday, New York Police Officers Mezzoiuso and Morinia-Blocker  responded to radio call of a “vicious dog” wandering on the Grand Central Parkway near the Long Island Expressway exit in Queens. When they arrived, the officers found a pit bull mix lying motionless in the center lane of the busy parkway.

As she cautiously approached the dog, Officer Mezzoiuso immediately realized he was not at all vicious, but was, instead, seriously injured and very frightened.

She quickly picked up the sweet, injured dog and carried him to safety on the side of the parkway. Officers Mezzoiuso and Morinia-Blocker then transported the dog in their cruiser to an ASPCA office located in Queens. ASPCA workers then transported the dog to an ASPCA animal hospital in Manhattan where he could be treated by a veterinarian.

The NYPD Tweeted about the rescue:

And, the officer’s kindness and compassion didn’t end there! A few days later, the pair visited the dog at the ASPCA animal hospital to check on his recovery. The dog appeared to have been struck by a car and suffered a broken leg, but is expected to make a full recovery!

Aww! So sweet! We need more stories about cops like this in the news, and less cops that shoot dogs that aren’t threats
