When Santa Fe Animal Control found Patrick along the side of the street, he was covered it cuts, punctures, and scratches. But, he wasn’t alone. Patrick was standing guard over another dog, presumably his littermate, who had been struck and killed by a car.
Animal Control officers believe Patrick suffered from multiple coyote attacks while protecting his brother, that despite being brutally attacked by other animals, he refused to leave his friend’s side.
Santa Fe Animal Shelter Director of Growth Evelyn Viechec said, “We aren’t sure how long he was standing there with his buddy, but we thought it was pretty sad.”
Heartbreaking indeed, Patrick endured unimaginable pain, both mentally and physically, while protecting his deceased friend’s body.
Now, in the loving hands of veterinarians, Patrick is getting the help he needs to recover. He had surgery on Saturday to repair his deep wounds and by Sunday was able to eat soft foods.
If all goes well, Patrick will be available for adoption in just a few weeks, after he’s healed.
One very lucky family will welcome a very special, loyal boy into their home.
