Description
The Newfoundland, also called as Newfie, is a well-liked breed of strong, massive dog that originated in Canada. It belongs to the Working breed family which is remarkable for their excellent guarding and rescuing skills. Newfies is among the multi-purpose breeds that have been bred to become rescue dogs. Their flat double coat varies from straight to wavy. It is water-resistant, coarse in the outer part, and soft underneath. It comes in numerous colors such as black, black with white highlights, black with blue markings, white with black patterns, gray, and brown.
Height and Weight
The male members of the Newfoundland breed normally stand a height of 28 in at the withers, and weigh 130 to 150 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, are quite smaller. Their height is usually about 26 in, and their weight is commonly 100 to 120 lbs.
Temperament
Newfies, in general, are calm, sweet, and peaceable. They are generous, courageous, and intelligent. They also tend to be sociable, mild with guests, and obedient with their masters. The breed is very loyal, devoted, and trustworthy. They move slow, and rarely bark. Newfies are protective and brave. The breed usually tends to be friendly with children, visitors, and other animals. Newfies are playful, patient, and loving with kids. They love the outdoors, but also enjoy being with their family owners.
Grooming
Newfies need a lot of regular cleanups. They tend to drool and shed heavily. Dry shampooing your Newfie pets and brushing them on a regular basis is highly recommended. Coat care needs to be stepped up during spring and fall seasons.
Health Concerns
Members of the Newfoundland breed are extremely sensitive to hot climates. They are relatively short-lived as they only have an average lifespan of 8 to 10 years. Like any other canine, the breed is also prone to quite a few health issues. Some of these include chronic heart diseases, gastric torsion, joint and bone diseases, hip dysplasia, cancer, and cataracts.
Best Environment
Newfies rarely thrive in hot climates. Because of their large size, the breed is not suited for apartment-living. A huge home with a large yard, along with a household with no frail members or small children is perfect for them. Access to pond or lake is a big plus. In addition, Newfies have minimal exercise needs. Daily walks is advisable. Swimming and fishing trips could be a special treat for these active dogs.
