Firefighters put their lives on the line for other people every single day. Now, two Johnston City, Illinois firemen are being praised for saving the life of a dog trapped in a house fire.

When a Johnston City home caught fire on Friday, the family, thankfully was not home. Their dog, a pit bull mix named Titan, however, was trapped inside.

Once the blaze, which was somehow ignited in the kitchen, was put out, firefighters emerged carrying 10-month old Titan. The dog was not breathing and had a very weak pulse.

Firefighters Mike Teeling and Tyler Morgan spent more than half an hour trying to revive the dog using a specially designed oxygen mask. Eventually, with a lot of love, care, and effort, Titan regained consciousness.

“I’m an animal lover myself, dogs cats, as well as people in our community” Firefighter Mike Teeling explained to KFVS, “So we try to do the best we can do, and our training helps us to do that.”

“Usually in a house fire, when we get there the dogs and the people have already gotten out” Tyler Morgan added, “We’ve had to do a lot of recoveries of animals after the dogs have passed.”

A few days later, Titan has a bit of a cough, but is expected to make a full recovery.

The oxygen mask used to save Titan’s life was just recently donated to the department by East Side Grooming Shop of Minonk.

Had it not been for the generous donation by East Side Grooming, Titan would very likely not be alive today. While most emergency service vehicles are equipped with oxygen masks for humans, very few have appropriate masks for pets.
