Temperament
Lion Dogs, in general, are calm, gentle, and obedient pets, though can be rather ferocious when hunting. They are loyal and good-natured, but may not get along very well with small children because of their tendency to play a little too roughly with them. Lion Dogs are known to be intelligent and skillful. They are also very protective, brave and watchful. To keep them from becoming aloof with strangers, proper socialization needs to be done. Because of their great stamina, they should be given vigorous mental and physical activities. Otherwise, the breed would become high strung, and unmanageable. in addition, Lion Dogs tend to react best to firm but calm, and consistent training approach.
Grooming
Rhodesian Ridgebacks are generally very easy to groom. Owners only have to get rid of their dead hairs using a brush or a damp cloth. Because they are usually sensitive to insecticides, tropical treatments need to be avoided in their eliminating fleas and ticks. The breed is an average shedder.
Health Concerns
Some of the common health problems known to plague the Ridgeback breed are bloat, cancer, cataracts, thyroid problems, and deafness. A rare congenital health issue called the dermoid sinus is also associated with the breed. Nevertheless, with proper care, diet, and exercise, Ridgebacks can live for as long as 10 to 13 years.
Best Environment
Despite their large size, Rhodesian Ridgebacks can do well in living at home. Because of their chasing and hunting instincts, a medium-sized yard is necessary. Nonetheless, the breed is a hardy kind. Whether it’s rain or shine, or perhaps, warm or cold, members of the Rhodesian Ridgeback breed can thrive. In addition, regular exercise is very important for this breed. Because of their great energy reserves, Ridgebacks have to be able to channel their zest for life through vigorous play, hunting expedition, or off-leash games.
