Description
The Keeshond, also called as Kees or the Wolfspitz, is a well-liked breed of compact, little dog that originated in Germany and Holland. It belongs to the Non-sporting breed family which is notable for their distinct built, unique personality, and endearing appearance. Kees have been bred to become barge dogs. Their straight, long double coat is harsh in the outside and downy underneath. Its color is usually a combination of gray, as well as black and cream with a very light gray or cream under-coat.
Height and Weight
Both the male and female members of the Keeshond breed normally stand a height of 17 to 18 in at the withers. Males usually weigh about 45 lbs, while bitches typically weigh approximately 35 lbs.
Temperament
Keeshonds, in general, are very keen, active, and outgoing dogs. They are intelligent, and can be easily trained to do some tricks. The breed is known to be friendly and affectionate. They tend to love everyone, and they usually make excellent companions for children. Keeshonds love to be part of family activities, and they tend to relate well with other animals. To keep them from becoming timid or reserved, proper socialization must be done. Because the breed has an extraordinary gift in terms of warning of danger, they make excellent watchdogs. They like to bark so they must be trained properly by their owners. Handlers also have to be firm but gentle with their approach to prevent the Keeshonds from developing behavior issues.
Grooming
Kees are quite easy to groom. Brushing their long coat every day is important. Owners are advised to initially brush with their grain, lift the hair using the comb, against the grain, and then lay it back in place. Kees have to be bathed and dry shampooed only when needed. The breed’s dense undercoat tends to shed heavily a couple of times a year.
Health Concerns
Although Keeshonds are generally considered to be a healthy breed, they are still prone to quite a few health complications. These include hip dysplasia, epilepsy, luxating patellas, Cushing’s disease, hypothyroidism, primary hyperparathyroidism, and the Von Willebrand’s disease. Kees have an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years.
Best Environment
Members of the Keeshond breed generally crave for human companionship. They like to be very close to the owners, and usually can thrive as kenneled canines. With sufficient exercise, the breed can succeed in apartment-living. Because of their very dense double coat, they are typically intolerable with hot, humid temperatures. In terms of exercise, owners have to take the Kees on a daily walk. To make the breed happy, letting them perform a good run in a safe, open area every day is highly recommended.
