Description

The Afghan Hound, also known as Tazi, is a well-liked breed of tall, slender dog that originated in Afghanistan. It belongs to the Hound breed family which is notable for their excellent hunting skills. Afghan Hounds have been bred to become hunting dogs and sight-hounds. Their long, silky coat usually comes in all colors; oftentimes in sand-color with a darker face along with ear fringes.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the Afghan Hound normally stand a height of 25 to 27 in, and weigh 50 to 60 lbs.

Temperament

Afghanhound1

Afghan Hounds, in general, are courageous and spirited dogs. They are known to be dignified and sensitive, with low levels of dominance. The breed is loyal, very sweet, and affectionate. They can be rather aloof, so socialization is highly encouraged. Owners have to train them kindly and calmly, but in a firm manner. Because Afghan Hounds are generally noble and majestic, they are considered to be the “King of Dogs”. Although the breed tends to be suspicious of strangers, they are not hostile. They are best suited for older children who know very well how to become the breed’s gentle pack leader. Afghan Hounds, in addition, can be rather difficult to housebreak. They also have the tendency to become timid and high-strung if inadequate physical and mental exercises were given.

Grooming

Afghan Hounds generally require a lot of grooming care. They need to be bathed twice a month, and their silky coats have to be conditioned thoroughly. Combing out their hair when wet is very important. Blow drying is also highly recommended. Professional grooming is advisable for new owners.

Health Concerns

Members of the Afghan Hound breed are normally healthy. As a matter of fact, they tend to live longer than other breeds. They have an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years. Nevertheless, like any other canine, they are also prone to a few health complications. These include allergies, sensitivity to anesthesia, and cancers.

Best Environment

With sufficient exercise, Afghan Hounds can do well in apartment-living. They are relatively active indoors, and a secure yard could be ideal for them. The breed can live either inside or outside the house, but they are usually happier to sleep indoors. Taking the Afghan Hound dog on a long walk or jog every day is very necessary. Letting them run freely in an open yet securely, fenced area would also be great for the breed.
