Description
The Portuguese Water Dog, also called Portie, is a popular breed of medium-sized, muscular dog that originated in Portugal. It belongs to the Working breed family which is remarkable for their guarding and water-rescuing skills. Porties have been bred to become reliable companions. Their thick single coat could either be curly or wavy. Its colors usually include white, black, shades of brown, parti-colors of white along with dark spots, brown or black with white markings, gray, and silver fox.
Height and Weight
The male members of the Portuguese Water Dog normally stand a height of 20 to 22 in at the withers, and weigh 42 to 55 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, commonly have a height of 17 to 20 in, and a weight of 35 to 49 lbs.
Temperament
Porties, in general, are lively, amusing, and animated dogs. They are spirited and very fun to be around. The breed is loyal, and very affectionate with their family owners. They are known to be excellent with children, and can relate well with other dogs and animals. Porties require a lot of exercise as they possess great stamina. They are pleasant, even-tempered, attentive, and brave. The breed is highly intelligent and easy to train. They are typically keen to work, and very quick to learn. Porties require handlers who are confident, and can be consistent with discipline; someone who can be firm yet gentle in communicating with the Portie pet. The breed is faithful, usually eager to please, and obedient. They have an extraordinary sense of smell, and they make excellent watchdogs. Porties are suitable for numerous dog sports and agility skill trials.
Grooming
To keep the Portie dogs free from coat tangles, owners are advised to brush them every day or once in every two days. Trimming and clipping can be done once a month, depending on the way you want the pet to look like. Checking for burrs should also be made after the dog has returned from off-leash play.
Health Concerns
Members of the Portuguese Water Dog are generally long-lived. Nonetheless, there are still a few health conditions associated with the breed. These complications include chronic heart diseases, glycogen storage, hip dysplasia, and progressive retinal atrophy. With proper diet and exercise, Porties can live for as long as 10 to 14 years.
Best Environment
Porties are generally tolerant with both cold and hot weather. They are best suited to live in an orderly space with constant human interaction. Access to a yard is advisable to meet their physical and mental exercise requirements. In terms of exercise, the breed requires daily physical activities which may include brisk walking, swimming, action-packed yard games, or vigorous outdoor excursion.
