The Irish Wolfhound is a widely held breed of gigantic dog that originated in Ireland. It belongs to the Hound breed family which is remarkable for their incomparable hunting skills boosted by their scenting powers and exceptional gift of stamina. Irish Wolfhounds have been bred to become reliable family companions, and wolf-hunting dogs. They are among the tallest breeds of dogs as it reaches the size of a small pony. Their shaggy coat is wiry and rough. Its colors typically come in brindle, gray, red, pure white, black, and fawn.
Height and Weight
Both the male and female members of the Irish Wolfhound breed commonly stand a height of 28 to 35 in at the withers, and weigh 90 to 150 lbs. More often than not, this particular hound breed can reach up to a 7-foot height when standing on its hind legs.
Temperament
Irish Wolfhounds, in general, are kind, patient, and sweet-tempered dogs. They are highly intelligent, and trustworthy with children. The breed is also known to be willing and very eager to please. Irish Wolfhounds are thoughtful and unconditionally loyal to their family owners. In fact, they tend to greet almost everyone as a friend. This makes them, however, unsuitable to become good watchdogs. Because of its giant size, the breed can become really clumsy, and very slow to mature both physically and mentally. In addition, Irish Wolfhounds are quite easy to train. They respond well to firm yet calm, and consistent leadership. The breed also gets along well with other canine pets and other animals.
Grooming
Members of the Irish Wolfhound breed commonly require average coat care attention. They are medium shedders. Combing needs to be done once a week. Stripping of dead hairs, nonetheless, has to be carried out a couple of times a year. For a neather outcome, trimming their wiry coat is also necessary.
Health Concerns
Despite the breed’s massive size, they are often short-lived. As a matter of fact, Irish Wolfhounds only have an average lifespan of 5 to 7 years. Best Environment
Irish Wolfhounds thrive well in chilly environments, but usually do poorly in areas with warm climates. These gigantic dogs need an equally spacious place to call home. This makes apartment-living somewhat a terrible idea. Irish Wolfhounds love companionship so they need to be treated as part of the family. They are oftentimes unhappy when locked up in a kennel. In addition, owners are encouraged to provide their sighthound pet with soft beddings to keep the breed from developing calluses. Daily walks would be great for them.
