A young puppy is lucky to be alive after he was stuffed into a backpack and abandoned in the bed of a random pickup truck.
Thankfully, the truck his abusers randomly chose belonged to an experienced dog lover who knew just what to do.
Jerry Murray, a retired U.S. Air Force veteran, had just gotten off work in Tampa, Florida and made the 35-minute drive to his home in Brandon.
When he exited his truck and reached into the passenger side door for his briefcase, Murray heard a noise coming from the bed of his truck. That’s when he looked up and met eyes with a tiny puppy stuffed inside a backpack that had been left there.
“He’s in there, he’s panting, and I see him and I’m like ‘what am I going to do?’” Murray told WFLA.
The puppy, now named Zeus, was zipped into a New York Yankees backpack with only his head poking out. The backpack was filled with shredded newspaper.
“I gave him some water, gave him some food and let him relax a little bit, ’cause I’m sure he was traumatized from the ride,” he said.
The veteran, who already has three dogs of his own, could not keep the puppy. So after several phone calls, his wife found the Second Chance Friends Rescue Group in nearby Plant City.
Once Zeus is medically cleared and neutered, he’ll be available for adoption through Second Chance Friends.
Murray says the pup is going to make someone very happy, adding, “He’s a very sweet dog. Didn’t make very much noise and if you love him, he’ll love you.”
