Description
The Gordon Setter is a well-liked breed of slender, robust dog that originated in Scotland. It belongs to the sporting breed family which is noteworthy for their being amiable and well-rounded companions. Gordon Setters have been bred to hunt game birds. Their soft and shiny coat may either come as straight or slightly wavy. Its coat color is predominantly black enhanced with tan markings that vary from rich chestnut to mahogany shades. Some members have a tiny white patch on the chest.
Height and Weight
The male members of the Gordon Setter normally stand a height of 24 to 27 in at the withers, and weigh 55 to 80 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, commonly have a height of 23 to 26 in, and a weight of 45 to 70 lbs.
Temperament
Gordon Setters, in general, are very loyal, polite, and obedient dogs. They are sweet-tempered, cheerful, and devoted pets; basically making them fun companions. The breed relates well with children, though can be rather distant around strangers. These dogs are also usually good with other animals. Gordon Setters are affectionate, intelligent, and eager to please their family owners. They are brave and are known to be skilled hunters. To keep the breed from becoming high-strung, handlers have to provide them with plenty of exercise. Additionally, Gordon Setters require good leadership and proper socialization to make them well-balanced pets.
Grooming
Members of the Gordon Setter breed are typically easy to groom. Combing and brushing their hair on a regular basis is all that’s needed to keep their coat in good condition. Extra care may be done by checking their fur for burrs or tangles. Hair-trimming and nail-clipping would also be advisable. This breed is considered to be an average shedder.
Health Concerns
Gordon Setters are basically healthy. However, there are a few health complications known to plague the breed. These include hip dysplasia, eye problems, and bloat. With proper care, nutrition, and exercise, Gordon Setters can live for as long as 10 to 12 years.
Best Environment
Gordon Setter pets are usually not suited for apartment-living. They are fairly inactive indoors, and are likely to do best with a large, securely fenced yard, at the very least. Because of their strong hunting instincts, the breed is prone to roam and run freely. When it comes to exercise, daily long walks are highly recommended.
