When a Santa Rosa, California woman was forced to flee her home to escape from wildfires ravaging the area, she refused to leave her dog behind – no matter what it took.

Duffel Bag

Natasha Wallace, a student at Santa Rosa Junior College, told KTXL she was on her way home from studying at around 2 a.m. when she saw the flames in the distance. She knew right away that she needed to get home to her pit bull, Bentley, and get him out of danger.

Wallace rushed home and loaded Bentley into her car, but the pair quickly became trapped in traffic, unable to escape ahead of the flames rushing toward them.

She and Bentley ran back home to grab her bicycle. A mode of transportation that could easily bypass stopped traffic, but that would make traveling with a 70-pound dog a challenge.

So, she grabbed a duffel bag and told Bentley to get in.

“I grabbed my dog and I told him, ‘Hey man, this is serious, you need to just sit in the bag.’ … And he, he hopped right in.”

With her dog slung over her shoulders, Wallace biked for several miles until a man in a pickup truck pulled over and offered them both a ride to safety.

Despite losing her home to the fire, Wallace is happy that Bentley, her “ride or die…literally,” is safely by her side.
