Darwin’s Natural Pet Products has recalled select lots of two varieties of their ZooLogics meals for dogs due to possible contamination with Salmonella.
In a letter from their founder, Darwin’s Natural Pet Products notified customers of a recall involving two varieties of their ZooLogics Meals for Dogs following one pet illness and laboratory testing which revealed the presence of the Salmonella bacteria.
The recalled products include:
• ZooLogics Chicken and Vegetable Meals for Dogs (manufactured 11/2/17)
• ZooLogics Duck and Vegetable Meals for Dogs (manufactured 11/16/17)
In a letter, Darwin’s founder, Gary Tashjian said,
We believe most of this product has already been consumed, for the most part without incident, as most dogs’ and cats’ digestive systems are able to process pathogens such as Salmonella without harm (we are aware of a single case of a pet being affected, which involved a dog who was already ill with other conditions).
Having said that, we take this situation very seriously. Our number one priority is providing your pet with meals that you can feel confident are healthy and safe. I’d like to take this opportunity to give you some background on how we approach the issue of pet food safety.
The FDA warns that Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.
Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.
Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
