Just months after the February shooting that claimed 17 lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, students will begin the new school year with a new source of comfort on campus – an adorably fluffy full-time therapy dog.

Meryl Berdugo told NBC6 she was so touched by how her own therapy dog helped comfort students following the tragic shooting that she began a campaign to get a full-time therapy dog for the Parkland, Florida school.

That campaign led Utahbernedoodles to gift ‘River’, a Bernedoodle puppy soon to become Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s newest employee. River will live and come to school every day with Diana Haneski, the MSD librarian that helped shelter 50 students from harms way during the attack.

“River’s gonna help in the future with a lot of struggles and trouble, and I’m trying to get myself ready to go back, so this is definitely going to help me,” Haneski said.

River will receive free therapy dog training, pet insurance, and the royal treatment in exchange for doing what dogs do best – providing unconditional love, comfort, and companionship to those that need it.
