Two dogs died and a third is being treated for heat exhaustion after a Michigan woman left all three locked inside a parked car and disappeared into a casino for several hours.
Sherill Langford, 49, is charged with three felony counts of torturing or killing an animal, 3 misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty, and one charge of lying to police after she left her 3 dogs in a parked car while she spent several hours inside the Four Winds Casino in Dowagiac, Michigan over the weekend.
Tribal Police responded to the vehicle after someone notified casino security about the distressed dogs. By the time help arrived, it was too late for two of the pups. The third dog was rushed to a veterinarian where he’s being treated for heat exhaustion and dehydration. He is expected to make a complete recovery.
Langford told police that she’d been outside several times to check on her dogs and that they seemed fine. But, police say she left them unattended for many hours, while temperatures inside the vehicle reached into the triple digits.
Langford bonded out of the Cass County Jail. She’ll be arraigned on three felony and four misdemeanor charges on April 17. It has not yet been determined whether Langford will be allowed to keep the surviving dog.
Even on a relatively mild day, your car can turn into an oven with frightening speed… a speed often underestimated by pet parents. In the time it takes to run a quick errand, a dog left alone in a parked car can suffer irreparable consequences, even death.
You wouldn’t dream of leaving your best furry friend in an oven. Leaving them in a parked car is no different. Please, think twice before bringing your dog along and continue warning other pet parents of the dangers.
