Going Green: Earth-Friendly Ideas for Dog Owners

Having a dog means taking on some added responsibility for keeping the earth in good shape. You can start by supporting companies who utilize eco-friendly manufacturing processes and make sustainable choices for your pets, starting with dog supplies that are earth-friendly.

Earth-Friendly

Bamboo Products

Hypoallergenic and naturally pest-resilient, bamboo can be easily adapted to grow in nearly any climate. Since it’s fast-growing (maturing in just 5-7 years) and does not require the use of pesticides to thrive, plantations can be kept organic and replanted each year to replenish stocks with minimum effort. As an added bonus, a bamboo grove releases 35 percent more oxygen into the atmosphere than a similarly-sized stand of trees.

The fact that bamboo is naturally resistant to bacteria makes it a perfect choice for dog products. Luckily, you can now find almost anything you need for your dog made from bamboo. Bamboo dog collars are soft, durable, and naturally mildew and bacteria resistant – perfect for the dog that loves to enjoy the earth as well as preserve it!

Hemp Products

Hemp sometimes gets a bad rap, but the truth is, it’s a very environmentally friendly material. Not only does the hemp plant survive in nearly any climate, but one acre of hemp can produce as much fiber as 2-3 acres of cotton. Not only that, the fast-growing plant is ready to harvest in only four months.

Since hemp is a durable, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, and mildew-free fiber that is nearly twice as strong as cotton, it’s the perfect material to make toys. The best part? Since it’s 100% biodegradable, the remains of any shredded hemp toys or collars act to replenish soil. This makes hemp toys very popular as dog toys (just remember to monitor your pets while they’re playing with any toy).

Earth-Friendly

Cork Products

Did you know cork comes from cork trees? Cork is an all-natural material that is obtained through an environmentally friendly harvesting process, which means that the bark from cork trees is hand-harvested every nine years rather than cutting the trees down. Since cork trees can live up to 300 years, it means they can be harvested about 35 times during their lifespan. Even the scraps are harvested for use.

Cork dog collars and other dog products are amazingly soft and very stylish in this day of eco-friendly dog products.

Recycled Bicycle Tubing

Cycle Dog uses the tubing of recycled bicycle tires to make their very durable, mold-resistant collars, leashes, and toys that are naturally soft and great for those who enjoy time outdoors with their dogs. These products hold up to punishing conditions and last for years. Cycle Dog even includes a bottle opener on their collars for those lazy days at the lake!

Earth-Friendly

Recycled Water Bottles

Last year, Worldwise brand products prevented over 100,000,000 plastic bottles from ever reaching landfills thanks to their creation of a recycled fiberfill blend called EcoRest®. This super soft, naturally mold-resistant filling makes a dog bed feel like a soft cloud. Your dogs will love their line of TrustyPup beds – they’re affordable, eco-friendly beds that do the world a lot of good.

I love how you talked about how recycled bike tubing is used to make very durable collars. My husband and I are getting a dog and I want to maintain our carbon footprint as much as we can. We will keep these tips in mind when searching for a professional to sell us a recycled dog collar.
