Description

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog, also referred to as Coban Kopegi or Karabas, is an accepted breed of large, powerful livestock dog that originated in Asia Minor. It belongs to the working breed family which is admired for their excellent abilities to accomplish jobs such as guarding properties, sled-pulling, or water-rescuing. Anatolian Shepherd Dogs have been bred to become flock guardians. Their double coat could either be short or rough. The breed usually comes in all colors and markings.

Height and Weight

The male members of the Anatolian Shepherd Dog breed normally stand a height of 28 to 30 in at the withers, and weigh 100 to 150 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, are quite smaller with a height of about 26 to 28 in, and a weight of 90 to 130 lbs.

Temperament

Anatolian Shepherd Dog

Anatolian Shepherd Dogs, in general, are very loyal, alert, and highly intelligent dogs. They are excellent flock guardians that have extraordinary sense of sight and hearing. The breed also has a great gift of speed and stamina. Anatolian Shepherd Dogs need a handler who can display a natural air of authority over them. They need someone who can be firm yet gentle in their leadership approach. The breed is also considered to be calm, independent, and brave, though not aggressive. They tend to bark and are very watchful, possessive, and protective. Anatolians are affectionate, though can be extremely suspicious with strangers. Lack of proper leadership can make them become very dominant, demanding, and stubborn.

Grooming

Anatolians are very easy to groom. They only need to be brushed and bathed on an occasional basis. Nonetheless, the breed is considered to be a seasonal, heavy shedder.

Health Concerns

Members of the Anatolian Shepherd Dog breed are generally susceptible to hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, and entropion. The breed has also been observed to be very sensitive to anesthesia. Nevertheless, with proper attention, diet, and exercise, Anatolian pets can live for as long as 12 to 15 years.

Best Environment

Anatolians are capable of thriving well in living outdoors as they are still presently utilized as livestock guardians. The breed can adjust to indoor life so long as they get to receive ample exercise. Because of their tremendous stamina and energy, Anatolians require a spacious yard of their own. They are also not recommended for apartment-living.
