A Washington man was arrested on Sunday after leading state troopers on a 109 miles-an-hour high-speed chase—with his dog behind the wheel of the car.

High-Speed Chase

On Sunday, several witnesses called 911 to report a vehicle driven erratically and at very high speeds.

When troopers located the vehicle, it had already struck two vehicles in two separate incidents, failing to stop both times. The vehicle continued leading police on a pursuit at more than 100 miles per hour.

At one point, police attempted to corner the suspect’s car. That’s when they discovered the Lakewood, Washington man’s pit bull in the driver’s seat.

Eventually, troopers used spike strips to stop the vehicle. While arresting the impaired car owner, he informed police he was trying to teach his dog to drive.

“I wish I could make this up,” Trooper Heather Axtman told CNN. “I’ve been a trooper for almost 12 years and wow, I’ve never heard this excuse. I’ve been in a lot of high-speed chases, I’ve stopped a lot of cars, and never have I gotten an excuse that they were teaching their dog how to drive.”

The 51-year-old dog owner faces several charges, including DUI, reckless endangerment, hit-and-run, and felony eluding arrest. Miraculously, no one was injured during the incident.

The dog, who Axtman described as “a very sweet girl,” was taken to an animal shelter after her owner was arrested.

In our current normal this made me laugh. Although I would hope there would not be more examples of what put others in harm’s way with this example of poor judgement.
