Despite thousands of dog-friendly accommodations and services that offer safe transportation for pets, a man moving across the country chose to transport his dogs inside a vehicle that was on top of a flatbed trailer being towed behind a large moving truck.
On August 10, Animal Control Officer Emily Higgins was dispatched to the Quality Inn in East Haven, Connecticut for a report of a deceased animal. When she arrived, she discovered a deceased Lab mix in the back seat of a vehicle.
The vehicle was on a flatbed trailer being towed behind a large moving truck parked outside the hotel. The owner of the dog, identified as Raymond Atwood, 71, told Officer Higgins that he was in the process of moving across the country from Florida to New Hampshire. When he stopped in Connecticut for the night, he chose to leave the dog in the car rather than stay at a hotel that would allow his dog inside. Atwood admitted that when he woke up, he discovered that the dog was dead.
Atwood was arrested, charged with animal cruelty, and released at the scene. The man’s second dog, who survived the night, was surrendered to the Town of East Haven.
Atwood is scheduled to appear in a New Haven court on October 5.
