An 8-year old Boston Terrier is being hailed a hero after repeatedly breaking into his human baby sister’s nursery and alerting her parents that something was wrong.
On Tuesday night, Jeff and Kelly Dowling put their 9-month old daughter to sleep in her nursery. Moments later, Henry, the couple’s 8-year old Boston Terrier, began acting strangely.
“He was head-butting the door open and going into her room and standing there,” Kelly Dowling told “Good Morning America.” “And every time I shooed him away, he would go back in as soon as my back was turned.”
After Henry broke into the nursery several times, the Dowlings went into the nursery to investigate what had him so intent on being in the room with the baby. That’s when they discovered their infant daughter, who’d been fighting a cold, had stopped breathing.
“She wasn’t clearing her airway,” Dowling said. “She started to turn blue and go rigid and she just really couldn’t she couldn’t get air, couldn’t get any oxygen.”
The couple rushed her to a local hospital where doctors helped to clear her airway. Without Henry’s repeated efforts to bring attention to the baby, she may well have not survived.
“I don’t know what would have happened if he hadn’t woken her. We don’t deserve dogs,” Dowling tweeted.
When the family returned home, they gave Henry lots of extra love and have promised their hero pup a big steak in his future.
