Barking is a form of communication dogs use, which in different situations can imply a variety of things. All dogs bark from time to time. Some breeds bark the most, and others bark less. If you prefer quiet dogs, this list may be a perfect match for you.

Shar Pei

Breed #1: Shar-Pei

Shar-Pei is the perfect breed if you prefer quiet ones, as they rarely bark unless they need to alert you of threats. The Chinese Shar-Peis are zen-like dogs. Also, being naturally clean, they require little grooming.

Newfoundland

Breed #2: Newfoundland

Newfoundland is a generally quiet, large specimen that does its best in spacious homes. They might be perfect for you if you have kids since they tend to do well with children. Newfoundland dogs aren’t known for barking a lot.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

Breed #3: Rhodesian Ridgeback

This African breed was bred to hunt and guard its territory. They are devoted guardians of their loved ones. The Rhodesian Ridgeback might bark when they are bored or notify you of danger, but they are often praised for their lack of barking.

Great Dane

Breed #4: Great Dane

Despite their size, Great Danes are among the quietest dogs. Their breed is considered a “gentle giant”, barking only for good reasons. When it does bark, it does it loudly and deeply, but this isn’t very often.

Whippet

Breed #5: Whippet

Whippets aren’t very good watchdogs as they rarely bark and are friendly to everyone they meet. They are quiet and calm dogs, but training them must be consistent since they can be stubborn and easily distracted. They are an excellent option for those who want a peaceful environment.

Japanese Chin

Breed #6: Japanese Chin

The perfect indoor companion, Japanese Chins have a generally quiet nature. Often described as being “cat-like,” they are best suited for adult or elderly owners who can match their calm demeanor. When they lack attention or are left alone, they can get anxious and bark.

Basenji

Breed #7: Basenji

The Basenji is known as the “barkless dog.”

Because their larynx is shaped differently compared to other breeds, they can’t emit the powerful sound blast of a typical bark. They communicate by yodeling, howling, screaming, and making growling sounds similar to wolves or coyotes.

While there is no assurance that a particular breed will not cause barking problems, proper training can guarantee an improvement. What do you think of this list? Do you own any of these dogs?

This topic caught my attention because currently I have a micro bulldog that does not bark. I have never had a dog that didn’t bark at all. I have heard her maybe 3 times let out a “ruff”, but I think it was by accident. Haha! I have had Japanese Akita’s that rarely barked. They would bark if someone step on our property as a warning, but they were not usually very vocal. As I was growing up we had Chows also and they were quiet dogs too! Our most vocal dog was our Golden Retriever and I think it was just for attention.

Anyway. I love that my current dog does not bark. Maybe she will if someone tries to steal her. Hahah!
