Description

The Affenpinscher, also called as Affen, is a breed of tiny, shaggy dog that originated in Germany. It belongs to the toy breed family which is adored for their diminutive size and sweet expression. Like any other lapdog, Affenpinschers embody sheer charm. They have been bred to become vermin killers and engaging companions. Their wiry double coat usually comes in gray, black, silver, red, and a combination of black and tan colors.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the Affenpinscher breed normally stand a height of 10 to 15 in at the withers, and weigh about 7 to 8 lbs.

Temperament

Affenpinschers, in general, are bold and inquisitive pets. They are friendly, affectionate, and amusing. These tiny little fellows bond well with other dogs and animals especially when properly socialized. The breed is quite busy and stubborn, though may love to monkey around and become very playful and mischievous. Affens are lively, sharp-witted lapdogs that tend to be courageous and confident. They are known to be fearless defenders that can become very authoritarian when dealt with poor human leadership. Firm yet gentle handling is necessary to keep these pets stable-minded. Additionally, Affens enjoy hiking and camping. They like to bark and climb fences. The breed does best around a happy family that loves entertainment.

Grooming

Affenpinschers are not demanding when it comes to coat care. Their wiry coat only needs to be brushed and combed approximately a couple of times a week. Trimming may also be done twice a year, though bathe sessions can be carried out only when absolutely necessary.

Health Concerns

Affens are commonly susceptible to a few health complications. These include urological problems, slipped stifles, fractures, open fontanels, patent ductus arteriosus, hip dysplasia, collapsed trachea, and cataracts. Nonetheless, the breed has an average life expectancy of 11 to 12 years.

Best Environment

Due to the breed’s tiny size, Affenpinschers make excellent apartment companions. They are usually highly active indoors, and will do just fine even without a yard. These endearing lapdogs tend to be sensitive to extreme temperatures, and may require some daily exercise such as daily walks.
