Description

The Skye Terrier is a breed of long yet low-to-the-ground dog that originated in Scotland. It belongs to the terrier breed family which is recognized for their distinct personality and excellent hunting skills. Skye Terriers have been bred to hunt animals such as fox, vermin, and badger. Their flat double coat is soft and woolly underneath, and straight and hard outside. Coat colors usually include solid shades of blue, gray, black, gray-blue, fawn, cream, and silver platinum. Some members of the line have some white markings on the chest.

Height and Weight

The average height of both the male and female members of the Skye Terrier breed is about 10 in at the withers. Dogs normally weigh between 35 to 40 lbs, while bitches are slightly lighter with a 25-30 lbs weight.

Temperament

Skye Terrier2

Skye Terriers, in general, are polite, good-natured dogs that are loving and affectionate toward its family owners. They are brave, spirited, and loyal pets. The breed is also delightful and very playful. They love to become the center of attention, though can be rather willful at times especially when led by a passive owner. Skye Terrier need a handler who can display a natural air of authority over them. Early socialization is also highly necessary so they get accustomed with various different people, sights, and noises. Because these terrier dogs like to chase, they are hardly ever trusted with small, non-canine animals. Proper leadership and extensive training is advisable to keep the breed from developing Small Dog Syndrome which is usually manifested by several behavior problems. These include obsessive barking, dog aggression, over-protectiveness, suspicion of the unfamiliar, and or worse, biting.

Grooming

Skye Terriers are relatively easy to groom. Their coat needs regular brushing of about a couple of times a week to prevent matting. Their hair, nonetheless, need not be clipped. Owners are encouraged to trim the bottom hair to keep them from tracking dirt off the ground. Bathe these little Skye Terriers as necessary. They are moderate shedders.

Health Concerns

Skye Terriers are a fairly healthy breed. They have an average life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. However, like any other canine, the breed is also susceptible to a few health issues. These include their being achondroplastic or having very short legs, possibility of having puppy limp, degenerative disc disease, mammary cancer, hypothyroidism, hemangiosarcoma, and autoimmune problems.

Best Environment

Because of their small size, and average exercise needs, members of the Skye Terrier breed generally make excellent apartment dogs. They are fairly active indoors and access to a small yard would be ideal. The breed likes to be with people so kennel-living could not be an option. Taking them out for daily walks is advisable, as well as giving them opportunities to have a good romp in a secure open space.
