The True Dog Parent Test

“This post contains affiliate links, and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.”

Every one “claims” to love their dog but only a few dog parents really do.

So I’ve devised a little test to determine if you’re a real loving dog parent.

Now we can’t get results until you finish the test, okay?

Here we go.

Step one: Scratch behind your dogs right ear for 10 minutes.

Step two: Scratch behind your dogs left ear for 10 minutes.

Step three: Repeat until your dog tires of this and wanders off.

If your dog never wanders off, you are a real dog parent.

If your dog does wander off, chase them down and start all over.

If this doesn’t seem like a very fair test, there’s an obvious reason for that.

You don’t have four legs and a tail.

I happen to think this is a fair test.

Go here to watch this adorable video.

It might make you cry.

You can watch the video while you do the dog test.

Tell me how many rounds you got to scratch your dogs ears below.

I started reading everyone’s comments right from the top, and there are plenty, and I’m sure that animal lovers outnumber animal abusers, but why then can’t animal neglect and abuse be stopped? The video made tears run uncontrollably down my face, and I agree with Dottie, my animals are far better than humans. All our animals have come to us in one way or another and we could not imagine our lives without any of them, and that time sure has to come too, but our homes and hearts are always open to a new furry face. After reading so many stories of animal abuse and signing so many petitions, it is a breath of fresh air to read all the above stories. I’m sure if we all had to sit around a table to tell our happy and sad stories, we’d sit for a ve…………..ry long time. Enjoy the festive season, I’m glad to know of you through your animals.

I AM OWNED BY 2 -2 YEAR OLD SISTERS. DOMINIQUE AND DESIREE’. THE TEST WASN’T FAIR. I ONLY HAVE 2 HANDS FOR 4 EARS, I WORKED THE BEST I COULD THEY HAD PATIENCE FOR ME. AFTER A HOUR THEY STILL WERE CIRCLING TAKING TURNS. I HAD A CHARILY HORSES. SO I TOOK THEM FOR A WALK AND A GOOD BRUSHING. THEY SLEPT ON ME FOR ANOTHER HOUR. MY LIFE WOULD BE SO EMPTY WITH OUT THEM.

My dog 1st allows ear scratches, then turns to allow butt scratches, then falls to the floor for tummy scratches, then goes to get the other 5 dogs so THEY can get scratches, then he lays his body across me to let me know he owns me and would like more scratches, then cat comes along, pushes all dogs out of his way so HE can get ear, butt, tummy scratches. This can go on for hours.

My girls both love the rubbing and scratching Once I start they keep bugging over and over. They will both roll over on their backs and then want their bellies rubbed. Peanut, my Chihuahua, is the one who wants it the most. Daisy, my Lab Blue Tick mix, isn’t as much into it as Peanut, but she likes it too.

The husband and I are empty nesters as far as our 2 human children go. However, we have seven 4 legged children 3 of them are turtles Daniel,Peter and Paruzia, all spoiled, loved and pampered. The four dogs are as follows: Shya 13yrs blonde cocker,Mylez (Miles)9 yrs chihuahua,Xigo(She go)5yrs min pin and Dohzho 2 yrs male red nose pb. Rub any of these babies they will stay forever. They can never be close enough to us. Shya loves booty rubs. Mylez loves to stand and face me as I massage his little body. Dohzho loves to rub our tummies with his head. We cannot enter the house without Xigo flipping on her back to get a tummy rub.

Gordon, my 5 yo bassett hound naturally loves to be scratched behind his long silky brown ears. The weight of his head drops right into my hands, the more I scratch the more weight I get of his skull.
Gordon is handicapped, woke up about 2 months ago paralzyed in his rear quarters. We have no idea what happened to him. But Bless his heart, he now crawls around like a seal or walrus. He was so sad when it first happened, but his attitude is back to the the kind, sloppy, sleepy young fellar he is. Probably gonna have to buy him a “doggie” wheelchair, as he doesn’t like having to be still. He has adjusted so well to his situtation. Wants to be on the go and follow my husband all over. All David has to do is turn on the radio and Gordon is on the move towards the garage. Just wants to be there close so he can keep and eye on everything. I call him my “SLED PUPPY” as my husband loads him on a kids’ snow sled, and takes him in and out to use the bathroom. The docs tell us he may still recover more as time goes on, but of course there are no guarnetees. GORDON IS 60 LBS. OF PURE LOVE, HOPE AND LAZINESS. And yeah, he gets lots of ear scratches everyday, afterall, who can deny those deep brown eyes?

Brynda, we have a man we call Uncle Lennie who raises funds and makes sure homeless and owned pets, where the owner cannot afford the vet care, get what ever they need. Recently he had a cart made for a little one that had back legs amputated. Maybe a cart would work for yours. I have 4 rescues. This is my most recent group. They are 5 and under. Over the years I have had so many. It so happens that the 4 I have were “Uncle Lennie’s” special cases, meaning they had been adopted and returned to shelter for whatever reason (I would say stupidity). Bottom line is that they have taken a toll on furniture & carpet, but who cares…..those are only things. The unconditional love you get, who cares if it costs a furniture leg or two….actually 6 🙂 Bottom line is we love them & they love us. My sister-in-law has a Bassett/Beagle named Angie, she is a bit overweight at 60 pounds but she is so cute. She likes to sleep til noon and whe travels about 1 foot per hour, but when she is tracking a scent she can move. Adorable breed. Mine are all mixed, have a Wolf hybrid/husky/shepherd, some sort of small herding dog, Native Carolina Tall Mountain Cur cross & Black & Tan coonhound who was left starving probably because she wouldn’t hunt. I lost my husband over 3 years ago and I can truthfully say these girls have saved my sanity & brought joy back into my life. God bless anyone who adopts!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, this is my 1st time on this site & I made my comment clear back in Feb. sometime, so I’ll repeat it–sorry! When I scratch my Sadie, (hate to call her a dog, puppy even sounds better)she doesn’t scratch my ear, but gives me all kinds of kisses, and scratches my hand so she can get more scratches, petting and loving. I think her kisses are better than the scratches, anyway they feel better! I can tell her I want a kiss and she always runs over and gives me one, two or more than I can count! She loves to give kisses!

When my hand feels like it will fall off & I pause she moves closer to me and nudges me to continue till I do. When I am on my laptop she lay’s on top of it to have me continue.

I thought I rescued her from a shelter six years ago but the truth is she rescued me. She is my only rescue & the best dog I have ever had. I take her with me anywhere “a dog” is allowed.

She sings to my husband for cookies & he has taught her to say Mommy & No.

Mandy is a 12pd schnauzer/dachshund mix. Everywhere I take her people say how cute she is and ask what breed she is.

I hardly remember not having a dog. A lot of the ones I have had recently had were rescues. A pit/shepherd mix adopted at pound, a corgi mix dumped by my house while I was outside, a dapple doxie at shelter where I was working, and even a rescued abandoned kitten I found with the hair and skin torn off her tail. The pit mix and corgi mix lived long lives with me 12 and 13 yrs respectively. I still have the doxie, bobtail cat (after tail amputation) and have added 3 yorkies to the mix. I actually chose these. When I start petting or scratching, it is a free for all with all 4 dogs and Bella, the cat for attention. It takes about 30 minutes for them to be satisfied until the next time. Bella, Ginobili (doxie), and Yorkies, Duke, Tiago and Paisley think I am a good parent no matter what anyone else thinks. Most nights find all 5 of them in bed with me. I don’t know what I would do without them although it is pretty hectic at times. They give me unconditional love and I try to see that they each get this from me as well.

I love dogs. They live in the moment. They don’t lie. They offer unconditional love. Twelve years ago, I adopted Baxter, “Mi Angelito” a Tibetan terrier from Atlanta Pet Rescue. He is now 14 and not as sprightly as he used to be (neither am I, for that matter!). He doesn’t move around too much and I dread the thought of his going over the Rainbow Bridge, although I know he will be there waiting for me along with Kasha, Kirsha, Maxfield and Chaplin, all adopted. A year and a half ago, I adopted Penelope, a Pekingese from SAFE Pet Rescue. She is enchanting and loves to play. We play a lot! She loves having her belly scratched. I call her “Mi Chinita”. This past January, I adopted (from SAFE) the cutest Maltese. We looked into each other’s eyes and it was love at first sight. Her name is Luna and she looks like a little fluffy cloud. I call her “Luna, Lunita, Cascabelera” (jingle bells). When I am in my home office, both lie down under my desk. If I leave the room, they follow me and come back when I return. Sometimes I trip over them. Penelope and Luna vie for my attention. If I am brushing one, the other sits there and waits for her turn. Baxter doesn’t want to get in the bed anymore, so he sleeps in his bed. Penelope and Luna do sleep with me and cuddle up next to my pillow. I love them all so… They are my sunshine… I believe I am a good mother and all three are my babies.

      Hey Jack,

I saw your comment on here about your dog, “Baby”. You should get another dog! There are sooooo many of them that would love a good home. It would be a great tribute to “Baby”! I have a nearly 8 year old rottie mix that is the best dog I ever had! She is pretty
robust and healthy right now but I think ahead about when it is her time. I figure we have lots of good times left. But I cannot imagine my life without her! I’m currently dog-sitting my son’s one year old aussie and that pup is getting on every single nerve KB has! LOL! She DOES not want to play with Oeddie at all and avoids him at all costs! I guess dogs want to pick their own buddies too and notbe forced to play with “youngsters!”

I have done rescues for over 40 years,61 years young now, and I have 8 at the present time. There is a 100 lb black lab,a german shepard,a beagle,2 sisters-half pit, half boston terrier,a pug and 2 boxers. There is nothing like the reactions of a rescue dog after they realize they get fed everyday, they have beds and blankets, fresh water,no beatings,no fear,a kind word,a hug, comfort when something scares them, treats, medicine to cure them and quiet times-one on one-where they don’t have to compete for attention. The ones I have now can’t be rehomed due to medical or emotional scars that just won’t heal. They have their forever home with me.People say it’s so good of me to rescue them, what people don’t know is that the dogs rescue me everyday, with their unconditional love, kisses and looks in their eyes as they follow me from room to room, just like a parade! Wouldn’t trade my experiences, tears, laughter, joy and heartaches when I let one go to the Rainbow Bridge for anything in the world.

Rescues are so special and they really do appreciate the lucky break they got when they found someone to love them and care for them every day for the rest of their lives. I notice that everytime I have taken in a pet that was homeless. That and all the frogs, lizards, giant grasshoppers, earthworms, and snakes that my rescued cat, Bella, gifted me with. She delights in bringing me creatures she has found, much to the delight of my 2 oldest grandsons. I hate to go to an animal shelter or look at pictures of dogs that are awaiting adoption or facing euthanization. If I had the room and the means, I would take them all. I wish every pet belonged to a responsible pet owner.

I have two Great Danes, when I scratch behind their ears they will not leave me for any reason. Eventually they hike their huge behinds up to share my chair, bend those huge heads around to rest on my knee. When they start to snore I know that I have done right by them.

I have two beautiful poms, their names are Prissy and Sassy.I try to scratch both left ears of each one. They get peeved off cause they want both ears scratched at the same time. They don’t like sharing the “Scratch”.You caused a problem for me.They turned around and walked away from me and went to Daddy to see if he could do a better job.He couldn’t and now they are depressed. Thanks a lot! I don’t like them having to go to bed depressed. So,Prissy is pouting while awaiting her turn to be scratched after Sassy.Have a good night!

My little Gibbs came to help my daughter recover from a brain injury. In the nursing home, he quickly learned the routine and became everybody’s baby. At home, he leads the older dog Tippy around by the ears. No cage, no kennel. Both sleep where they want, go where they want in the house. Gibbs loves to sleep across my neck with his little face next to mine, waiting on kisses to his little face. Some say he is spoiled. Some say they would “get rid” of “that dog”. Six months ago my daughter died. Now, little Gibbs licks away my tears and gives Tippy and me a reason to get up in the morning.

I have four dogs and you can’t scratch one behind the ears without all of them vying for attention. However, they do get very excited when they hear me call them. The boys like to cuddle with me more than the girls do, there are two male and two female. I think that’s more because the girls know the boys are the alpha of the group. When I have my girls alone they are both equally as affectionate. They love being loved and look for the hugs and kisses all the time, which are plentiful in my household. I think I love my dogs more than I love my man. LOL

I have 6 rottweilers and they all jockey for position to have anything on them scratched. You want a good test, try vacuuming your dog with the hose attachment, and if he lays down and closes his eyes completely relaxed, you’re a twisted dog parent.

I have 1 Rottweiler but have owned them all my life. If a rott lays down completely relaxed while you use the hose to vacuum him, your not just a twisted dog parent, the dog is in the prozac again. 🙂 (Extra good parent that is very trusted)

I have never had one that didn’t view the vacuum (and mower) as a mortal enemy. The ears… mine have always love that. Now I must post whether I am good, good and twisted or ready for the Prozac myself.

I treat my 3 large German shepherds like my kids, very few rules
    1) don’t chew the furniture
    2) don’t crap in the house
    3) protect their human family
    I think that’s it.
I don’t make them do lots of silly tricks, I want them to be REAL dogs.
They get the run of the house and the yard, they go everywhere I go,
They get the best food, treats and toys I can find.
I take them to the park several times a day and let them run after balls until
They just want to lay around and sleep.
Oh, I don’t mind if they bite me, I just bite them back

But when we go to bed I do lay on my bed and rub his belly, scratch behind his ears, and talk to him, and see the love in his eyes. I know his time with me is limited now, so I cherish the private times we have now. He’s my big baby, and no other dog could ever take his place. Thank you Lord for him.

We have three GSD’s and one genuine rescue muttpuppy, all of them will let us scratch behind their ears and will bump each other out of the way if the dogs think one is monopolizing the scratching hands. The muttpuppy can, with head held high, walk under the German Shepherds. She is a very secure little girl. Our two cats will, at times, sleep on top of our largest male GSD.

I know I am a true dog parent. They also give me kisses and my Pom, Gabriel wants to clean my eyes, kiss my hand and give lots of mouth kisses (which entails keeping my mouth closed or he will lick the inside of my mouth too.)

My dogs didn’t like the test. They (all three) don’t like having their ears touched. However, they (yes, all three) burrowed further under the blankets with me on the couch and enjoyed a rotating “under the collar” scratching”. Which, by the way, I will get a very emphatic nudging by them should I stop for a moment for any reason.

Sharon, I heard, before I got my chihuahua, that they lie on your heart and I found that to be true literally and figuratively. When my boy was a puppy, he slept under my chin, on my chest. Now fully grown, and NOT a teacup, he still has nights that he tries. He seems to give up after a short time, realizing that some how or another it’s just not as comfortable as it once was. And being completely under his paw, I suffer it out until he gives it up.

My daugher had an 80 lb pit bull/lab mix and a 60 lb pit bull and they both thought they were lap dogs. But they were sneaky, first one paw would get to the lap, then the other, then the head finally they’d (one at a time) be sitting on your lap with their head on your shoulder. When there, they would hold perfectly still hoping that if they didn’t move you wouldn’t notice that 60 or 80 lb dog crusing your lap and chest. They were soooo cute.
