While searching amid the rubble for earthquake survivors in Turkey, a courageous Mexican rescue dog lost his life.

Following the tragic earthquake that has already claimed more than 35,000 lives, Proteo was sent to Turkey as part of a massive international operation.

In a statement released on Sunday, February 12, the Mexican Ministry of Defense expressed gratitude to Proteo: “Thank you Proteo for your heroic work, you fulfilled the Mexican Army’s mission.”

“The members of the Mexican Army and Air Force deeply regret the loss of our great companion, the dog ‘Proteo’, you fulfilled your mission as a member of the Mexican Delegation in the search and rescue of our brothers in Turkey. We are proud of you.”

Although the exact cause of Proteo’s death is unknown, he is said to have spent several days performing vital work in disaster zones in search of survivors.
