US Coast Guard officers in Oregon rescues a Golden Retriever who fell over a sharp cliff on New Year’s Day.
PEOPLE reports that Leo, the three-year-old Golden Retriever, was out celebrating New Year’s Day with his owners, Alexa Fery and Cody Chimienti.
Fery and Chimienti were walking Leo along with their other dog, Remy, when the former decided to run ahead of them.
Unfortunately, Leo made one wrong move that led him falling over the edge of the cliff at Ecola State Park in Oregon and onto the shores of Cannon Beach.
Leo’s owner immediately called 911 and Cannon Beach Rural Fire Protection District immediately responded and have set up a rope system to rescue the pooch.
They revealed, “Cannon Beach personnel were ready to rappel down the cliff side when Coast Guard arrived and was able to retrieve the dog and was reunited with the owner.”
The US Coast Guard posted about the incident on X (formerly Twitter). “A #USCG aircrew from Astoria rescued a dog that had fallen off a cliff in Ecola State Park in #Oregon,” They wrote. “The rescue swimmer was deployed and moved the dog into the hoisting basket.”
The Coast Guard also reveals that their crews worked with fire departments from Cannon Beach, Nehalem Bay, and Seaside to ensure a safe rescue.
A day after the rescue, the Coast Guard shared a footage of the pooch’s rescue. Talking to the Coast Guard, the owner reveals that after being rescued, the pooch stayed overnight at an emergency vet.
“He has a few cuts and bruises. All things considered, he is doing good. We are so thankful he is alive and expected to recover,” Leo’s owners said.
In light of the incident, a GoFundMe was established to help pay for Leo’s vet bills. Trina Boam, the parent who help set up the GoFundMe with Leo’s owner, revealed the severity of Leo’s injuries.
Boam wrote, “After spending his first night in the hospital, doctors determined that he had a pneumothorax which was causing difficulty breathing, pulmonary contusions, several lacerations and bruises, a broken canine tooth, and a broken jaw.”
In the latest update, it was also revealed that Leo stayed a second night in the hospital to ensure he is stable enough to undergo surgery.
Boam wrote, “Please keep Leo in your thoughts as he recovers; as well as Alexa and Cody as they nurse him back to the energetic dog we all love.”
Due to the incident, Cannon Beach RFPD offered a warning to dog parents saying, “Although the coast is beautiful, it is not perfectly safe. We’d like to remind everyone to keep dogs on leash when hiking unless other wise stated “Dogs Allowed Off Leash” on the state park website.”
