Do you know how dogs react to human pregnancy? Some dogs react whenever a member of a family is pregnant. This probably comes from the dog’s extraordinarily keen senses, almost like ESP for humans.
Pregnancy is no joke, especially for the women experiencing it. Certain mood swings and changes occur, both physically and emotionally. And at some point, dogs have good detection skills when it comes to sensing these changes. The level of sensitivity to these changes actually varies among the different breeds. Some breeds don’t seem to care about the pregnancy, while some others run about and have certain reactions to it.
Some people believe that dogs have a sixth sense, but in reality, they just have better senses when it comes to body language and emotional changes in a person. The extraordinary senses that some dogs seem to possess may be due to the fact that they are indeed quite gifted in sensing these changes. Even emotional changes of people can be seen and detected by dogs.
Another thing is that they are also extraordinary at smelling things, such as odor changes due to the differences in a pregnant woman’s body chemistry, and many react to it.
How Dogs React to Human Pregnancy
Since dogs are capable of identifying these changes, some of them react to them, especially if their master happens to be the pregnant woman. Different postural behaviors can occur, and the dog might start acting weird towards his/her owner. Some dogs may even growl or be overprotective of their owner, and their moods might change. And other dogs may start following their master everywhere.
While these pregnancy stresses for dogs can occur, there are still ways to treat them. If the dog is already well-trained, dealing with its behavior is much easier. One way is to set up clear rules and boundaries around the house and wherever you take your dog. Try giving him some basic commands and help him focus when these situations occur. Once the owner has forcefully taken control of the situation, the dog will feel more relaxed and the tension should go away.
In some areas, there are programs by different organizations that focus on counseling families on treating their dogs that are experiencing this kind of pregnancy stress. The basic key to helping your dog out of this stress is providing him with good care and extra attention to his emotional needs. Dogs in this kind of situation need to be calmed down so they can avoid unwanted annoyance to the family. It is just a matter of preparing the dog for the new baby, and good planning should be established for times when emotions will be a fact of life. Most pregnant women themselves experience emotional stress, and it will be likely “rub off on” the dog. And this is why the dog needs to be properly trained so it can relax to make way for the new member of the family.
Having an idea of how dogs react to human pregnancy will help you when the happy event occurs in your family. You’ll know what to look out for, and can thus keep any problems from becoming serious.
Did you experience unusual dog behavior when there was a pregnancy in your family? Please share below.

Hi, I am currently the not sure of my pregnancy but on last night I had a stray dog come sit in front of my car when I prepared to pull out of the driveway. Could this be a type of behavior to show the sense of pregnancy or something else?

I am not sure if I am pregnant. My husband and I have been trying for quite awhile. I will find out later this week if we are. But my 9 year old chihuahua has been humping me quite a bit the past few days. This is not normal behavior for him. I will be walking and he is just jumping on my leg. Has anybody experienced anything like this before?

My daughter is pregnant and our 9 year old male Yorkie, who prefers my husband over any of the girls in the house, now climbs on her, leans against, kisses her, etc. I am windering if he can smell the hormones of pregnancy.

My wife is I months pregnant. Twice this week, while we were not home, our 11 year old male great Dane mix clawed his way through the door to the basement (we come in and out this way as the garage is downstairs) the first time he cut himself and was bleeding a little bit, the second time he made a hold big enough to get through and was waiting in the basement for us. The first time there was a thunderstorm and the second time was 4th of July fireworks, he never liked loud noises that but has never reacted this way. I'm wondering if it has to do with her pregnancy.

Hi just wondering if anyone knows if having a pregnant woman in the house will force female dogs in the same house to go into heat I am currently 15 weeks pregnant and my dogs seem to be going into heat for the second time in the last 3 months not sure if I should be concerned or what seeing as how I have five females at home taking them all to the vet at one time would be quite costly any help someone could provide would be greatly appreciated

My pregnancy has caused conflict between my two American bulldogs I have had to seperate them because whenever they are together and I'm around they will try to kill one another. If anyone else is around they are fine it's just me

I want to know as well… Our dogs are doing the same thing. Used to love each other, but now I’m pregnant and they can’t stand each other. I’d like to think things will improve after the baby is born…

I have 4 pitbulls, (3 male, 1 female. All spayed and neutered.) They all got along great, were bestfriends, played, ate and slept together. The second I found out I was pregnant, two of my males began to turn on each other to the point where they have gotten into two major fights requiring surgery and are 100% separated now. My other male stayed out of all of it for the most part until I was 25 weeks pregnant.. then he, who never got in the fighting mix started getting EXTREMELY short tempered with my other male.. I don’t know how to fix this, is this even a thing that can be fixed.. I need HELP!!! I do not want to re-home any of my babies. I love them too much.

Its possible theyre reacting to stress or anxiety you may not realise youre carrying. I know when I found out I was pregnant I was excited but still nervous with a lot going on in my head all the time so your dogs could be spooked by that. My dog changed too, only he became more kissy and snuggly and just recently has begun carrying around his stuffed toy to sleep with, which he never did before. Maybe increase their amount of exercise so they dont have as much energy or drive to fight each other? Couldn’t hurt..

We have a 3 year old German Shepherd service dog for my husband. She's obviously very connected to him but normally solidly indifferent to me. I'm now 15 weeks pregnant and the week or two she's started snuggling me and been treating me like I'm her service handler. Also, she's been nesting: making her space larger, bringing in blankets and stuffed animals, etc. (she's spayed so it's not her!)

I have a male Chihuahua (Loki) he is 2 yrs old and for the past 2 years he has been the baby of the house, he is so spoiled and he sleeps with me. I'm 36 weeks pregnant now, at the beginning he was very close and I couldn't get away from him because he would whine a lot towards the middle of my pregnancy he became distant from me but very close to other members of my family. Now that I'm at the end he has been close again bit he started doing things, like scratching himself a lot or licking exsively sometimes biting at his paw, and he actually hurts himself. I had taken him to the vet and everything was fine, he eats well sleeps well he is playful but from time to time he starts doing those things, I was just wondering can he be stressed or something since I'm so close to having the baby. Which means soon he will have to share my attention.

I am currently 4 1/2 months pregnant. My Great Dane has been following me more than usual. Whining when I walk away, won’t let me go to the bathroom alone. I figured it was because I am pregnant. She had a vet appointment today for happy tail. One of the girls jokingly said to her when rubbing her belly ” your nipples are bigger than a pregnant cow” and laughed. It didn’t click to me until we got home and was laying in bed as I seen a milk drop sitting on her nipple. I’m like oh wow now I know what’s going on. A few years ago our other dog was doing the same thing. Vet said it is false pregnancy because I was pregnant during the time. It went away but came back. One night I had woke up to check on the baby and I look over to her crib the dog was laying next to her what looked like trying to be protective. I had to make the dog get out and couldn’t allow the dog to sleep in the room for a few weeks. I know it wasn’t my dogs fault but I didn’t want anything to happen to my baby either. But anywho this is try! Female dogs will lactate while you’re pregnant.

Hello everyone and Happy New Year. Right nowy dog is acting very strange. My girlfriend and I have lived together for about a year now and although pepper is my dog (shih tzu), she was always loving to my gf and vise versa. But for about 6 or so weeks she has been avoiding her, shaking at times and follows me around the house where ever I go. Everywhere. She 10 years old and yes, she’s my baby and follows me… Never like this. We did just recently found out that she is around 9 weeks pregnant and she also has ovarian cancer. The way my dog has been acting is really starting to bother me which is how I found this site and thread.
Is this normal? Is there an underlying problem with perhaps my gf being a bit more sick. We see the doctor this Tuesday 1/3 but I’d like to see if someone had any advice for my dog.
Thank you
Paige

I am so heart broken. My dog Biscuits is my heart of my life. He goes every where with me, even to work… But since I have fallen pregnant he is avoiding me and doesn’t want to come to me really. He want my partner more now. Could this be jealousy as he can sense that a new member is joining the family?

I’m wondering the same. Im 6 months pregnant and two months ago we lost our older dog to cancer, this is the 2nd time in 3 weeks that my 5yr old poodle tried to run away. She’s getting the most attention she’s ever gotten now with my other dog gone. Idk if she’s missing her sister or not liking the fact that I’m pregnant. She’s fixed and has taken the motherly role with cats before so I find my pregnancy hard to be the cause. I believe it’s because she’s missing her sister. 🙁

My dog knew I was pregnant over my first child before I did, he become really protective over me barking and growling at anyone I came in contact with wether he knew them or not. He followed me around everywhere and slept on the floor at the side of my bed every night. Once my bump started growing the dog used to nudge it with his nose n my bump use to kick back like they were playing with eachother. Ive fallen pregnant agen n hes following me everywhere n will not leave my side. If I have to go out and leave him he howls the whole time Im gone but I couldnt ask for a better dog hes brilliant with my 18month old son there so close its lovely ♡

Your comment make me feel better. My 2 dogs have been following me around like crazy. Can’t even go to the restroom by myself. Now that I am 3 weeks away they have completely mellowed out and just keep watching me like a hawk. I feel bad cause they are normally very playful so I try to play with every night. Did it get like that with your dog at the end?

My period is due in about 5 days but I have been feeling strange signs lately. Still a little hesitant to try a home test for fear of a negative result. But, my chihuahua who was normally fine with other people suddenly became “barky”. A toddler nephew who used to take my dog’s leash for short walks around our yard now cannot come close to me because my pet would bark nonstop. She’d come in between me and the child and would even start to growl. She never growled. I hope she senses something positive.

So we have a pitbull and an Alaskan Malamute. They are best friends always playing and licking each other. I am very close with the pitbull as she loves to snuggle and we spoon to sleep every night where as the the alaskan likes to do her own thing.
Now after 4 years of being together my dogs suddenly started fighting with each other. It is so upsetting and horrifying as one minute their best friends and the next their trying to kill each other and its very difficult to seperate them in a fight. The pitbull seems to be the one to start the fights and now always wears a mask to prevent it.
ANYWAY i came to realuse that this only started happening around the same time that I fell pregnant… I’m not sure if the pitbull is trying to protect me. Or it may online a be a coincidence and my two female dogs are going through changes and both want to be boss.

So I ran into this post cause i was watching a video on YouTube about pregnancy when i seen a comment about dogs being able to sense if you’re pregnant…
Yesterday i was at the park with a friend , this guy comes up to us with his Rottweiler and asks my friend to take a video of him commanding his dog to do tricks..
She comes up to my friend and doesn’t have a problem but she came up to me I pet her and played with her a little bit, then the dog kind of didn’t like me I would get closer to my friend that was recording and she would run up to me and jump on me and push me back two step, another thing too if i had my hands by my sides she would try playing with me, but if I had them up above my head she would sit down and wait for my hands to come by my side again to get up and start kind of (trying to bully me) .. and I got closer again and she did it once more .. I think I might be pregnant I’m not 100% sure yet… That was my first time seeing a dog react to me like that especially because I love dogs .. (she was also a very friendly dog)
I’m not sure if she was just really well trained or if she sensed me being pregnant because when her owner called her she would kind of just show off nd not listen

My bf’s dog doesnt follow me around at all and isnt super protective of me. Since ive become pregnant, she has decided to poop ONLY in the house and cause complete chaos. Does this mean a dog could be threatened by a pregnancy… like they feel they wont get enough attention when the baby comes that they will throw a fit for attention? Please tell me im not the only one with this problem…
Morgan
Jul 10, 2016 at 1:54 pm
Are you still having this issue? .. You just need to show as much love and attention to your dog as possible.. It could mean they’re threatened but it could also just be the hormone changes in you. Depending on the dog, the age, how far along you are, when this started, and when if it’s stopped.. It could even just be a phase … But from what I’ve learned/experienced and read up on showing the up most amount to attention to the acting out animal is the first and best step to take. When you become pregnant often animals don’t know how to act to all the different changes you are going through. They pick up per say on all your emotional, physical, mental, and hormonal changes and it sometimes stresses the animal out. So showing that love and affection and trying to make the animal as comfortable as possible and as if nothing has changed (try to continue the same routine as pre pregnancy) at least to start out is the best thing to help them cope. That’s rhe biggest thing, helping them cope through this stressful time for them as well..

My wife has six days left of her pregnancy and our dog started acting strangely around two or three weeks ago. He’s a Border Terrier and follows her around, sits across her bump with his paw on it and has started weeing on the carpet at night (which he never ever does normally). He looks depressed and anxious a lot of the time. I wish there was something we could do to reassure him and stop him from acting weird.

I have a two yr. old YORKIE male and a five month old YORKIE (my daughter in laws) PLUS my daughter in law is pregnant and he has been pretty much fine an occasional growling and protective. But she is due in five days and my male YORKIE ( the little one does not seem to phase her BUT THE MALE YES AND I JUSY WANT HIM TO GO BACK TO NORMAL.) is becoming more protective and NOW HE SEEMS DEPRESSED. I am the pack leader and I have kept our regular routine the same when new baby things come into the house we allow the sniffing, he has even sat in the car seat and carrier (NOT SURE IF THAT IS A GOOD IDEA) . He is MY BABY and I give lots of attention but he is just acting funny. He perks up at our alone times and when I ask him he wants to go for a walk, a ride in the ride car, he is an ESA dog and goes EVERYWHERE WHICH HAS NOT CHANGED BETWEEN BUT I NEED SOME GUIDANCE. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND HIS BEHAVIOR. This YORKIE mom is getting concerned.

Hi, I just found this site and I’m currently 17 weeks pregnant but noticed our dog acting out when we first found out we were expecting. She’s a 4 year old chihuahua/dachshund mix and she hasn’t had any problems being in her cage overnight until now. EVERY single night for the past few months at around 4am or 6am she barks very loudly and she doesn’t stop. We’ve tried comforting her, letting her out for a bit, treats, and lately it’s come to the point where my boyfriend is just too upset with her and we yell. Do you have any other suggestions and do you think this will stop when the baby comes? Thanks..

I think my dog is having a kind of extreme response to my pregnancy when we have visitors over. I am getting to my wits end not knowing how to deal with him. He is a fixed 4 year old German Shepherd Dog and has never had behaviors like this before. Every Friday we have visitors for a game night and his behavior is getting worse and worse. I am 5 months pregnant and his behavior started around the same time as far as I can remember. He use to just want attention when everyone was over and lay by peoples’ feet. Then it changed to him wanting to go outside when people came over. Now he seems to have completely lost his mind. He climbed into my husband’s lap, clawed at the doors (never use to do this, he has a bell), walks in rooms he isn’t allowed and usually is fine with not going in, won’t listen, wants in and out, constantly clawing at something, went into a room and started clawing things off the shelves when he couldn’t get into the room he wanted to, clawed at our air conditioning unit and the windows when he put him outside, and shows little to no interested in treats he usually likes or toys he usually loves. I seriously don’t know what to do. I think I am going to take him to a vet tomorrow and see if they can offer anything. We can’t even put him outside and wait for him to calm down because he is constantly destroying. Has anyone heard of this behavior before? Does it seem likely it can be related to my pregnancy?

Before birth put baby carrier in living area on the floor if needbe for a week or two.
When baby is born have someone bring home an article of ckothing or blanket the baby was in, and put it in infant carrier until the baby cones home so the pet has a little time to adjust beforehand.

When I was expecting my second baby my dog, a terrier would get on my lap, flop over and lay in my arms like a baby and go to sleep. It was if he was getting me in practice to feed the baby. After the baby was born, he never did that again and nothing I would do would get him to lay in my arms like a baby! The worse part, my husband was actually jealous of the dog because of how he would get in my lap!

We have two dogs and I am currently pregnant. My Australian Shepherd has become extra affectionate and mildly protective of me around other people. However my boyfriends chocolate lab has been a nightmare. He now is defensive with me all the time, acting dominant, and biting on a fairly regular basis. My Aussie wants to be protective of me with him, but he is much bigger and more aggressive than she is, so mostly she will just whine or bark and look scared and helpless when he gets bad with me. We just had to send him out to stay with my boyfriend’s parents, where he acts totally normal, so no one really believes me about how bad he is when is just me and the dogs at home.

When I became pregnant my pit bull sadie has become very protective and needy. She won’t let me go near other dogs (besides the little dog we have) and by won’t let me I mean when were out for a walk and she sees another dog she starts pulling HARD to go in the opposite direction n she follows me every where and has even started going potty on our upstairs landing despite multiple walks and when she’s out side refuses to poop. She’s a very well trained dog so all this behavior is very not normal for her! I still have 11 weeks until I’m due and I want to make sure my dog is ready for this baby what do you recommend?

Well, not all dogs want to be outside dogs all the time. I have an Australian Shepherd / Blue Heeler mix and although I leave the back door open for him so that he can go outside whenever he wants to yet, he wants to be where I am so he stays mostly indoors. Dogs are pack animals and need that love and affection that we good owners provide them. What is cruel and abusive is purchasing a dog and putting them in the backyard and spend very little time with them. I have a dog that I am aware of that spends all of his time out doors. They feed and water him in the morning and then spend no time with him. He’s hungry for attention. My dog has the option to sleep in the bed with me or anywhere he feels like. My friend’s ex-husband truly believed that me and my dog, Motley, have such a special bond that he truly knows what I am saying to him. I do have to admit, he is smart as well.
Yes, my dog could be out in the wild running free but dogs in the wild typically do not live as long lives as what a domesticated dog does. Out in the wild there are many more opportunities for them to get killed, starve to death, die of heat stroke or hypothermia. My beautiful boy will never have to suffer any kind of emotional, physical or food lack and he is aware of how very much he is loved. Not just by me but by everyone that meets him because he IS an EXCEPTIONAL dog.

You took the words right out of my mouth! Dogs are pack animals making it easy to understand why they may become different after understanding that their pack dynamics will soon change. My dog told me I had miscarried before I officially knew. She took a big sniff forelegs pinned to me while standing then went off and skulked on the lounge. This was the same for the next two conceptions. At just over 3 months pregnant now with 2nd. . She is more protective of me and has started attacking other dogs whilst on walks. My husband and I can back date this big change of behaviour to when we would have been only one week pregnant. She has also been more aggressive with demanding /barking at us to play tug with her. She is still getting a big walk or two a day so its not like dissolving energy is the going to help fix her behaviour. Its just part of the process. Clothing, cot and toy access given before our son was born helped but also bringing something home for her from the hospital. She slept under his cot and continued her protect behaviour when out on walks until he was on his feet.

My American Bulldog went through my last pregnancy (2.5 years ago) without displaying any strange behaviors, perhaps because she was just a pup. But now that she’s 4, and I’m pregnant with twins, she has gone NUTS lol! She has started following me EVERYWHERE! So much so that she has even jumped in the shower with me, and she does NOT like the water!!! And I’ve noticed that a lot of her behavioral changes are connected to the shower..but only when it involves ME. For instance, if I’m bathing my kids, or if I’m the one who’s in the shower, she follows me into the bathroom and either lays accross my legs (if I’m on the outside of the tub) and SHAKES. If I’m in the tub, she sticks her head through the curtain (wanting to jump in there with me) and stands there SHAKING….it’s so weird lol. She’s NEVER done anything like this before, so I have to believe it’s related to my pregnancy…but what’s with the shower??? Something about me being pregnant, and being in or near the shower when the water’s running, makes her flip out. The vet said it’s definitely behavioral and probably has something to do with my pregnancy hormones…but WOW…my girl has gone BANANAS lol..

I have a golden Labrador retriever (annabell) She’s 12, I’m 18, (sarah) I’ve had her since I was seven and we have been close ALWAYS! She followed me around everywhere even as a puppy. She also slept with me as a puppy. (She still does) I’m 4 months pregnant. She hasn’t acted funny or over protective. I mean my dog always used to growl at people when they got close to me when I was sleeping or if they moved to slow she would growl. But she hasn’t growled at anyone or been acting up. I’m happy about that… but I hear how a lot of dogs do and if mine isn’t doing that then she’s mad at me? I don’t know about that. I know when she’s mad at me she won’t follow me, she won’t sleep with me, she won’t nudge me to take her outside she would just potty in the house! so I know she isn’t mad I just don’t know if I should be worried or happy! I mean I’m sure not every breed cares right? I’m brothers cat definitely acts funny she sleeps next to me sometimes and she used to never leave my brothers side. Anyone had any advice? Thank you

Hi
Really looking for some advice if anyone can help. I’m a bit of a worrier!!
I’m 30 weeks pregnant and have an 22m old english bulldog. He has always been clingy to me and follows me everywhere, his well socialised and attended classes as a pup. His behaviour has got increasingly worse over the past few months with people and other dogs, he is constantly on edge, snaps at dogs and people if they go near him. His very protective of me, my dog sitter says he is fine when his with her and she takes him out with other dogs and people so I’m convinced it’s me and being pregnant.
I don’t want his behaviour to continue especially once the baby is here, any advice?
Many thanks

When I found out I was pregnant both times, my pitbull Tobey became very protective. He would go everywhere with me before I was pregnant and during but once I was pregnant he would demand to sit in front seat and I swear would bring that big pit head out like he was trying to be intimidating. One time I went to get mt husband his favorite beer after he had a bad day at work, tobey was with me and he started staring at this big guy. The guy actually told me to make him stop bc he was nervous. Also, once I had both my babies he was amazing, soft and lovinf. He let mt daughter pull herself up to stand and he let her learn to walk with him by very slowlt waljing with her. Like he knew what he was doing. Now she is 4 and he would rathwr sleep with her than me anymore.. haha. He is now older and I have a 4 month old and he is so sweet. He gives tiny kisses on his forhead with the tip of his tongue evert morning and sleeps on the floor next to his bassinet at nap time. …. pits r Awsome and so are other breeds with their preg moms and babies

My pitbull, Stella, started acting very strange when we came home from our honeymoon. She normally favors my husband, but suddenly she wanted to be with me at all times- just following me around, snuggling and giving kisses. We later found out I was pregnant and it all made sense! When we have people over she tends to sit in front of me or on my lap. She has shown no signs of aggression towards anyone, but makes sure I am safe at all times!

I agree with Sybil. abuse would be neglecting it by not feeding it, physically beating it, and mistreating it. I have seen animals that were abused. my family has always took in dogs that were abused so i know what problems comes with animal abuse. There are many people brought up also with the thinking that dogs stay outside. I agree small dogs need to be inside. but verbally attacking someone for this ideology is just as abusive. If you know they are doing the above mentioned that is one thing but if not do not automatically assume.

Jul 21, 2015 at 5:06 am
wow i agree with sybil on this one. Why verbally attack someone who has a small dog and has kept it outside. Yes I agree small dogs do need to be inside based on the fact they can be easily carried off by predators. Not everyone that keeps a dog outside is a animal abuser. Some people are brought up with the ideaology that dogs go outdoors. I love animals and I believe that unless you know the situation first hand and have seen it then do not assume for the fact of making yourself look idiotic. I love animals and any form of animal abuse regardless of animal species wild or domestic is wrong.

I have a german shepherd x rotty who has extremely good behaviour and works within the security workforce. When I was pregnant with my son, my dog seem more protective than normal not to ‘overly protective’ though at that point. One night I started to get back labour, this was my first child so I wasn’t sure if I was in labour I just thought it was normal back pain just a little more sore than normal. I didn’t get any pain at the front at all…. I was sitting outside, saying hello to my dog after just feeding him he came over to me stared at my belly oddly and moved his head from side to side and than just poked my tummy with his nose.. I laughed and thought it was adorable but had no idea why he was doing it.: That night/early morning I was getting serve pain in my back so we packed up and went to the hospital to find out that I was 4cm dilated that same day I had my son. I believe my dog had sensed it before I even knew he was on his way. I ended up having a emergency c-section so I was in hospital for about a week.. When I finally could come home I was so sore and my dog had greeted me, but had kept putting his head under my hand as I walked to my front stairs. My partner had come over to help me up and then my dog had jumped up on my partner and stood in between us. He started to become over protective from that point on. Maybe he could sense that I was vulnerable at that time. He wouldn’t let family near me and my son. He would stand in between myself and my family and would growl if they got to close. He’s very well socialised with my close immediate family and has never growled or came in between myself and them so this came to a surprise for me. My son is now 10 months old and has been nothing but a great companion to our little family. My dog and I have grown an even stronger bond since then on. He has been the best dog I’ve ever own. Just love him to bits 🙂

I’m 7 1/2 weeks pregnant With my first child. I have 2 well trained Doberman. Both know I’m pregnant. One dobbie is doing great, she’s a bit more protective but not acting out. The other has suddenly taken to my husband and trying to claim. She rubs on him then glares at me. She will pee by his side of the bed so he gets up with her. She will force her way in between us so he won’t touch me. Its as if she’s jealous of me and is claiming him for breeding rights. She is still sweet but now a mess. Tearing up dishes, plastic ware, cords, jumping on counters, eating out of the trash, peeing in the house. … at least one dog is behaving.

My dog is normally pretty attentive but the past week he’s been growling whenever my fiance comes near me. Yesterday he started sleeping on my belly. (pomeranian) My period isn’t due for a few more days but this strange behavior got me thinking…. I just took a test and sure enough- positive! I can’t believe he could tell so soon. I mean wow. He knew before I did

I have a pit mix and she’s almost always with me sleeps at the foot of the bed comes to work etc. I’m 16 weeks pregnant and the last 4 weeks she’s been extra clingy, I mean if I go to the bathroom and she was sound asleep snoring there she is waiting outside the door. If I’m cleaning the apt she tracks me her eyes moving back and forth. The other strange thing she does now is when she comes for a cuddle she tries to lie on top on my stomach. I think she can tell something’s going on and she’s feeling protective. I’m not too worried and she’s a very sweet dog never aggressive. I was just wondering if it was normal.

1. A dog is a pack animal and when you move any dog into your life you become a pack. When you shut your dog out of the pack they believe they are being ostracized. 2. Why did you get a Yorkie when you obviously had no idea about care of dogs and particularly very small dogs. 3. Why did you get a dog when you didn’t absolutely want him in then house to talk to and pick and cuddle and include in all aspects of your family life. To have a full, loving relationship with a dog is one of the most rewarding experiences any human can have. Not even another human can give you the commitment and undying love a dog will. It is not my intention to be mean I was just confused when I read your comments.

I have two english Bulldogs and now that I have gotten to my third trimester they are super clingy. I have a bully as well she has always been super clingy with me, but since ive been pregnant it’s next level. She has to be on top of me literally. And she just seems stressed. I don’t know how to help her relax. We have 7 months to go. I’m not to worried about how she’s going to be with the baby she is amazing with my 2 year old son. The sweetest.

I have a male Yorkshire that’s 6 years old. He slept outside since he was a baby till 2 weeks ago that he started crying and anxiously trying to come in the house and sleep in my lap all day, he also follows me everywhere and tries to go with me when I go out. I’ve been bloated, cramping and have been very gassy. I’ll find out this weekend if I’m pregnant.

You mentioned that you own a Yorkie. Do you not realize that they are INDOOR dogs? They are not an OUTDOOR breed. I can’t even imagine what that poor baby has been through. People like you don’t need to own a dog especially since you have no idea as to an indoor versus outdoor breed is. In fact no breed deserves to live outside. You disgust me.

May 11, 2015 at 3:51 pm
I agree! That is a small dog! Bring that poor baby inside! I have a pit bull and a terrier mix, and the pit bull lives outside, as he prefers the open area to run and be free as we have several acres to run and he is too large to be inside at almost 80 lbs, but my terrier mix is 20 lbs, and would be devastated if I put her outside! Pregnant or not, bring that poor dog inside, or give her to a good home that can take better care of her.

You are being attacked for keeping aT INY dog outside.
While I agree that that dog NEVER should be outside for more reasons than I can list here…People…instead of attacking this misinformed woman, let’s educate her and create a BETTER situation rather than putting her on the defence and possibly having yet another dog end up in a pound somewhere, let’s insure that she and the dog stay together in a proper, loving and safe manner.

I have a 6 year old American Staffy. I rescued her when she was 3 and a half months old, when I was already pregnant. She would lay next to me with her head on my stomach. Once I gave birth, she no longer did this. I became pregnant again, and right away she would want to lay her head on my stomach. I asked the vet about this the first go round, because I wasn’t quite sure, and sure enough, she told me the dog was listening to the baby.

Hi there,
My name’s Genna and I’m writing on behalf of Medavia, a media company based in Bristol, UK. I am looking to write an article about a dog who has sensed a pregnancy, or sadly, a miscarriage. You all seem to have some pretty amazing stories; I was wondering whether any of you might be interested in discussing it with us. We do supply a fee for stories we publish, so there is the potential for you to make some money whilst sharing your canine pregnancy tales!
If this is something you might be interested in, please get in touch on here. Or, you can reach me at: [email protected]

I’m 32 weeks pregnant. We have a German Shepherd/Border Collie. He was always my husband’s fan but when I became pregnant (even before I knew or suspected) he began acting differently. He would follow me around and if he was kept from me, he’d whine and fuss constantly (which was very frustrating since we couldn’t understand what he was unhappy about). After we got the news (at 7weeks) we looked back and realized what was going on. He has since only gotten more attached to me. If I’m sleeping, he has to be in the room with me. He won’t poo unless I’m the one who takes him out. He follows me absolutely everywhere in the house and will just watch me.

Hi, my name is Louanne. I had a dog, Ted, years ago. He was German/Australian Shepard, a fabulous and favorite of mine.. Because both breeds, as yours is, are herding breeds, I believe they are Amazingly intuitive. Mine was all mine..until my daughter in law got pregnant. We were living in the same house as I watched him, watch her. He even went so far as to tell her when it was time for bed. He saw this as his job, to care for her and the coming baby. After the birth we went home. We put the baby, in seat, on the dining table. Ted parked right there. He wouldn’t give up his position for anything, even steak.

My wife is 19 weeks pregnant. Before she was pregnant, and in the early stages of her pregnancy, our rescue dog would almost always sit in her lap and sleep on her side of the bed. Now, he only sits with me on the couch and sleeps on my side of the bed or between us. He will lay on the couch with her only if she is napping.
We are strict with him to keep him from stepping on my wife’s stomach. Maybe he avoids her so we don’t have to tell him no?
Has anyone else experience this?

So I have a 1yr old boxer girl (Dallas). She has been mine and my husband’s dog. I just found out I was pregnant today had a feeling I was since I missed my period and we have been trying. So three days ago my boxer has been carrying around two stuffed animals which one is hers and the other one is my other dogs. And she would take them to my side of the bed where there is a blanket on the floor and several pillows for my other two kids if they need to sleep with mommy. She would lay down with them all day in there and if you take them away from her she would chase you down and get them and go back to the blanket. I don’t know why she is doing this. I’ve talked to the vet and they think its a false pregnancy for her but could it be because I’m pregnant. I just don’t know what to think….

Hello Britnee! Yes, for sure it’s because you’re pregnant! I’m going through something similar except I’m 11 weeks pregnant and my 3 year old pit, Honey, had morning sickness, eats more, and instead of sleeping on the floor next to our bed, she wants to sleep in bed with me. If it’s laundry day, I’ll let her climb in bed, but if not I’ll lay next to her on the floor or on the couch. My Honey rolls up in a ball with her head on or next to my belly Or she’ll even spoon with me. She follows me all over and if I leave, she will wait for me at the door. Dont be frightened by Dallas’ behavior. She’s protecting you and giving you extra loven ❤ Good luck

When I was pregnant with my first child a friend’s Irish Setter couldn’t get close enough to me. She was a Mom herself & was very loving & protective of her pups & me as well. It was a very special experience & the bond was amazing considering she wasn’t even my dog. That was over 40 years ago & I still remember her fondly. Her name was Ruby & she was indeed a precious gem.

My dog knew that I was pregnant with my second child even before I knew, and I don’t think that she wasn’t happy about it. I had the habit of air drying bottles and nipples for my first child on the kitchen counter. I returned home one evening to find the bottles and nipples out on the living room floor, chewed and destroyed. Ironically, she ignored the entire loaf of bread that sat on the counter (one of her favorites) right next to the baby items. Weeks later, I discovered that I was pregnant. Fortunately, she welcomed the new addition to the family with open paws.

I had rescued a 3 month old American pit bull terrier when I was 5 months pregnant with my daughter. She has been by my side ever since. She followed me everywhere and always tried to lay with me on or near my belly. She has never been aggressive. Well I am now on my 2nd pregnancy and this same wonderful dog has produced milk and been hoarding my daughters small toys trying to feed them. As the milk part has gone away her nipples still sag and she is still by my side 24/7. I always give her attention and love on her. She also lays with my daughter when I allow her on the bed with us. I have never been more amazed by an animals reactions.

I thought I was the only one who had such a dog. When I was pregnant and getting near delivery my 7 yr. old mutt started acting funny. After I brought my son home and Dusty observed me nursing and listened patiently as my son flexed his lungs now and then. But one day I noticed a squeeky blue teething toy missing and also my dog had gone AWOL,I finally found her carefully carrying the little blue, smiley plane gently between her teeth into the depths of my closet where she had made a comfortable bed for her and her blue baby.To my amazement she gently placed her baby to her swollen breast,(which later filled w/ milk). From then on you didn’t dare touch that blue plane or pay the price.I was dumbfounded and had never met anyone w/ similar situations until you.

Oh man! I have a 3 year old Pit Bull Terrier that I rescued as well, named Honey, and she is exactly how you described your pretty girl to be. I am 11 weeks pregnant and Honey has had morning sickness and is eating more than usual. She’s great with the kids already so I highly doubt she will be aggressive with our newborn either.
Sending hugs and kisses your way ❤

So we got a dog over a year ago. My husband really missed having animals. I love animals but I’m not a great caregiver to them so it was our agreement that if we were to get said animal he would be primary caregiver. Well we have a dog he’s part chihuahua pat Pekingese very cute male dog. He loves me loves my daughter but is 100% my hubby’s he pretty much adores the hubby well I’m 37 weeks prego and since I was about 6 months the dog has become very protective of me and my belly. He would growl if someone came near me didn’t matter who. We corrected that but he’s still protective. We’ll in the last 3 weeks he will jump in bed snuggle my hubby for 5 min then he will come to me lay up against my belly and just stand guard… Is this normal? I mean I love him but I don’t do everything for him like my hubby does don’t get me wrong if he needs water I get that for him so on and so forth I’m just curious if this is normal behavior.

I will be 37 weeks on Christmas Day! As of Friday I was in early stages of labor, contractions and began dilating. I’ve only gotten to 2cm unfortunately. Scheduled for induction on Januaru 2nd due to gestational diabetes. At any rate I have a husky pup about a year and half old. Personality wise, I’d say she’s about the same. However, behavior is a different story. Friday I ce home from the doctor to having her make a mess all over my living room with trash. After I cleaned that up I went to the store. When I got back I had a mess of Hershey kiss wrappers all over my living room floor. Today I had an ultrasound, when we got home there was paper torn up all over the floor. Aside from the fact she never does stuff like this I wonder if she can sense it’s almost time. She’s also been super hyper, constantly wanting attention or wanting to play.

I have a 3 yr old (4 yrs in March) doggy. We aren’t exactly sure about his breed, we just know his mom was jack Russell. He has always been the “dominant” one with little man syndrome. But now that I’m pregnant, he has been having changes in mood. He has attached my self to me, which is fine, but when my husband plays with him, my little Presley doesn’t seem to be playing back but being mean. He plays just fine with me. Is this due to the pregnancy or is it him getting older? Also, he isn’t fixed so maybe that plays a role? And does this mean he is going to be bad with the baby? Should I get him fixed?
Responsible owners spay and neuter

Yes, you should get your dog neutered, regardless of whether or not you are pregnant. Unless he is from a champion line and you are an experienced, responsible breeder, you should have all dogs altered.

I am 3 days late but my periods come every 36 days so I have a long cycle and it usually comes on time. I’m having more pregnancy-like symptoms than period-like. My dog has been following me around EVERYWHERE lately, and absolutely has to sleep in my room with me and will scratch at the door all night if not. Hopefully he’s trying to tell me something! (:

Katherine, I raised Golden Retrievers during 5 pregnancies. I always allowed the dogs to jump on me on signal. I lost 4 babies and almost lost the 5th . At the onset of my 5th pregnancy my dogs would NOT jump on me on command or at all. I just knew I was pregnant again and gave birth to my little girl, now 53 years old, close to 9 months later. God is good!

HI I dont know if im pregnant yet but my dog of 8 years will not leave me alone, she follows me when everywhere. Tonight she just started puking randomly all she ate was dog food and shes really emotional. my dog wont look at me tonight because she is puking. she also put her head on my tummy which normally she doesnt do, and normally she avoids me. I have noticed my boobs are tender, i feel nauseous and very emotional ( i cried during a movie that wasnt sad). today i also had some light cramping and im late with my period. Could i be pregnant?

I just found out I’m 6 weeks. I dont have a dog but my little cousins yorkie Sammie seems as though he knows I’m pregnant. He follows me, he tries to lay on my stomach, and he wont let anyone come near me. He wont leave my sight. I think its cute

Just found out we are pregnant and my chihuahua won’t let my husband touch my stomach and growls when he touches me at all. Also, he won’t leave my side. If I move over a little, he moves over a little. If I leave the room, he leaves the room. It’s so endearing but it scares me that he will be possessive when we have our baby.

I’m 8 days late and have none of my normal period symptoms but rather ones that resemble more of early pregnancy symptoms. My period is usually right on time or only late by a day or two and I just feel different, as well as some other things that are probably tmi. I wouldn’t even be two weeks pregnant yet though so I can’t take a test yet but my boyfriend’s female german shepard who is usually more about him and slightly distant towards me has been attached to my hip this last week. She always has to be on the bed with me, wants to snuggle, and actually listens to me when I call her. We’ll see in about another week or so when I take a test if she’s acting this way because of a little bun in the oven or not.

I rescued a 3 month old pit bull when I was 6 months pregnant with my daughter. Ths pup has been by my side ever since. I am now pregnant with my second child and my pit has started lactating and takes my daughter’s rubber bath ducks and trys to feed them. Carries them around the house. If I’m on the couch my pooch is right there with my. She goes to the restroom with me waits in bathroom while I shower, sleeps right next to my belly. Like I said she was close to me with last pregnancy and after wards too. She is really close to me. In some ways I think it’s pregnancy sympathy like how my husband gains weight and gets morning sickness and heartburn for me. 🙂

I’m about 37 weeks and my dogs have both been acting differently since I found out. My 7 year old chihuahua got really protective over me at first; she bit anyone who tried to touch me! She’s mellowed out in the last month or so, but she and my 2 year old dachshund both still stay by my side constantly. The other dog has been acting very mopey lately, and sometimes he puts the side of his head against my tummy and pouts like he heard something bad. Neither of them seem to know what to do, but they definitely know something’s up.

My spouse and I think I might be pregnant. I took 2 tests a week ago and both came back negative yet all week our 2 year old Malamute has been acting strange around me. Sleeping in the bed with us (right beside me which she never does usually on the floor), staring at me constantly, head on my lap whenever I sit on a chair, curling up on the couch right beside and placing her head on my lap/tummy. She has always been a loving dog and would hardly listen to me yet has suddenly became “my dog” in the past week or so.
She’s even been getting “jealous” when the cats come near me. When I was pregnant with my other 2 daughters I didn’t have a dog so I’m not sure if this is an early sign.

I noticed over the last week my Jack Russel has been following me everywhere. He has been sleeping next to me and he even got aggressive with two different people who where trying to pet him. It was really strange because one was a child and he never barks at people. He also has been laying across my lap in the couch. I noticed my breast were tender and I was wondering if maybe I was pregnant. So I looked to see if maybe there was a correlation between my suspesiouns and his behavior. I think I need to go take a pregnancy test!

My 4 years old dog, that was always friendly with other dogs and ok with humans, has started acting out, in my first 4 weeks of pregnancy, he started growling at every dog he saw, at every stranger that came closer than 2 feet from me, I was so surprised, I could not understand, until I have searched the web, and apparently I am not the only one in this situation, because he is such a wonderful dog usually I just hope he will relax after the child is born, I am 5 months pregnant, and for the first 3 he was more anxious, maybe because I was very stressed.
He knew I was pregnant 3 weeks before I did!

This is happening to me! I did 2 pregnancy tests 2weeks ago and they were both negative. I noticed my 6month old staffie bitch started to behave very oddly around me about a week ago, wont listen or look at me only follows my boyfriend around. She has completely gone off me and will only treat my boyfriend as her owner now. So i found out today i was 3 weeks pregnant so i definitely think she knew before I did. I feel that she might think she will get replaced as I am her “human” mother. She just looks so sad all the time and I want to make her nothing but happy 🙁 x

My beagle just bit me for the very first time. I am on fertility meds that are the same as pregnancy hormones. I was shocked and saddened but I am beginning to think all of the hormonal changes may be to blame for her not wanting to be around me or lashing out at me. She is the most submissive dog by nature.

Hello everybody
We are five months pregnant with our first child and of course very exited, we have a mixed collie named daisy she is 4 years old , since last month daisy start acting weird around the house so my husband build her a very comfortable house in our back yard, at the begging she really enjoy it until about 2 week ago when something change when we start getting baby staff around the house , we live in canada so during nighttime we bring daisy inside due to the low temperatures , the first night she popped inside her kennel, so we thought maybe she is sick and took her to the vet , nothing, after that she doesn’t get her eyes out of me she follows me all around the house , when is bed time she starts crying so we can’t sleep well and something even vomiting we have take her so several doctor and all say the same she is a healthy dog she is just jealous, what can we do ?? We need to sleep at night my husband and I get up very early for work and this is not healthy for nobody in our home , we love daisy very much but we are very concern that all this behavior may get or turn aggressive when out baby is born.

My dog is acting the same, but we can see is the changes of pregnancy and his protectiveness of me. He wants to be next to my belly all the time and it’s obviously upsetting to him when he’s not allowed near my belly. We have several dogs and were fostering a puppy, the puppy would jump on me, and my dog would “protect” me. Barely liked my boyfriend getting near me. It’s annoying, but I see it’s his nature. I don’t think that it’s dangerous to the baby, considering everything has to do with introducing a new family member to the whole family. If you introduce your dog properly to a new family member there should be no problem. Everything lies in your hands. You cannot blame Daisy for acting the way she is acting, because she’s not doing anything wrong, she’s telling you there is a problem, maybe she feels left out, worried, overly stressed, you guys just need training. Good luck!

I am 8 weeks pregnant- for about a month (and still going!) my male dog has been constantly laying on me or just staring at me- sometimes he will bark (in a playful manner) at me and jump around, like he needs to go outside but then I open the door, he stands there just looking at me.. Like I’m supposed to know what he wants. I even see if he wants a treat but he just sets it down.
I think its just him wanting more attention because he knows there will be another holy terror running around soon.

My 3 year old GSD is doing the same. I’m only 6 weeks in and she’s been no more than two feet away (if I’m home and wake) for the last 2 weeks. Our Rotti is sticking close too but no where near as close as your GSD. I’m glad they seem to be onboard with the whole baby thing. My husband and I weren’t trying and the dog excepted it way fast than I did.

I have a 7 year old female chow mix, a 12 year old female beagle mix AND a 14 year old shepherd mix (all spayed) and am now 6 months pregnant. They are all (usually) well behaved, well trained dogs. Husband says the youngest has known, but now she won’t eat, she’s clingy sometimes, and stand offish at others. He’s always said that we’re symbiont beings (meaning that whatever I feel, the 7 year old pup feels) so after reading all of these testimonials I’m sure it’s because I’m pregnant. I’m assuming those of you with female dogs experiencing false pregnancies are unaltered (un spayed?). I guess my next question for the inter web is “how long can my dog go without eating?”

I was looking for information on what might possibly make my 8 month old male pit bull terrier keep trying to hump me. The more i read, the more im realizing hes doing. Any input would be great! It started with him constantly sniffing me, which turned into following me. I cant ever step back. because hes right behind me. If i dont let him come in the bathroom with me he sits at the door whining & scratching. He has never acted this way before. Today is something new, now he is trying to hump. He came to me like he wanted to cuddle, so I put him in my lap(he still thinks he’s small enough for that) & he started sniffing my chest. He immediately jumped down & started sniffing my legs & feet. Then he started humping the side of the chair I was sitting in & slobbering all over my arm. I tell him leave it & put his front paws back on the floor, but its not working. Every few minutes he gets up off the floor, comes back & does this over & over again. I know he is very tuned into scents. My bf has diabetes & the dog will bark at him constantly if his sugar is too high, but he never tries to hump anyone else. I thought he was just going crazy. We have been trying to have a baby together for yrs. Unless my dog just completely lost his mind, I don’t know what else it could

Thanks for all of this great information. My wife and I have a 7 year old pug and a 6 year old lab. My wife is currently 36 weeks pregnant. From the very beginning of the pregnancy the pug has been doing lots of the things I’ve read about such as pulling panties out of the hamper and paying her more attention than me which used to be unusual. We both immediately thought the pug knew she was pregnant based on her new behaviors. The reason I started looking for this information was because for the past couple weeks she has become incredibly “clingy” to both of us and acting sort of depressed as well. She has been eating less food, sleeping more, and just acting sad a little. We made a vet appt to make sure she is okay but I wanted to see if other people noticed changes in their pets as well before we talk to the vet. I’m sure she is fine and I think she knows shortly she won’t be the baby of the house anymore. She has been laying on my wife’s belly everyday and I think she knows the time is almost here.

I am 22 weeks pregnant, and for the past two weeks…our german shephard mix has been attacking our elderly pitbull mix. Nothing triggers it. He’ll be asleep and she’ll just go up to him and start growling and barking. She has broken skin on him multiple times now and its getting more and more severe each time. He wont fight back other than just pushing her off because he knows better. However, when she is not attacking him, they get along perfectly just like normal.
She has ONLY done this when I am around (except for one time) Often times when I am laying in bed and move just to readjust, she goes at him.
She is not currently spayed, but we are taking her on Friday..so hopefully this helps. Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi, my partner is a few weeks pregnant (we are not sure how long exactly but could be around 6 or 7 weeks, perhaps 9) and in the last week (it’s dec 27th now) the pointer dog we’ve had for 6.5 years has all of a sudden been panting like crazy at night, leaving rivers worth of saliva on the floor where she normally sleeps and most worrying of all has wrecked 2 internal doors and the architrave (door frame) around the door.
She seems to want to sleep in our room at night also in the last week and only now is on the bed sleeping up around my partner between or legs on top of the quilt. We’re convinced that it’s a possibility she senses it but the destructive behaviour has us baffled and also a little annoyed given the damage that she is doing. This damage has never happened in the 6.5 years we’ve had her. A vet checked her and gave a physical all clear last week. Am utterly puzzled.
When she comes down to the bed she is very content and I noticed this evening that the pointer dog was getting anxious (whining) when I was in the room that the dog sleeps in and my partner was down in the bedroom. I let the dog down to the bedroom and she is now sleeping between her legs like I mention above.

Im38 weeks pregnant. I brought my male pup home on valentines day. Which is also the day I conceived. For the first few days it was normal doggy stuff. Then I noticed he was always up my butt. He won’t sleep unless he is next to me. He follows me to the shower and bathroom. He is always by my side he is also very protective of me. He kisses my belly and loves to lay his head on it. As my due day comes closer I have noticed the dog loves to be in the nursery and he drops his toys over the side of the couch and into the pack and play. He also sniffs the baby’s toys swing ect. Sometimes it is cute others not so much! He definitely knows about the pregnancy!

My name is Clare, I’m a mother of two children and I have a question about my dogs behaviour.
I have a 20month old Siberian husky who has been acting quite strange lately. she has been carrying around stuffed toys treating them as her own eg. Licking them, sniffing them, leaving them in her bed with her as well as trying to give them food.
I have called a animal behaviorist and he said she is going through a ‘phantom pregnancy’
He also told me that because these dogs are usually in packs, when one falls pregnant in the pack the rest tend to start nursing such as an aunty etc,
My question is, could it be possible my dog is acting this way cause I could be pregnant??

We have a 2.5 year old female black lab. I am 27 weeks pregnant. In the last month she has started what seemed to be a very frustrating habit of taking the undies of mine and my girls’ outside and chewing them up. She has a doggy door, so this is something is was getting away with either at night or while we were are not home. It never dawned on me that this new “habit” could be related to my pregnancy. My husband suggested that maybe she is realizing my pregnancy and responding by finding female scented items and taking charge over them…cleaning them out of the house. Interesting! It does feel better knowing that this “habit” may not be a habit after all, but rather the dog’s natural instinct/reaction to pregnancy. At least I can hope that it will stop once I deliver 🙂

He has also grown quite MORE protective over myself and the house. Which doesn’t bother me because I feel safe ((:
I wonder when he lays with me can he hear the baby moving or feel of kicking or its heartbeat. I know they can smell the difference, but I wish I knew does he know whats in there.

Im 23 years old & I am 19 weeks and 5 days. I will be 20 weeks (( 5 months )) pregnant on this Monday (( Nov. 4th ))
I have had my pit bull / american bulldog Boss since he was born. (( I knew the mothers owner ))
He will be 5 years this Christmas.
He has always been such a sweet sweet boy. He’s my best friend, and my boyfriends as well. We have been together since before I got the dog.
Since we found out we ate expecting, Boss does nothing but love me even more. Which o never thought possible lol.
He cuddles me more and follows me around more than usual. Even if its just room to room. If o go to the bathroom he lays on the floor lmao I think its cute.
I’m starting to show more and I feel like the farther along I get the more he notices. He’s starting to rest his head on my belly a lot. I know he’s noticed how much I lay around now. At the beginning I was very I’ll, and he laid with me for days. He was and is Always there to comfort me, but he has always been a big baby.
At first o was worried he would feel left out or like there would be competition for my attention or love since he has always been MY baby. But I feel that my baby and.him will be best friends for the rest of his life. He is just so loving And caring towards me And my belly lol.

Omc! Thanks for the information! Now I know why my baby has been acting so weird! She has my symptoms of sleeping all day and not playing with my other dog. And she is only a year old! She follows me around everywhere more than usual. My boyfriend told me she was crying and howling for me when I got out the truck for a little bit. And its not because she is scared of my boyfriend. Because we got her together and she knows us both. She always cuddles by my belly.and doeant try to jump in my arms like she use to. Well that is my story for now. Hopefully she doesn’t have a false pregnancy. Cause I will freak out! Because she is my first baby 🙂 ♥ oh! I’m 11weeks.and also she has been behaving like a good dog. I think because she doesn’t want to put a lot of stress on me. Butt maybe I’m just crazy 🙂

I am 39 weeks pregnant and have a 8 year old siberian husky. She lives outside because she gets too hot inside. She has to be kept on a leash during the day because she will run away and is in a kennel at night. The last couple days she has been getting out of her kennel and when she got out before she runs off. Well these times she lays right in front of our front door and will walk right in the house when we open the door. She normally will run as soon as she sees someone because she does not want to be caught. I think she wants to be with me and watch over me because Im getting close to having my baby. It is weird but neat at the same time.

Hi everyone 🙂 im 34 weeks pregnant with a 16month old golden retriever. He is super soft dog and never been aggressive. He has been the calmest puppy and so well behaved. Never been to bothered by people or other dogs, plays nicely but never that excitable. In the last month he has started barking a lot more, when people knock on the door which is just normal for most dogs I think but now he is doing it to people when we are in the park, not everyone but the odd person he doesnt seem to trust. Do you think its just his age and he is changing behaviour or is he getting protective of me?

I’m 6 weeks and we have a 3 yr old jack Russell. He’s always followed me everywhere and lays on our bed during the day with me. His behaviour is the same, apart from when I’m being sick he growls at my partner and won’t let him near me. He’s a very hyper dog, and now seems to be a lot calmer, and he won’t jump at me so much…. But he still walks all over me to lay on my pillow.
We are now getting a jack Russell bitch, about 9/10 weeks old. He loves her, and I’m sure they’ll both do a great job keeping the baby safe and happy! I love my dog and I’m making sure he gets his attention and all the love he needs and wants!

I’m 21 weeks pregnant, my 2,5 year old frenchie seems to start having symptoms
of false pregnancy. I’m quite sure it must be because she senses my pregnancy. I’ve experienced changes
lately myself since my belly has finally started to grow getting me convinced there really is some dude growing inside of me. This must be noticable also in my behavior (and scent, who knows?) but for sure somehow my both frenchie girls sense it. The young one has also started to guard and show more aggressive behavior towards other (not familiar) dogs, she’s never ever done that! Her character is quite the opposite. Still she doesn’t do any harm, but by staring and attacking (without barking or physical contact) she makes sure well beforehand nobody comes even close. She also has to follow me all the time, everywhere, even to the toilet. And both girls have become even more affecionate than usual, they always come lay next to me, touching contact, one on each side. In general they behave extremely well and listen commands so all this behavior is quite adorable to me. Love them to bits, can’t wait to see how they’ll react to the baby. <3

I’m 6 months pregnant and we have 2 male labs, lately I ha ve noticed that our older lab is showing an excessive amount of dominance over the other dog. Although his dominance is not mean it’s more playful like he’s instigating playful fights and placing his head on the other ones back (like what they do before they hump) do you think this is a sign that the dogs sense the pregnancy?

My wife is six month pregnant. And although my dog was already a pain with his barking. I noticed now he has been over protective with my wife, especially at night when we are sleeping. Hi I am about 12 weeks pregnant over the last few months our 3 year old Wiemaraner has
Been aggressive with some other dogs. He never does it when I am not their and really is the softest family pet. It just occurred to me that maybe he is being protective. I do get nervous around other dogs maybe he can sense this? Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks Sue

With my first pregnancy my pit mix Simba slept with me every night and didn’t like anyone coming near me. My son is now 14 months and me and his father just got married almost a month ago and I’m pregnant again . Now Simba won’t even let my husband kiss me with him growling at him and Simba was my husbands long before i knew him

Well my fiancee’s yorkipoo who is 7 years old has been avoiding me since before I found out I was pregnant I am currently 7 weeks along and he refuses to let me take him outside. When I do get him out he refuses to pee and or poop for 30 minutes to an hour and then when we get inside he then goes to the bath room, but it is only me he does that too. My fiancée can take him out with out any problems and the dog never goes inside when he is home. Is it me or does the dog hate me now since he never did this until I became pregnant. And is this normal for some dogs to rebel against the pregnancy? -Hayley

When I first became pregnant, before i had any idea my dog started to chew things while we were at work. Came home from work one day and she had destroyed some of our condoms so my husband hid the rest behind things on a shelf above the bed. Came home for lunch the next day….she found them and chewed them….The next day I couldn’t go home for.lunch but my husband did and sent me a picture….the dog had gotten into my tampons and opened them all and chewed them….I truly believe she knew we were not going to need them for a while!

When I first read these stories of human interactions with their pregnant “pet Moms”, our doggies have their amazing ways. Since the post was made about 2 years ago, I assume that you are now are proud parents and that you still have your doggie (you never mentioned the breed)…but the way your dog “figured” out about the uses of condoms and tampons, is wisdom beyond ALL of us…I believe that God (who made us all) has instilled certain instincts in the animals that we humans have included within our families! How delightfully funny this was…I needed this laugh today!! Stay Blessed.

I think some dogs can tell/sense pregnancy. I’m now seven months pregnant & my mother has a tot hihuaha and hes never ‘hated’ me but is severely attatched to my mother and NEVER often does he interact with anyone besides her. BeforeI even was aware that I was pregnant he was actig weird and a lot more affectionate toward me. I tjought it was odd but didn’t think much of it. He still continues to lay right next to my stomache where his side is against it. The baby kicks everytime chewy lays on it , its strange but adorable.

Hi, I’m 29 weeks pregnant and have a 2yr old patterdale terrier male, he’s a hunting dog and more of a mans dog and wouldn’t bother with me. In my early stages if pregnancy he would do his business and really miss behave for me but in the last 2weeks he has followed me everywhere and hardly bothers with my partner (his master) he even creeps up n rests his head on my bump when I’m napping 🙂 it’s like he’s a completely different dog!!! And to top it off my baby girl moves more while he’s cuddling in, hopefully it’s the sign of a great bond forming 🙂

My wife is in her 34th week and for the past 2-3 weeks our 6 year old golden doodle has been following me everywhere, not my wife. He’s been hyper vigilent to make sure he knows where I am at all times. Even while he’s driinking he’s looking for me out of the corner of his eye. Very bizarre and somewhat annoying honestly. He’s very sweet so I don’t expect any issues.

I had a different response from my lab mix with my first and second pregnancies. My first pregnancy, the dog stayed away from me and stared at me. I did not know I was pregnant when her behavior towards me changed. She was suspect of me and when I took her out in the yard to play she would walk over to the far end of the yard (.5 acre) and just stare at me. I mean not move an inch, just stare. I’d throw the ball, and nothing. A few days later I found out I was pregnant. In my third and seventh month of pregnancy, the dog jumped up and hit me in my belly. I kept the dog, thinking it was not intentional. By My second pregnancy, the same dog started running out of the house early morning and walking around the neighborhood on her own. I used to have to drive around looking for her. The last straw was her circling around my then one year old daughter when she was sleeping in her playpen, in a threatening manner. I just gave in to my fears that the dog was too confrontational and insecure within our growing family, and we gave her up to a single male family member of ours whom resides on a farm. She now has no kids to compete with and seems happier.

I am 19 weeks pregnant and we have just had our young golden retriever to the vet today, after displaying nesting behaviour and many of indicators of a bitch who is about to whelp (including a drop in temperature). It seems that she is having a false pregnancy! Given our girl is just 12 months old and this was her first ever season (thus no experience with pups), I can’t help but wonder if she has responded to my pregnancy. Very strange!

Yes, when my fiance and I got our puppy she was just 8 weeks old. This was in October of last year, we got pregnant in November and found out in December. By this time, Paris, our puppy’s name, was 3 months approaching four months, and she just would howl if I left her, and followed me around the house. Now she’s 8 months, and is a medium sized dog, and wherever I go, whether it’s to the bathroom, to change clothes, to take a shower, to cook in the kitchen I look either to my left or right, and she’s there. Just staring at me. I have never experienced anything like this, as this is our first child. And at first, like many of you, it was getting on my nerves, but as time went on I love the attention, and puppy kisses I get all day everyday. And yes, she wants to lay underneath me at all times, on top of my belly, and kisses it whenever she gets a chance. Im going to try that article of clothing leaving it by the baby, and bringing it home for her to sniff and get used to.. hope it works.

HELLO I HAVE A 3 YR. OLD LABRADOR & HE IS ALWAYS BEEN REALLY CLOSE TO ME.. HE IS VERY WELL TRAINED & STAYS INSIDE & SLEEPS N OUR ROOM. HE IS GOOD WITH MY 2 CHILDREN.. (4 YR OLD & 7 YR OLD) I FOUND OUT I WAS PREGNANT A WEEK AGO, IM ONLY 6 WEEKS & FOR THE PAST FEW WEEKS MY DOG ” CHEVY” HAS BEEN DRIVING ME CRAZY… HE FOLLOWS ME ALL OVER THE PLACE.. HE WOULD ALREADY DO THAT. BUT NOW HE IS REALLY HYPER TO BE AROUND ME & HE IS CONSTANTLY SNIFFING ME ALL OVER EVERY CHANCE HE GETS.. HE WANTS TO SIT ON MY LAP ALL THE TIME… I HAVE EVEN NOTICED AT NIGHT AS WE ARE GOING TO BED HE PLOTS HIMSELF RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE DOOR, BLOCKING THE DOORWAY.. IF HE IS NOT THERE HE LAYS AT MY SIDE OF THE BED… I WAS JUST WONDERING IF THEY SOMEHOW KNEW OR COULD FEEL THAT I WAS PREGNANT, SO I LOOKED IT UP AND IT BROUGHT ME HERE… SO HERE IS MY STORY.. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE INFO!!!!

We have 2 male dogs; an american staffordshire terrier & a beagle/greyhound mix. Both have been great throughout the pregnancy. They have calmed down quite a bit, have stopped jumping up on me when excited almost immediately after we found our we were expecting. They are always snuggling with me, especially rating their heads on my bump. Our beagle/greyhound likes to follow me everywhere and keep an eye on me, and they both move their heads and fall asleep when the baby is kicking.

I believe that dogs sense more things then we do… dogs can sense if a person has cancer.. so why wouldn’t they be able to sense a pregnancy… my Italian Greyhound and was 6 months at the time…he is a male neutered… i got him in July 2012 his birthday is March 10.. i became pregnant in Aug.. now I’m 8 months n he follows me around… n sleeps with me… usually he is all over my boyfriend but he seem to keep his little eyes on me… he has calmed down a lot since we moved n probably because i am getting closer to my due date which is May 1 … i have also realized that his eating habits have changed a little… n he is being such a good boy… he is now 1.. i don’t mind that he follows me and wants to keep n eye on me… i think it’s sweet.. :0)

ME too I still don’t know if I’m pregnant but My friends dog hated me.Like a few weeks ago I moved in with her her Chiwawa would runs off when i call him or would bark at me,Her other dog on the other hand is so calm and normal. I left for a few days to visit my boyfriend, when i came back her hateful dog jump on me and would follow me everywhere to the bathroom my room where he never goes and he even fell asleep with me he is always sniffing me and licking me, Her calmer dog is always look confused the day i came back and sniffed me the next day he’s all in my face, he sniffs me and is over protects me from the littlest things like Mosquitoes (he stood over me snapping at them so they wouldn’t bit me). They both lay on my lap and hate when i’m far from them. They never acted like this before My friend gets and her husband gets so jealous of it they think i give them treats but i don’t. I hope it’s not just me but Does this happen for to other women who felt they were pregnant
ps.
I only have some symptoms like:
weird discharge,
light cramping in my pelvic area,
Always sleepy (I’m not a sleepy person),
and lower back aches.

Boliana are you a dog? go to your doctor to ask silly questions about your fertility, people here are not doctors and we are discussing dog behaviors when owners become pregnant.

Our female dog had all the symptoms of pregnancy when I was pregnant. We took her to the vet and she had a false pregnancy…. So weird! The vet was so shocked.

Yeah…its the weirdest thing. My female dog has started lactating now that I’m 15 weeks pregnant. I have been searching the internet to see if any others have had this experience but haven’t found a thing. Its just hard for me to believe its purely a coincidence that she’s having a false pregnancy when I’m pregnant and she’s never done this before despite having doggie periods many times before. She hasn’t had contact w a male dog so I’m wondering if she’s picking up my hormones or having a sympathy pregnancy…? So weird…

I’m five weeks pregnant (counting from my last period) and my 3 year old female mastiff is going through her first false pregnancy (lactating and humping, although I’m not sure the latter is part of it) and has been going through it since a few days ago right before I found out I was pregnant! I was just googling this “coincidence” when I found your post and I’m so happy to hear someone else is going through the same ordeal!

I am 19 weeks pregnant and my beagle has a false pregnancy as well. I was just wondering the same, if its a coincidence or if she feels sympathy for my own pregnancy. So weird!

Trish, omg that’s just crazy!! My 5 year old female boston terrier just started lactating today! I’m 30 weeks pregnant! She hasn’t had contact with a male dog either! She has urinated once in the babies new nursery, and she’s never gone in the house ever! I’ve been looking online all day and this is the first thing I’ve found about this! Thanks for your post. I do believe its sympathy pregnancy.

You ask if anyone experienced unusual dog behavior due to pregnancy. I have to say 110% “YES!”. During what must have been my 3rd of 4th week of my first pregnancy, I still was unaware that I was pregnant. Our Aussie Shepherd began sniffing me incessantly! She was driving me so crazy for days that I was getting annoyed at her. Even my husband noticed her odd behavior.
We found out a few days later that I was pregnant! To this day, my husband and I are convinced our dog ‘knew’ I was pregnant before we did.
