Sharwood the dog makes his 40th and final blood donation like a champ. And if that isn’t amazing enough, you should know that he did it while sleeping through the entire session!
The pooch made his final blood donation at Northampton Vets4Pets on Saturday 13 July.
And on July 15, the Pet Blood Bank UK celebrated Sharwood becoming the first ever dog in the UK to reach 40 blood donations – a milestone for both Pet Blood Bank UK and the pooch.
“Sharwood’s 40th milestone also saw him retire as a donor as he will soon turn 8, the maximum age limit for dog blood donors,” Pet Blood Bank UK wrote.
Sharwood is a Gordon Setter who has been loyally donating blood since 2017, with the help and support of his owner, Sue Mitchell.
With his final blood donation, the charity revealed that Sharwood has donated a total of 22.5kg of blood. And thanks to his donation, he has helped saved the lives of a total of 380 dogs.
And one of the dogs that Sharwood help save is Sizzle the Dachshund who suffers from haemophilia.
Sizzle’s owner, Emma Gray, congratulated Sharwood and Mitchell on the achievement and said, “It truly humbles me that owners and their wonderful dogs give up their time to attend donation sessions. Without Sharwood and his lovely owner Sue, our dog Sizzle would simply not be here today.“
“We are one very proud charity right now,” Pet Blood Bank UK wrote.
Of course, Mitchell is also one very proud dog owner. She tells Pet Blood Bank UK, “As the owner of Sharwood, I am immensely proud of him reaching this incredible achievement. His first donation was in 2017 and he has successfully donated on every visit since then!”
Mitchell reveals that Sharwood’s son, Brinjal, who has already donated 12 units of blood, will continue his legacy.
“Sharwood is the third of my dogs who has regularly donated to this wonderful charity. I am so proud of them for all the lives they have helped to save,” Mitchell added.
According to Pet Blood Bank UK, Mitchell’s dogs have donated a combined total of over 97 units of blood since the family’s first donor, Garner, joined the pack in 2015.
“Canine blood donors and their owners are the hidden helpers of the veterinary world,” Pet Blood Bank’s Marketing Manager Nicole Osborne said. “Their donations help to ensure that lifesaving blood is always available for any vet that needs it, and Sharwood has gone above and beyond in his contributions to this cause.“
Now, after helping save the lives of hundreds of dogs, Sharwood is off to enjoy his well deserved retirement.
