Last week, an unexpected encounter in the Tower Door corridor of Balmoral castle between Queen Elizabeth II’s six Corgis and Corgi-mixes and Princess Beatrice’s three Norfolk Terriers resulted in the princess’s 11-year-old Norfolk terrier Max getting severely injured and almost losing an ear.
The scuffle occurred when the Queen’s “dog boy” was taking her pack for a walk around the castle grounds.
Three of the Queen’s Pembroke Welsh Corgis, named Monty, Willow and Holly, are all descended from a dog she was given for her 18th birthday named Susan. The three remaining dogs are Corgi-Dachshund mixes, called Dorgis, named Cider, Candy and Vulcan.
Heading down the corridor to be walked, the Queen’s dogs became overly excited and starting fighting amongst themselves. At that moment, Princess Beatrice’s pack of Norfolk Terriers joined them in the hall, causing the boy to lose control of the dogs.
An insider told the UK Telegraph, “The next thing we knew there were horrific yelps and screams and it seems the corgis picked on Max. He was very badly injured and had to be taken to the local vet. There was blood everywhere.”
The princess received Max as a Christmas gift when she was 13 years old. Now 24, Princess Beatrice is said to be very upset by the ordeal, especially since another of her terriers, Millie, died only a week earlier from natural causes.
Max was treated by a veterinarian and is now being cared for by the princess in the family’s Scottish castle.
