Bichon Frise

Description

The Bichon Frise is a trendy breed of small, sturdy dog that originated in Spain and France. It belongs to the Non-sporting breed family which is a diverse group of dogs distinguished for their distinct built, personality and appearance. The Bichon Frise has been bred for the purpose of companionship. Their soft, curly double coat usually comes in various colors such as cream, solid white, apricot, and gray.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the Bichon Frise breed share a common height of about 9.5 to 11.5 in as measured at the withers. Their weight is approximately 7 to 12 lbs.

Temperament

The charming Bichon dog, in general, loves to be with people. They are sociable, delightful and affectionate. No wonder they get along well with children and other pets. They tend to be self-assured,  independent, bold and lively. They are intelligent and easy to train. This breed is usually competitive and obedient. They make good watchdogs, though may be quite difficult to housebreak. Members of the Bichon Frise breed generally need a pack leader who is firm but calm, and consistent with rules. If not trained properly, the breed can develop behavior problems such as obsessive barking and separation anxiety.

Grooming

This fluffy, tiny dog needs monthly bathing and frequent grooming. The breed is recommended they be groomed professionally every four weeks. In addition, trimming their hair around the ears and eyes is advisable. Bichons pets tend to shed very lightly; making them good for allergic owners.

Health Concerns

Members of the Bichon Frise are prone to skin allergies and infections. They are also likely to suffer from epilepsy, bladders stones, cataracts, and bleeding disorders. With proper nutrition and exercise, the breed can live for as long as 12 to 14 years.

Best Environment
Bichon dogs rarely thrive in humid areas. They have a considerably low tolerance to heat; making proper air conditioning necessary when keeping them indoors. The breed may be good for apartment-living provided that they get to receive ample exercise. They are relatively active indoors so they can do fine in dwellings with no yard space. Members of the Bichon Frise breed enjoy being active little dogs. They need to play and be taken for daily walks. In addition, a good romp in a secure open place can be great.
