Witnesses along a busy New York road watched in horror as the passenger side door of a Jeep Cherokee opened and a dog was tossed out. Then, as the Jeep began to drive off, the tan-and-white mixed breed pup ran to the driver’s side door in an attempt to get back in, but was shoved away.
As the vehicle drove off, the dog chased after his family, desperate to get back inside when he was struck by an oncoming car.
The dog was immediately taken to a veterinarian and, thankfully, suffered only bruises. He is now being cared for by the Suffolk County SPCA in Moriches, New York.
Now, the Suffolk County SPCA and police are asking for the public’s help in identifying either the driver of the dark green Jeep Grand Cherokee or the owner of the abandoned dog.
The Suffolk County SPCA posted a plea for help to Facebook:
“On Monday January 18, 2016 around 4pm on Jerusalem Hollow Road in Moriches, the dog in this photo was seen being let out of a dark green Jeep Cherokee; an early 2000s model. We’re looking for anyone who recognizes the dog, the car or might have witnessed the incident.”
A $2,000 reward is being offered for anyone with information about the incident, which happened around 4 p.m. on Monday, January 18.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722. All calls will be kept confidential.
