It must have been fate! An Amazon delivery driver took a wrong turn on his daily route, which ultimately led him to a dog in serious distress.

John Cassabria was delivering Amazon packages in his hometown of Woburn, Massachusetts when he turned down the wrong street. When he stopped his van to have a closer look at the navigation system, the noise coming from a nearby house caught his attention.

“I’ve never heard anything like that in my life,” he told CNN. “I actually heard it over the reversing beep of my van.”

Unable to ignore the sounds of distress coming from inside a fenced-in backyard, the 24-year old delivery driver exited his van and walked over to take a look. When he peeked over the fence, he immediately sprung into action.

Fourteen-year old Husky, Luka, was in his family’s backyard swimming pool, his head barely reaching above the water. Cassabria scaled the fence and leapt into the water to save him. “I jumped into the pool with everything on. Phone, wallet, watch. None of it mattered. I thought only of the dog at that moment,” he recalled. After pulling Luka to safety, Cassabria called the Woburn Police Department.

Luka’s family had just left town for a weekend vacation and their pet sitter had not yet arrived for a scheduled visit. Apparently Luka had ventured out through the doggy door— one he’s used for the past 14 years without incident—and stumbled into the pool.

Without Cassabria’s quick action, Luka would not have survived much longer, his owner Julie Caldwell said. At 14-years old, the senior dog’s back legs are failing and he’s not a swimmer.

“I happened to be in the right moment at the right time. I would repeat the same actions over and over if I had to,” Cassabria said.

Cassabria sat with Luka for an hour and a half until his pet sitter arrived—then returned to his delivery route.
