Description

The American English Coonhound, also called as Redtick Coonhound or simply English Coonhound, is a breed of medium-sized dog that originated in the United States of America. It belongs to the hound breed family which is notable for their excellent hunting skills emphasized by their exceptional scenting power, speed, and or stamina. Their short, hard coat usually comes in blue color with white ticks, red with white patches, or white and black markings.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the Amercican English Coonhound normally stand a height of 21 to 27 in at the withers, and weigh about 40 to 65 lbs.

Temperament

American English Coonhounds, in general, are energetic, active, and intelligent dogs. They are loving and tend to be eager in pleasing their master. Their outstanding sensing power makes them great hunters. The breed is basically an extremely fast and a hot-trailing type of coonhound. English Coonhounds are highly devoted to their family owners; making them an excellent family dog. They do well indoors, and have the capacity to play a fair guardian to the home and its dwellers. More often than not, the breed is best around older children. To keep these highly spirited dogs from developing behavior problems, proper human leadership has to be practiced. Their owners have to be firm yet calm, at the same time confident and consistent in their approach. Early socialization is also necessary to prevent English Coonhounds from becoming aloof with strangers. Keeping them off-leash is not a good idea as they are likely to take off after any interesting scent. Additionally, adequate mental and physical stimulation is important to keep them from becoming high-strung.

Grooming

American English Coonhounds are easy to groom. Their short, hard coat only needs to be brushed on an occasional basis. Bathe sessions may also be done only when very necessary. The breed tends to shed moderately.

Health Concerns

American English Coonhounds are susceptible to overheating while in the hunt during the summer months in the southern parts of the United States. The breed has an average lifespan of 11 to 12 years.

Best Environment

Members of the American English Coonhound are hardly ever recommended for apartment-living. They tend to be highly active indoors, and would do best with access to an acreage. Providing them with extensive running activities are necessary to keep them happy. Taking them out on long brisk walks or jogs everyday are advisable.
