Description
The Bearded Collie, also called Beardie, is a well-liked breed of medium-sized, strong dog that originated in Scotland. It belongs to the Herding breed family which is remarkable for their outstanding ability to control the movement of other animals. Beardies have been bred to become herding and drover dogs. Their shaggy double coat is waterproof and hangs all over their entire body. The breed is born either with black, blue, brown or fawn colors, with or without white markings. Their hair color usually lightens with maturity.
Height and Weight
Both the male and female members of the Bearded Collie commonly stand a height of 20 to 22 in at the withers, and weigh 40 to 60 lbs.
Temperament
Bearded Collies, in general, are cheerful and happy-go-lucky. They are affectionate, lively, and playful; making them excellent companions for children. They typically love to be with their family owners. Lack of exercise, however, can make them rather destructive. Because the breed is exuberant and highly energetic, adequate mental and physical activities have to be provided every day. Although Bearded Collies tend to bark loudly, they are no watchdogs. The breed is neither aggressive nor timid. In addition, Beardies require a handler that can display a natural air of authority; someone who can be firm yet gentle, at the same time consistent in disciplining them. To make them stable and confident, owners have to be able to display a well-balanced leadership onto them.
Grooming
Beardies generally require more than average coat care. It’s best that they get to receive slight grooming every day, and an extensive grooming on a weekly basis. Because of their long coat, the breed is prone to matting. Owners have to check for mats every day. Brushing may also be done instead of combing since the latter can tear their hair.
Health Concerns
Bearded Collies are commonly prone to suffer from hip dysplasia, cerebral vascular problem, cancer, Addison’s Disease, and chronic kidney failure. With proper care, nutrition, and exercise, the breed can live for as long as 14 to 15 years.
Best Environment
Bearded Collies crave for human companionship. They prefer to be with their masters, and they like to know what they are up to. In fact, the breed enjoys following their family owners. Beardies love to be outdoors. Because of their excessive energy reserves, they basically require a lot of daily exercise. Access to a large yard is ideal for the Bearded Collies. Nevertheless, the breed is not recommended to live in an apartment. Besides, they are quite inactive indoors. Taking them out for long walks or letting them run freely is particularly great for this pet.
