Description
The Border Terrier is an admired breed of small, sturdy dog that originated in Scotland and England. It belongs to the Terrier breed family which is recognized for their distinct personality and excellent hunting skills. Border Terriers have been bred to become fox-hunting dogs. Their short double coat is dense and wiry. It usually comes in numerous colors such as grizzle and tan, red, wheaten, or blue and tan. Some may have a bit of white markings on the chest.
Height and Weight
The male members of the Border Terrier breed normally stand a height of 13 to 16 in at the withers, and weigh 13 to 16 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, are quite smaller with a typical height of 11 to 14 in, and a weight of about 11 to 14 lbs.
Temperament
Border Terriers, in general, are alert, agile, and daring little hunters. They are mild-mannered, lively, and love to play with children. The breed is affectionate and very willing to please their family owners; thereby, making them rather easy to train. Border Terriers usually make excellent watchdogs. They tend to bark, but are definitely not aggressive. Owners just have to ensure that the dogs are socialized well. To keep the breed from becoming too timid, they have to be made accustomed to noises during their puppyhood. Additionally, Border Terriers have strong hunting instincts which make them quite unreliable with smaller non-canine pets. Because of their propensity to develop Small Dog Syndrome, handlers have to be firm but calm, at the same time confident and consistent in disciplining the pet.
Grooming
Border Terriers generally have moderate coat care requirements. Although they do not necessarily have to be bathed every day, brushing has to be done on a weekly basis. Quarterly stripping is also important. Shaping may be accomplished by leaving their scraggly hair as well as back-fur not clipped.
Health Concerns
Members of the Border Terrier breed are prone to suffer from Spike’s Disease which is scientifically recognized as CECS or Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome. Such disorder is a metabolic, muscular, or neurological health complication. Other conditions associated with the breed are hip and cardiac problems. With proper attention, diet, and exercise, the breed can live for as long as 12 to 15 years.
Best Environment
These cunning escape pooches are recommended to have easy access to a securely fenced yard. Because the breed loves to chew, owners are also encouraged to provide the pets with sturdy chewable toys. Border Terriers are generally not suited for living environments with rowdy children. When it comes to exercise, the breed has to be given daily physical activities. Letting them play or allowing them to roam freely in a fenced space would be great for them.
