The role of Old Yeller in the 1957 Disney movie of the same name was played by Spike, a Mastador (Mastiff/Labrador mix) rescued from a Van Nuys, California shelter as a puppy by famed dog trainer Frank Weatherwax.

Old Yeller’s death in the movie remains one of the most heartbreaking scenes in cinematic history with Old Yeller hailed as a cultural icon. One critic cited it as “among the best, if not THE best” of the boy-and-his-dog films ever made.

Fun Fact: In the book on which the movie was based, the character of Old Yeller was portrayed as a Black-mouthed Cur, not a yellow Lab.

    My favorite famous doggy was Toto. My 9 year old Yorkie Pomeranian named Puppy looks just like Toto.
