Dedicated to the four-legged members of our military, the War Dog Memorial was unveiled on Saturday at The Orion Veterans Memorial in Lake Orion, Michigan.

A tribute to the significant roles of dogs during wartime, from sentry duty to detection and everything in between, the Lake Orion War Dog Memorial features two military war dogs atop sandbags next to the American flag. A plaque begins with the words “defender,” “protector” and “friend.”

From World War II to Vietnam, to the current War on Terrorism, organizers at the Orion Veterans Memorial say war dogs continue to play an important role that saves lives.

They also hope that their special dedication to our four-legged members of the military will inspire other memorial sites around the country to pay tribute to war dogs, too.

“It’s a good tribute to them because they’re canine warriors; they fought alongside men and women in uniform for years and they need to be recognized and respected for what they did,” Phil Weitlauf with Michigan War Dog Memorial, Inc. told WJBK.
